The poem I chose to analyze the figurative language is called “Dreams” written by Langston Hughes. I chose this poem because it is an inspirational and real life theme about why you should follow and cherish dreams before it’s too late. The author uses both metaphors and personification to convey the theme of this poem. In the first stanza, the author uses the metaphor, "For if dreams die, Life is a broken-winged bird that cannot fly," which means life's a journey. The bird is symobilizing hope, freedom and joy. The interpretation I received from the author was if one gives up on their dreams they would no longer be happy, fulfilled or feel accomplished. In the second stanza, the author states, "Life is a barren field frozen with snow, "Which

According to Literature: An Introduction to Reading and Writing, figurative language “enables writers to amplify their ideas while still employing relatively small numbers of words” (Roberts and Zweig, 639). The epigraphy by Langston Hughes describes how dreams change after they had been put off. When dreams fail, it affects each person differently. The person may just give up on the dream completely, find a new way to reach the dream, change the situation so it may not be the dream but something similar, or it can destroy other dreams too. They all eagerly wait for the insurance money, produced after Walter’s dad passed away, to make their dreams come true. But when the check arrived, Walter gave most of the money to Willy Harris, a business partner, runs off with the money when it was suppose to be invested

He stood out amongst the most energetic essayists and scholars of the Harlem Renaissance, which was the African American artistic growth in the 1920s that praised dark life and culture. “Hughes' innovative expertise was impacted by his life in New York City's Harlem, an essentially African American neighborhood (Rampersad 3).”

Second, Langston Hughes advises the reader to hold onto dreams, "Dreams" is an extremely short poem written in free verse. It is two stanzas long, and the content dictates the form. Hughes instructs his readers to hold on tightly to their dreams because without them, life is a "broken-winged bird that cannot fly." The broken down bird is a physical symbol of the discrimination and struggles that African Americans faced during Hughes 's time. Dreams, however, have no physical limitations. A person dreams are important for maintaining faith as they provide comfort, solace, and hope in a brutal world. The repetitive vocabulary and repeated themes almost remind the reader of nursery rhymes or early spirituals rather than the aim to break the classical and traditional forms. In "Dreams," though, Hughes implies that even if one 's dreams do not come true, a life without hope is truly sad.

It was a time when African Americans did not have all the same opportunities. This essay is going to be talking about a poem called Dream Deferred. I selected this poem, since I liked the wording of it and what Hughes was writing it about. The title to me tells me that a dream can always disappear and that some dreams can fall. My first impression of this poem was wow! The reason I liked the poem was because the wording he used. This poem before I researched about, I thought it meant that someone has a dream and that their dream has been vanished. This poem's tone is negative, because in one part he's talking about African Americans and how they don't have freedom. The poem has to do with African families and how their having to face prejudice and economic hardship (GradeSaver 2). People make decision everyday and they get ruined or don’t happen. In “Dreams” by Langston Hughes he shows that everyone has dreams and dreams die.
In the first poem called Dreams, Langston Hughes wrote this around the Harlem Renaissance era to uplift many black people. In the Poem he states “For if dreams die, Life is a broken-winged bird, that cannot fly”. This is means that dreams and goals gives one’s life the ability to soar to new places and if one does not dream it will be like a bird with a broken wing that will stay on the ground.
