The American dream is an example of a national spirit that represents different ideologies. The set of ideas may be of democracy, equality matters, liberty, rights, and opportunities. The American dream believes in freedom for prosperity and success for its citizens. The idea suggests that upward social mobility for individuals can be achieved only through hard work. Dreams, the aspiration and goal of everyone. That is why everyone is wasting their lives. Throughout this unit, we have looked at examples from both sides of this argument and in the end, it was obvious, it is not worth it to dream. While you can achieve your dream despite immense odds, it's not worth it to dream because if you blindly follow a dream you can't accomplish you can waste your life. Circumstances beyond your control can derail your dream and even if you work hard it doesn't always pay off consequently.

Hopes and dreams can be very important for peoples’ needs and survival. In Steinbeck’s story, Of Mice and Men, each of the main characters is driven by their hopes and dreams; it provides a sense of motivation and animation to each of their being. From Lennie and George being driven by their hopes and dreams of owning a farm, to Curley’s wife’s dreams of becoming an actress, having dreams plays an essential role in giving hope to the characters of Steinbeck’s story. Everyone chases a dream at some point in life. “The Dreamer” by Junot Diaz is a heartfelt story about one exceptional woman chasing her dreams. Diaz uses his mother’s life as an example of how a person can achieve his or her dreams by having courage and self-determination. He chooses to write about her because she is his motivation to succeed. He uses her struggles to provide evidence to support his thesis that anyone can overcome challenges and achieve success. While “The Dreamer” appears geared toward an audience consisting of individuals facing adversity, the piece was first published in a women’s magazine called More in 2011 (Diaz 128).

There are many different dreams to be had: daydreams, dreams of the future, dreams of, well, practically anything imaginable. Perhaps one of the most infamous types of dreams that has been heard of is the American Dream. Defined as “the ideal that every American should have equal opportunity to achieve success and prosperity through hard work, determination, and initiative”, the American Dream is one of equality and desire and those who strive to achieve it are ambition-filled, driven individuals. It is hard to define what exactly is required to have achieved the American Dream because, in truth, everyone has a different idea of success and prosperity. Success means something different to every ear that hears the word. This exact truth about the American Dream is prominently seen in the novel In Cold Blood by Truman Capote; a book composed of the many characters, all who possess very different ideas of what the American Dream is.

The American dream will always be out of reach for common people. The majority of people I interviewed said something along the lines of, “the American dream is to be given a chance to do something or be something you want to be.” This opinion seems to be too optimistic. Many of the earlier studies were based on culture’s and the interpretation of dreams, but also used as a form of prophecy, inspiration, and guidance. Many people still believe this such, people today beliefs and theories have opened up to a more vast interpretation, they are made up of; dreams are rare brain activity, dreams allow people to reflect on themselves, or that dreams are too massive to be correctly interpret. Even when our dreams are far from fruition, we as humans still believe in them as it is in our nature. S.E. Then (in America) they get a stable job with good income, buy a house, have a family, and live happily ever after. The frequency and large application for the term “The American Dream” is what initially drew a large amount of immigrants in the late 1800’s/early 1900’s because it was viewed as the land of freedom and most importantly, opportunity. “The American Dream” can be, and is a widely used phrase but in this essay shall be used to refer to many characters’ own hopes and dreams for their future.
