Club Drugs Lesson
Club Drugs are drugs that are normally abused by teens and young adults at bars, nightclubs and concerts and parties.
Examples of club drugs:
GHB (Xyrem)- affects the Central Nervous System. It is a depressant that was approved in the United States for medical use with sleeping disorders.
Rohypnol- Began in the 1990’s and can’t be imported into the United States. It passed no medical tests in the US and is illegal.
LSD- a drug that can create vivid hallucinogens. These hallucinations can last anywhere from 8-12 hours. Life threatening side effects can be expected if drug is used with other substances such as alcohol and other drugs. This drug puts deadly chemicals in your system.
Methylenedioxypyrovalerone (MDPV)- Also known as “like magic”, “vanilla sky” and “meow meow”. This drug is very closely related to cocaine. People who are looking for increased energy are most likely to take it. This drug is among one of the most addicting.
Methamphetamine(meth-am-fet-A-me) also known as crystal meth. Can be taken through the nose, injected or orally. Rushes of confidence and energy are expected for 6-24 hours.
Mephedrone is a drug that can give you alertness and a sense of confidence. This drug is similar to ecstasy or cocaine.
Ecstasy is also known as “The Love Drug”. This drug can knock you unconscious and make you forget any events that may have happened. Ecstasy can cause poor memory.
Effects of club drugs:
GHB results in deep unhealthy sleep,
Meth is not only highly addictive it is easily "cooked" in homes across the country. Unlike some drugs, which are derived from natural sources, meth includes an array of dangerous chemicals. These chemicals can include battery acid, rat poison and motor oil.
By 1919, Japan started producing methamphetamine which was cheaper and more potent than amphetamine. It was produced in a crystalline powder form and was able it to be dissolved in water, making it easier for it to be injected. This form of amphetamine is still legally produced in the US and is being sold under the name of Desoxyn. (Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, 2010, para. 1-3)
Jyllian Kemsley Ph.D. is a chemical research scientist, and scientific research contributor to the CENtral Science’s Safety Zone blog that seeks to “cover science and technology, business and industry, government and policy, education, and employment aspects of the chemistry field”. Her article entitled “Psychedelic Compounds like Ecstasy May Be Good for More than Just a High", reports on the revolutionary research theory within the field of medicine that seeks to examine the prospective benefits of using psychoactive compounds in treating a number of mental conditions. The piece is well written, and presents a number of background studies that have evaluated the efficiency of these
Even though Desoxyn (pharmaceutical grade of methamphetamine) is a medication advised for weight reduction, ADHD, narcolepsy and depression. Methamphetamine is a life-threatening dangerous drug. because it 's highly addictive stimulant that burns up the body’s resources, creating a devastating dependence that can only be relieved by taking more of the drug. In addition when repeatedly taken over time, methamphetamine can damage nerve cells located in the brain’s pleasure center, causing irreversible harm to the brain. Making meth is also, an extreme hazard because meth labs produce severely toxic fumes. So toxic that homes/locations priorly containing meth labs can not be resold for an extensive period of time. The epidemic of methamphetamine abuse, causes devastating damage to teeth and oral tissues. Considering I want to be a dental hygienist, it important that I know what to look for, how to treat, and how it affects my patients.
Methamphetamine is classified as a schedule II stimulant5 (meaning it has high potential for abuse), which makes it legally available through a nonrefillable prescription, although it is rarely used medicinally, and only at doses
Meth is an amphetamine and a central nervous system stimulant meaning it is an upper (Inaba & Cohen, 2014). It increases respiration, heart rate, motor activity, and alertness (Fisher & Harrison, 2013). This type of drug leads to euphoria feelings by stimulating the reward center
MDMA, or methylenedioxy-methylamphetamine, is a chemical that affects the release of serotonin in the brain and is a schedule I drug in the United states. Most commonly known as a part of the ecstasy pill or molly powder capsule, this crystalline drug is used at raves, parties, and clubs worldwide for a heightened sense of euphoria and a myriad of psychedelic effects. This substance is known as the love drug for it's ability to bring people closer together and lower normal social anxieties with its empatheogenic effects. In the last few years, more and more studies have been done on the valid psychiatric use for counseling and couples therapy. Here are some of the things found during the most recent of these studies.
Ecstasy also known as MDMA and is an edible, candy-like, stimulant drug, that gives the user relaxed, energetic, happy, and sensual feelings. Its effects can last for over 24 hours allowing the user to party for long periods of time. Ecstasy can cause hallucinations, panic and anxiety attacks, nausea, vomiting, inability to sleep, overheating, seizures, irregular heartbeats and strokes. The drug can cause emotional disturbances such as depression.
Meaning out of all the drugs that are out there, Molly has a high potential for abuse. Molly is also classified as a mild hallucinogen and a psychedelic. Meaning that when someone is high on molly, they would hallucinate and start to see or hear things that are not really there. When Molly is taken, it acts as a central nervous system stimulant. The MDA absorbed through the body destroys serotonin-producing neurons in your body. These neurons role in your body is to regulate aggression, mood, sexual activity, sleep, and sensitivity to pain. This is why when people are high off of Molly, they have trippy dreams and feel unstoppable. Molly can be snorted, injected, but is mostly found in pill form. When in the form of a pill, they come in many different colors with pictures on the top to look
In 2011, researchers completed a pilot Phase II clinical trial to evaluate the efficacy of introducing MDMA, methylenedioxymethamphetamine, a psychedelic compound most widely known as the main ingredient in the recreational drug Ecstacy. It is recognized for producing feelings of “euphoria, empathy,
Methamphetamine and cocaine are both in the category of drugs known as stimulants. “Central nervous system are drugs that increase not only the activity of the CNS but also that of the ANS, (autonomic nervous system) resulting in both euphoria and mood enhancement” (Csiernik, R. 2014).
It is chemically like amphetamine [a medicine used to treat attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and narcolepsy, a sleep disorder]. People take Methamphetamine by: breathe in or burning it, swallowing (pill), sniffing, and even shooting up the powder that has been dissolved in water or alcohol due to the effect from the drug does not last long and people are most likely to take frequent doses. Indeed, people take Meth in form of overdoing it and giving up nutrition, sleep while continuing to take the drug each few hours for up to a week. (NIDA, 2007). According to NIDA, people would take constant amounts of meth to feel the effect.
MDMA or Ecstasy is a synthetic, psychoactive drug similar to methamphetamine a stimulant and mescaline a hallucinogen. Ecstasy has several slang names including Molly, E, Adam, Hug Drug, Love Drug, XTC, and Essence.
The usage of drugs is a very common practice in our society nowadays. The usage of drugs can vary from medical purposes to recreational purposes. What is drugs? ‘A drug is any chemical you take that affects the way your body works.’ (Science Museum, What is a drug?, n.d.) So this does not mean that drugs can only be in the form of pill, tablet, oral solution, and injection drugs can also in the form of tobacco that contains nicotine, or drinkable substance such as coffee and tea that contains caffeine and beer that contains alcohol. (Crocq, 2003) For some people nowadays recreational drugs already become a way of life.
Cocaine- Has similar actions as Amphetamines but the effects are more intense. People develop strong psychological dependence on this drug. A cheaper version of cocaine is called "crack".
