Drugs: The Epidemic Of Drug Abuse

The consequences that follow the use of any drug are unfavorable. Although many individuals may see drug addiction as a mere lifestyle choice, it is a problem that many individuals suffer from and inevitably a growing issue that leaves major social and economic impacts.

Often, the alcohol will bring out a violent temper and often, alcoholics abuse, physically and mentally, their friends and family. Drinking makes the drinker feel he is more confident. The drinker thinks he is in control, even if a little high, and he might get behind the wheel of his car and go for a drive. Drunk driving is deadly. Hundreds of thousands of people get killed every year due to drunk driving.(Castro 60) Other physical effects of drinking are vomiting, passing out and sometimes, if enough alcohol is consumed over a long enough period of time, or if mixed with other drugs, death.

Drugs, they are a wonder of medicine. They can be very helpful, but they can also be very dangerous .Some athletes use peds, (performance enhancing drugs) for muscular growth and or endurance and an example of them are anabolic steroids. They give the user more muscular endurance and growth so they can work out longer and grow more muscle in a shorter amount of time. These drugs are used in athletics to help the athletes win and have pretty bad symptoms, not only that but it is unfair to the rest of the competition for them to have that kind of advantage. athletes usually are compelled to use drugs because they want to win at all costs.this, win at all cost, mentality is a reason why athletes use PEDs.we need to improve the regulations of peds in sports.

There is evidence saying that athletes would use drugs if they knew that taking them would ensure they would win but not be caught. This shows that if there was no risk many of our athletes would put their bodies under too much stress by putting harmful products into their systems.

The effects of ethanol on humans starts when the alcohol enters the bloodstream, and the more alcohol that enters the bloodstream, there’s a higher risk for effects. Some of the effects include, “reduced inhibitions, slurred speech, motor impairment, confusion, memory problems, concentration problems, coma, breathing problems, and even death. Additionally, alcohol can cause car crashes and accidents, risky behavior, violent behavior, and suicide or homicide.” Alcohol can also take effect on the brain, heart (cardiomyopathy, arrhythmias, stoke, HBP), liver (alcoholic hepatitis), pancreas, can cause cancer, and can cause damage to one’s immune system.

The reason why athletes are so tempted to take drugs for an event, is all because of the fame you get when an athlete's comes first in the sport. Studies shows that companies assign the best athletes in movies, commercials , and sponsorships, which means they get paid each time the movie/commercial gets paid. Did you know that when athletes take steroids their chances of dying in the next five years is very high. The reason why this happens is because the human body can’t develop so fast in a short period of time.

Athletes have been using drugs for many years. Although, drug use is banned in sports, some athletes have found them to be necessary to perform. Scientist and doctors have found that the cons of drug use in sports outweighs the pros. It, is now a proven fact. Drugs are used in sports for three reasons. One, drugs are used by athletes as a coping mechanism. Two, drugs are used to enhance an athlete’s performance. Drugs are used by athletes to treat addiction.

It can cause cancer, peptic ulcers, cardiomyopathy, and liver cirrhosis. Not only that, but people who chronically drink alcohol may get deficiencies in thiamin (vitamin B1), and this can lead to Korsakoff 's syndrome. Alcohol is also extremely addictive. And it is the main reason why drunk driving exists. That’s why organizations such as MADD exists today because they are trying to prevent more innocent lives being taken away because a person was driving under the influence.

How serious of a problem is drug use among Athletes? Quoting Thomas Sowell “Steroids are dangerous and sometimes fatel. Yet, if some players use them, others will feel the pressure to use them as well, in order to compete.”(Parks 28) If an athlete feels the need to use drugs to be better at a sport, then what has this world come to? I believe the one and only way to get better at a sport is to train and practice. Athletes are harming and damaging their bodies so that they can shine in their sport. It is a serious problem now a days because it has become natural for some athletes to just inject themselves or get a pill and they think their just going to become a superstar, and the worst part is they actually do become better and people think its natural. “According to a study published in 2008, among students in grades 8 to 12 who

The consumption of alcoholic beverages can negatively affect your health mentally and physically. Although alcohol is normally used for social reasons and in moderation can be okay there still can be negative consequences. Certain situations can cause major issues down the road also, for instance; if you start drinking at an early age you are likely to have future problems, and if a woman is pregnant and she drinks alcohol the baby could have serious birth defects. Not to mention that there are over thirty different types of diseases that stem from heavy alcohol intake. Something that will be talked about a little later is how people often turn to alcohol for comfort, attempting to suppress their emotions or thoughts although this never truly solves their problem.

The aim of sport is to play fair and to have fun. When playing on a sport field, everyone is treated equivalently. If drugs were used by athletes the only thing they use it for, is to win. Winning isn't everything. Sport is more of a way to show off your talents and skills, not to be a lazy sloth and take drugs. More importantly is that you should keep your body healthy naturally and rewarding yourself with all the hard workouts.

The use of drugs is a controversial topic in society today. In general, addicts show a direct link between taking drugs and suffering from their effects. People abuse drugs for a wide variety of reasons. In most cases, the use of drugs will serve a type of purpose or will give some kind of reward. These reasons for use will differ with different kinds of drugs. Various reasons for using the substance can be pain relief, depression, anxiety and weariness, acceptance into a peer group, religion, and much more. Although reasons for using may vary for each individual, it is known by all that consequences of the abuse do exist. It is only further down the line when the effects of using can be seen.

There are some long-term effects on the body due to the abuse of alcohol. You can end up with brain damage, and dementia. Common disease resulting from excessive alcohol consumption are pancreatitis, gastritis, hepatitis, cirrhosis of the liver, and heart disease. Alcoholics are also at risk for developing cancer in the mouth, throat, esophagus and even the liver. You can also develop psychiatric problems such as depression and anxiety which may lead to suicide. Woman who are pregnant shouldn’t drink alcohol because it will cause damage to the fetus.
