The author is using personification by saying that dusk is pushing the estates into darkness. Dusk can not physically push something into darkness. The housing development that Sawyer lives in is very quite, and there are no people living in the houses. She always feels like someone is watching her and she doesn't feel safe. She has received scary anonymous notes. They have altered her life greatly which is why she has many reasons to be scared of the dark.
Sawyer and I both enjoy running track. She enjoys running for fun and competition. I like competition, but I also like running for exercise and fun just like her. We both enjoy running alone at our own pace, but we are not afraid to challenge someone in a race. Track is one of my favorite
The dark night accentuated the illuminous streetlights, which dimly lit their surroundings, casting eerie shadows upon the gates of the suburban properties. This is an example of setting, which is used to explain the area that the text will be taking place in. According to the example, the reader can assume the text takes place in a town, during night, when something not quite right is going on. Authors use setting in many ways that most readers may not be able to discern upon their first reading. Edgar Allen Poe in his text, The Fall of the House of Usher, and Joyce Carol Oates in her text Where is Here, use setting to paint a picture of their setting, set the atmosphere of the story, and how the setting influences the events of the story.
I posses a fondness for the sports basketball and track. I love how the adrenaline just pumps into my veins with a rush I can’t quite explain. It is this passion for sports that I also share with my passion for the medical field. Most sports need practice
He uses the brightness of light to show the personalities of the households. The text explains the houses as, “... the cottages and homes with their dark windows, and it was not unequal to walking through a graveyard and where only the faintest glimmers of firefly light appeared in flickers behind the windows.” This is demonstrating how little of individuality there is in the people of this city. The author says how it is like walking through a graveyard but there is a little bit of light, perhaps the light is to symbolizing how alive the people are; how joyous it is to live their lives. Compared to a graveyard technically the people are still “living” in this story to where a graveyard people are literally dead. Once they begin to talk about Leonard Mead’s house it explains the amounts of light, “They passed one house on one street a moment later, one house in an entire city of houses that were dark, but this one particular house had all of the electric lights brightly lit, every window a loud yellow illumination, square and warm in the cool darkness.” The author explains his house as bright but the rest on the city dark concluding this overwhelming idea of how different he is, how lively he is, giving an answer about why he was walking and why in the beginning in the story it was saying how he was the only one walking and that he would choose a route to take and endure this path
We see the first sign of darkness, when the narrator reads the headline of his brother’s arrest, the narrator’s face is described as “trapped in the darkness which roared outside” (58). From then on, Baldwin uses darkness at times of despair, fear, and hopelessness.
The story “The Lamp at Noon” by Sinclair Ross, the two main characters both struggle to survive in the dust storm with their baby. The setting is placed in prairies during the Great Depression. Moreover, the family owns a farm and Paul is struggling to maintain the farm because all the crops are destroyed by the dust storm. Sinclair Ross explores the symbols in his short story, The Lamp at Noon. For example, the lamp represents Ellen’s hope for the future of their marriage. The wind portrays their failing relationship between each other. Lastly, the land represents how Ellen and Paul feel deserted in their marriage. Although the short story “The Lamp at Noon” is about a failing farm, the symbols actually illustrate the hardships and struggle
First of all, the dark setting of the old man’s room manifests terror in the story. “His room was as black as pitch with the thick darkness (for the windows were close fastened, through fear of robbers), and so I knew that he could not see the opening of the door, ….”(56-59). The author directly portrays the dark scene of the old man’s room as black pitch, and the word “thick” emphasizes the deepness of the dark. The fact that the old man could see nothing because there’s no light makes the readers feel anxious. People depend on the light for their own protection, and they instinctively feel fear when it gets dark around
In this passage, darkness is personified by the author writing that it ‘squeezes’ you. This has the effect of making the whole thought of the dark more horrifying.
Track represents the major skills needed in my life; leadership, talent and comfort. Track was introduced to me from my basketball coach. The situation was mostly an eye for an eye, but instead it was he coached, I ran. The diversity of races and field events was extremely new to me.
Before Night Falls tells the story of Reinaldo Arenas, a Cuban writer who suffered for many years and dealt with tragic circumstances all throughout his life. Living during Fidel Castro’s harsh regime as a homosexual male led to several years of torture, for he was imprisoned, but ultimately set free. Additionally, his writing was bold and went against everything that Castro represented, and he took extreme risks to get his work published in other countries. The world heard the prolific voice of Arenas, while the Cuban government, his fellow writers, and even his lovers tried to silence him. Arenas was an extremely important figure in Latin culture. This is not simply because his work was profound; his life gives us a deeper look at the difficulties of struggling with homosexuality, masculinity, and finding freedom. He embodies resilience, charisma, determination, and at the same time fragility, weakness and pain.
Bogard begins his article by recounting a personal story - a summer spent in a lake in Minnesota where he experienced “woods so dark [his] hands disappeared before [his] eyes.” In describing this brief anecdote, Bogard provokes the audience to question and recount a time when they were able to enjoy a world surrounded by natural darkness. By drawing in his readers with a personal encounter about night darkness, the author means to present natural darkness as a mysterious yet alluring forces of nature. With

The poem, "The Night House" by Billy Collins, is very symbolic and meaningful, and most people can relate to because everyone has something they are not content with in life. Collins is a great, straightforward writer that people can depict with in his poems because he is practical and uses simple things or everyday experiences in an easy way. This poem in particular is very symbolic and effortless to analyze because it is the everyday life--- going to work, coming home, and then going to sleep--- the cycle then repeats over and over. He talks about "the body works" at the beginning (which sets the tone for the rest of the poem), which symbolizes that our hearts and minds are not always into what we are doing. He talks and illustrates figurative parts of the body: the heart, mind, conscience, and soul. When he talks about the woman sleeping, all these figurative body parts are restless and come out at night to do what they really want to do.
