After thirty years of Dutch rule, it was handed over to British forces in 1664. However, when it comes to language, manners and architecture, New York retained essential Dutch characteristics. At the time the author was born, many of these customs were preserved among the descendants of the old Dutch settlers
Between 1492-1776, although many people moved to the “New World”, North America lost population due to the amount of Indians dying from war and diseases and the inability of colonists to replace them. John Murrin states, “losers far outnumbered winners” in “ a tragedy of such huge proportions that no one’s imagination can easily encompass it all.” This thought of a decreasing population broadens one’s perspective of history from that of an excluded American tale full of positivity to that of a more unbiased, all-encompassing analysis. The Indians and slaves have recently been noted as a more crucial part of history than previously accredited with.
In spite of the many Indian massacres, Jamestown still grew to be a successful colony. The London Company was the main founder of Jamestown. The London Company's founders believed that there were precious metals in America so they sent a group of settlers to Jamestown. The trip to the Americas was not a very easy one for these settlers. They had to overcome many obstacles just to get to the Americas. In 1619 the House of Burgesses was formed which marked the first legislative body in America. Jamestown was plagued by many disasters. They were faced with one continuous disaster, Indian wars. They fought over land with Indians for many years. The London Company, creation of the colony, and
The Massachusetts bay Colony was found y the puritans and religious minority group who migrated to the New World seeking to create a model religious community The Puritans believed that the anglican church needed to be purified of the influences of catholicism.
When it comes to wealth and power, people want it all for themselves. They will do anything in order to claim it and call it theirs. Some people are stronger than others, which makes their journeys easier to win over others. English colonists arrived to the New World after seeing Spanish colonization gaining wealth and being able to send gold and sliver back home. While English colonists were trying to gain wealth, they had to use Native Americans. Native Americans on Jamestown had everything that English colonists wanted, therefore they relayed on them and took advantage of the natives. The treatment of Native Americans by English colonists in Jamestown was unavoidable because English colonists arrived to the New World with a single goal, gaining wealth. English colonists and indigenous people could have never peacefully co-existed because both sides knew
Throughout the 17th century, the English faced many hardships. The settlers of Jamestown had faced misfortune of the new land such as disease and malnutrition, and failure of crops. Over time the English built their economic and social structure with perfecting crops, indentured slaves and building a new society that would spark others to explore.
Since the first civilization Jamestown, the colonists slowly adapted and improved the environment of the land and gained more and more people due to the rapid overpopulation in England. But as the more advanced and smarter the people got. They began to import and export goods to other countries as a growing country, the British began to levy all kinds of trade regulation and taxes, all to stop the aid it was giving to other world power country that British was enemy and the selfish greed British had to only be the one gaining from the colonist. Therefore causing unsettling feelings of the colonies towards them, as they felt they are been treated unfairly and taking away what they felt is their own right and own money.
Most of it was settled along the New Amsterdam was purchased from the Native Americans and governed by Peter Stuyvesant. This area was given to the Duke of York by King Charles II, and an English soldier unit forced New Netherlands to become New York. New York never got to experience self rule after the English took over. The colonists had no local representative government. Thomas Dongan only temporarily ruled New York through a general assembly before New York became directly controlled by England. The colonists had no local representative

The Dutch in 1609 sent an English sea captain named Henry Hudson, who came to the findings of Delaware Bay and New York on his voyage. Along this land would be referred to New Netherland. 1626 the Dutch would also purchase Manhattan from the Native Indians. In Manhattan the Dutch would establish a territory called New Amsterdam to inhabit, New Amsterdam became the capital of New Netherland. The economy of Colonial New Jersey was a simple one, very much like that of other colonies and different types of establishments. Said economy, was set heavily on, you guessed it, trade, imports and exports. Occupations of New Jersey’s citizens varied, but not so far out of the normal range, but just far enough to include the following; Farming, hunting, resource gathering and many types of manual labor, such as Carpentry. Many people's’ incomes depended on exporting, weather it back to Europe, or to another colony it was a staple in the economy. Previously mentioned was farming, livestock like cattle were grown a lot. Also largely produced was wheat, to make flour, which was exported.
In 1606 the Virginia company set out to establish a colony in the new world. They hoped to find gold and other precious materials in an area the Spanish didn’t control. On April 17, 1607, the expedition spotted land. In order to not be attacked by the Spanish, they established the colony near the mouth of the James River, in the Chesapeake Bay. Because of this decision, they were more susceptible to attacks from the 13,000 natives that were in the area. They named the colony Jamestown. As they set up they also panned for gold. The natives conducted small raids on groups outside the fort, which increased the anxiousness of the colonists. This resulted in some colonists mistaking each other for natives and shooting one another. Virginia was in
Before the colony of Jamestown first rooted its foundations in the swampy, disease-ridden James riverbanks of Virginia in 1607, the Pamunkey tribe of Native Americans had already gathered a century of knowledge and expectations of the would-be English conquerors that settled Jamestown. However, the Jamestown settlers proved an unexpected rival for the Pamunkeys and their powerful emperor Powhatan, and a force he could not have reckoned with based on his early information. Both the English and Native leaders met on the James with somewhat condescending assumptions about each other that led to a long history of wary truce and mutual prosperity as well as vengeful rivalry and all-out war.
The disastrous beginning of the settlements in Jamestown taught colonists their mistakes and methods to improve their colonies. By the end of seventeenth century, they have made a variety of accomplishments in the North America. Developments in the later colonies reflect early unsuccessful Jamestown experience, that left deep root in the New World. I think the colonists learned and applied the Jamestown lessons of leadership, relationship with Indians, and effective agriculture into other colonies by establishing organizations like the House of Burgesses in order to control colonial activities.
