Dweck believes that someone who possesses a “growth mindset” is almost the polar opposite of someone who has a “fixed mindset.” A person with a growth mindset is able to think positively and see the silver lining of an unfavorable situation. They are able to improve from their mistakes, and always finds a way to become better at different aspects of life. The way that people think about their ability to change and grow can impact their lives. In her book, Mindset: The new psychology of success, Carol Dweck introduces this way of viewing of the world as our mindsets. She proposes that there are two different types of mindsets: growth and fixed. People with a growth mindset see their abilities as something that can be cultivated and changed through effort. They are more willing to take chances to learn and grow.
She started to do study with children to see how they would react with difficulty. What Carol found out was extremely surprising to her. She learned that some children loved a difficult challenge and wanted more of it. The children didn’t think they were even failing when they couldn’t figure the challenge out. They thought they were learning. Dweck states that her research has been going on for twenty years. Her research shown the view you create for yourself can affects the choices in your life. There are two different types of mindset, Dweck talked about. One of them, is fixed mindset and the other is growth mindset. These two different type of mindset can affect you in sports, relationship, school, and the workplace. The fixed mindset is you have importances to prove yourself, time after time. Dweck compares and contrasts two basic mindsets: the growth mentality, which holds that abilities may be improved via hard work and persistence, and the fixed mindset, which holds that abilities are inherent and unchanging. Dweck is an instructor from Stanford University. She wrote the book “Mindset” that is based on inspiration, and of course, the growth mindset. The book influenced business owners and teachers on their perspective of their peers. Dweck works in the areas of social, developmental, and personality related psychology, and studies the mentality people use to construct their actions. She looks for where the mindsets begin and how it affects the student/employees experience and their impression on achieving their goals. Dweck researches the field of motivation, why people do or don’t succeed, and how to achieve success.
Dweck defines her understanding of a growth mindset as, “The growth mindset says all of these things can be developed. All – you, your partner, and the relationship – are capable of growth and change” (Maria Popova, BrainThinkings). Therefore, the weaker mindset would be known as fixed mindset, “In a fixed mindset, the ideal is stant, perfect, and perpetual compatability. Like it was meant to be. Like riding off into the sunset. Like they liked happily ever after” (Maria Popova, BrainThinkings).
The first mindset Dweck discussed in her book was the fixed mindset. The fixed mindset produces the most negative results. This mindset is based on talents, genes, and ability levels. The fixed mindset believes that these things are unable to be changed and were determined before you were born. The fixed mindset does not believe in effort.
After watching the two videos in class about growth and fixed mindsets I have found out the differences between the two different mindsets. The two different mindsets are growth mindset and fixed mindset. To have a growth mindset you are not afraid to push yourself. If you have a fixed mindset you tend to hide from challenging yourself and you accept the outcome even if it means failure. People with growth mindsets tend to grow while people with fixed mindsets are fixed in the position that they’re in and they are not going to go anywhere because they are afraid to challenge themselves.
“The New Psychology of Success”, these terms have an aura of a certain mind altering power. The read, Mindset by Carol S. Dweck, focused upon two specific mindsets: fixed mindset vs. growth mindset. Dweck shuffles through personal experiences as well as researched experiences to showcase and explain each mindset. Although I personally have had both mindsets, consistent success was only attainted through ensuring a growth mindset, similar to the experiences presented by Dweck, and this success is achievable to anyone who instills this mindset.
A child in his growing period learns to make certain sets of assumptions or notations from the events happening in his growth environment. These sets of assumptions or notations develops into ideas the child uses in his growth period and they are called mindsets. Carol Dweck categorizes these mindsets into two categories called Growth Mindset and Fixed Mindset. A Person who restricts his basic abilities and talents to a set of fixed traits is set to have a Fixed mindset. The ideas of such a person revolves around this mindset. The goals of such a person are selfish or self-centered. However, the person with a growth mindset has a complete different ideology. Carol Dweck writes about an excellent concept to live by in Mindset: The New Psychology of Success, although it is not necessarily a new concept. She words her concept as the “growth” mindset versus the “fixed” mindset. The “growth” mindset is what she suggests the reader should translate into different aspects of their everyday life. The growth mindset is about learning from mistakes, and always trying as hard as possible to improve oneself. Whereas, the fixed mindset is when people have the idea that they were born with quantifiable traits, and are not able to change or improve them. In my opinion, for the growth mindset, she is essentially just rewording what I call the golden rule which is “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try, again”.
Something that could be considered bias in this work could be the fact that Dweck focuses on writing positive things about growth mindset and only negative things when it comes to fixed mindset. Since she did not provide any positive aspects of fixed mindsets or negative aspects of growth mindsets we could consider that she is in favor of growth mindsets. Writers should provide both points of views, not only one. This piece of work could had been better if Dweck had provided a counterargument.
Additionally, embracing new challenges develop students' intelligence. According to Carol Dweck in "Brainology," says that students with a fixed mindset "are afraid of challenges and devastated by setbacks," and scholars with a growth mindset "relish challenges and are resilient in the face of setbacks." Furthermore, students with a growth mindset strongly believe that their intelligence can be developed by learning and relishing new challenges; nevertheless, students with a fixed mindset believe that their fixed ability might not be set to do
Do you look at things differently than the person next to you? People have always thought in different ways. In Carol Dweck’s passage “Excerpt From Self-Theories, Their Role in Motivation, Personality, and Development,” Dweck states and explains that there are two different mindsets most people have, a fixed mindset and a growth mindset. The differences are simple and she gives scenarios that exhibit each. Dweck states that people either have one or the other, but I don’t agree with that.
There are two types of mindsets often compared, growth mindset and a fixed mindset. When analyzing these two mindsets against each other there are differences. For example, a fixed mindset can be a person that is not open to learning new information. They may not try any harder than they feel they need to, thus never improving on things such as school subjects.
