Dystopia Of The Community In The Giver

Imagine a world with no control over who you marry, what your job is, what you wear, or what you get to eat for every meal. This is what it’s like in The Giver by Lois Lowry. The people live in a community that is severely more controlled than ours. We have the freedom to have a pet, have as many kids as you want, and say what you want. The final reason that I think the Giver portrays a dystopian society is their method of release. They may think that they’re sorting out good and bad, but what do they know? If they don’t know anything about love, why should they know about pain, suffering, death, and war? Everyone outside of the releasing room thought their dear friend was going Elsewhere… but the people inside that horrid room witnessed, or committed, the murder of innocents. There were no such things as identical twins; the lighter one would be killed. The people had no perception of death, for all they know that little baby, which just happened to be 3 ounces lighter than his brother, could really be going Elsewhere. Everything has been picked out for you whether you like it or not. The community in the Giver is a utopian society. All members have a clear-cut set of rules they must follow. The rules were made to get rid of pain and fix society’s problems. On the occasion of when the truth is revealed Jonas, a unique boy, questions society, and its motives. Personal choice is one of the most important things, even in the event that it may cause pain or suffering. Individuals within the community should have a right to pick their spouse, have their own children, and pick their careers.

The Giver portrays a seemingly utopic community in which all members follow a strict set of rules. In the community where Jonas lives, a rigid set of rules dictates and regulates every moment of the lives of its citizens. Although there are few exceptions, People in the community strictly adhere to the rules.  The community in The Giver may seem like the perfect community in the beginning. But the rules are to be shown to have smothered and controlled what we think of as spontaneous, emotional, and personal. “Two children – one male, one female – to each family unit. Sameness within The Giver Imagine living within a world where one can't choose their job, where at a young age one is assigned by a group of elders. Imagine a place in which one cannot choose that special person to be their wife or husband, a place where nobody is special. Visualize a world where one cannot have their own children, where somebody has to take care of children that is biologically not their own. In The Giver by Lois Lowry, this place exists every single day.

Though our modern day society isn’t perfect, we have a book call The Giver that shows how an ideal society should live. Without love, compassion, or fear, the characters in The Giver live happily and perfectly. While in modern day society we are far from perfect and have all those feelings, we try to make the best of our lives. Even though we love in different worlds, there are certain distinctions that make our society alike, but also different. Such as families, rules and laws, and individuality. These are some of the things that seperate a utopian society and a dystopian society.

In modern society, the world is swiftly beginning to resemble a dystopian society. For instance, in The Giver Lois Lowry states, “We really have to protect people from wrong choices” (99). Jonas said this after he had an epiphany that if the community allows its citizens to make painless decisions than they will want to make more serious decisions. If the citizen decided the wrong job or spouse than it could have an extensive impact on the community. To protect people from choosing wrong the government will find a way to control society’s decisions.

An example of a utopian society is The Giver, in it, all pain, fear, war, and hatred are eliminated so there is no competition for all the citizens look and act basically the same. The Giver controls what the citizens know, which is nothing about the past, eliminating disagreement. This is a utopia taking into consideration that everyone and everything is the same. Although the new Giver, Jonas, wants his community to be different, so it ends up being a dystopia. There is loads of action involved like when Jonas and baby Gabriel escape into elsewhere. In the modern day you can choose who you love, and choose what you do. The society in The Giver has very few similarities compared to our society today; however, there are many more differences that set them apart.

The Giver world is a dystopia because they have to release some kids because they aren't good enough. It would also not be a very good place to live in because when some people fail they have to be released, a release is when they inject a shot into your head and you die. It also would not be a very good place to live in because some people want to run away because they are afraid of where they live. These are the reasons why the Giver is a dystopia. The first reason is that they have to release children because they aren't perfect like the rest of the community.

The Giver is Good example of dystopia because of the author give it the title for it. So the giver gives no freedom or some sort of choice like your name was chosen for you, and the Ceremony of Naming your baby name wasn’t chosen by your birth family it was by a list. Adding on Pushing on the community not make it good was strict rules because like for every big event you go to it like I am sick nope take this pills and we got to go. Plus 2 kids in one family one male and one female, can’t have any disorder you will released ( killed). People can’t be late or you apologize to a group of people. Last but not the released (heh get it) harsh punishment so basically if you do wrong or break 3 simple rules you will be killed like put meds in your head to kill you in a matter of seconds. In the book The Giver the community is a utopia in the beginning and dystopia at the end. Because everyone is the same and there is no hunger or starvation. There is also no feelings, no suffering, or no pain. But once you get farther into the story the community becomes a dystopia because they kill babies because either they our twins and they don’t want to have a relationship with love in it ,because love is not allowed in their community. That why it is a utopia at first then at the end of the book it becomes a dystopia.

Have you heard of Utopia before? It is an imaginary ideal state without any wars and famines which is similar to the community in The Giver. This community is manipulating everything: people's marriages, their property and jobs, and even the climate and relief in the state; this seems that everyone gets their necessities equally without choices. Although this idea can avoid any unfair between the citizens ostensibly, the book reveals the dark side of it and later turns to a dystopian one.

Would the community in The Giver be considered a utopia or a dystopia? People that are choosing between the two would mostly choose dystopia and some might choose utopia . This leads to the most chosen , a dystopia, for the main choice. The community in The Giver would most likely be a dystopia because citizens are always under surveillance , they cannot choose for themselves , and everyone is the same.
