In “Happiness 101,” Harvard professor Dr. Tal Ben-Shahar presents his ideas pertaining to the achievability of happiness. He begins by discussing how individuals must give themselves permission to be human, so that they can feel the negative feelings before they reach the positive feelings. If negative feelings are held back without release, then they only intensify eventually blocking out the positive feelings. Ben-Shahar continues his presentation to the topic of managing stress on the micro, mezza, and macro levels. These levels include the ideas of meditation, sleep, taking time off, vacations, and the “three deep breaths.” Simplifying agendas and practicing quality over quantity has a positive effect on stress levels as well. At the conclusion of his presentation, Ben-Shahar discusses the positive effect of practicing gratitude on health, happiness, and well-being. After listening to Tal Ben-Shahar’s presentation, I completely agree with every point that Ben-Shahar uses over the topics of giving permission to be human, stress management, and practicing gratitude covered throughout his presentation over happiness.

Nursing care incorporates not only a compassionate attitude but passion for care of patients. The caring component of nursing cannot be measured, rather dissected through theory within the clarification of what nurses do. Systemically this is all supported through abundant theories and theorist. The nursing profession emphasizes on holistic care which is defined as treatment of the whole person. Within this skill is the admittance of problems that are biomedical but also opportune clarification of the well-being and health of a human that introduces added indicators of disease that are non-visualized (Powers, 2011).

Human flourishing, one of the National League of Nursing competencies, refers to the overall state of well-being of an individual within multiple contexts. This competency celebrates diversity, freedom, happiness, and holistic well-being of individuals within their families, communities, and society (Nursing Framework and Program Outcomes, n.d.). The concept of human flourishing embodies the elements of contrast and conflict in life, connection with the surrounding world, loving kindness, and harmony and stillness (McCormack, B., & Titchen, 2014). It is within both the challenges that arise in life and the joyous moments that the individual grows physically, psychologically, socially, and spiritually. Human flourishing requires one to embrace the unknown, the uncomfortable, and the contrasts that occur in life and find a sense of inner peace that enables one to show kindness and love to others (McCormack, B., & Titchen, 2014).
Theory analysis offers a systematic method for identifying the strengths and weaknesses of a theory that ultimately helps validate its usefulness in directing and influencing clinical practice (Linder, 2010). Using the seven-step process outlined by Walker and Avant (2011), this paper will provide a theory analysis of the self-determination theory (SDT) to examine its meaningfulness and contribution to the nursing discipline with special attention to work engagement among nurses. Self-determination theory is a motivational and personality theory that explores the socioenvironmental causes that influence a person’s tendency toward psychological health and wellbeing, enhanced performance, and self-motivated behavior (Podlog & Brown, 2016). SDT analyzes intrinsic and extrinsic motivations to explain why people behave the way they do; specifically, when the basic psychological needs of autonomy, relatedness, and competence are met, self-motivated behaviors and effective performance will be actualized (Podlog & Brown, 2016).
Thriving theory is defined as “the ongoing process of growing through continuous human environment interactions resulting in social, physical, and psychological resilience and growth” (Haight, Barba, Tesh, & Courts, 2002, p. 18). A study done to chronicle the importance of everyday activity engagement for those residing in a nursing home and how it is related to thriving showed a positive association identified between the two. The most substantial influence in the nursing home resident thriving was the engagement in activities, dressing nicely, and spending time with someone who they enjoyed being around (Björk et al., 2017). Björk et al. , (2017) states that participating in meaningful activities and having a positive relationship with others suggests that the research results are consistent with thriving theory and residents in nursing homes are shown to have a better quality of life by participating in engaging activities on a daily
In The Theory of Comfort, understanding of comfort can promote nursing care that is holistic and inclusive of physical, psychospiritual, social, and environmental interventions (McEwen & Wills, 2014). The mind/body/spirit is related to comfort, as one’s thoughts and emotions can distort their cognitive reasoning by causing illness or delaying recovery. The mind is a powerful tool that can change the outlook on how one thinks. Intervening variables can stress a person thus decreasing health-seeking behaviors. One has to change how the mind is thinking. The mind has to have a positive outlook so that the body and spirit of the person can obtain optimal comfort. Relief, ease, and transcendence play a part by if a person makes it through these steps, then more positive health-seeking behaviors can take place. If the person has a negative response, then the body and spirit aspect will not be a positive one. There is a reciprocal relationship that exists between health-seeking behaviors and comfort because health-seeking behaviors also can enhance comfort. The body is then affected by the actions the person takes. If they are in a positive state and relief, ease, and transcendence was achieved in their mind, then the

Any nurse would admit that preparation to becoming a nurse is a difficult task. Mostly because the practice of nursing consists of many things to follow in order be a great nurse for the patient. To make the preparation less difficult for nurses or nurse to be, Ida Jean Orlando contributed to the Discipline of the Nursing Process to further prepare those in nursing. The Discipline of Nursing Process is a theoretical approach to nursing that follows a nurse-to-patient relationship that would improve the patient’s behavior to seek beneficence and autonomy of the patient (Orlando, 1972). This provides nurses or upcoming nurse the strategies to deal with real life circumstances in nursing and improves the skills of the nurse to improve a patient care. This piece will focus on the theorist, Ida Jean Orlando, the meaning of the nursing process and the reason for the nursing process, any discrepancies that may be associated with nursing such as medical procedures and professional nurses, studies associated with the use of the nursing process and how the nursing process influence personally.
