As an early years practitioner you will recognise that children’s play is closely linked to their learning and development. Children learn in so many different ways but you will notice that they learn mainly through play. When children are able to do many different activity’s that allows them to lean but have fun at the same time thy will find what they are doing fun and will engage the children. It is important that when in you your setting you set up a variety of educational activity’s this way the children will be able to choose freely what they want to do.

Early childhood is the the time period when a child opens his eyes in the world and it continues upto the age of 8 years old (Masten et al. “NAME OF ARTICLE”)This is really the time in which the brain of the child starts growing and basis for the subsequences of development. Early childhood period starts at home the very first stages of life. Parents have a great role in childhood development. Then the second factor or place which has great effects on childhood development is the school or daycares. I believe that as an early childhood educator my goal will be to promote the physical, social, emotional, and cognitive development of each child. I also believe that play should be the base of learning since children learn best by doing. I believe that a balance between teacher-directed and child-initiated activities is essential balance can be developed by using the developmentally appropriate practice approach, which means that activities should be “appropriate for each child and relevant to the child’s ability, needs and interests, also including the child’s family and being respectful to the child’s culture.

A world of structured, gray, and unamused faces isn’t the environment for crazy, colorful, happy kids; so why should we force this onto them earlier than needed? David Kohn’s article “Let Kids Learn Through Play” speaks of this issue, shedding new light onto the subject. In his article, Kohn highlights many of the misconceptions that come with early childhood learning, and many drawbacks that may come from the rising trend. He also talks about the struggles young students will face in a structured learning environment, and how it may actually be harmful towards them, instead of beneficial. The terms “play”, “learn” and “teach” are commonly used in the early childhood sector. This essay attempts to define and interconnect these terms to produce a holistic understanding of how play can be used as a medium to help children learn.

The last six weeks have been some of the most challenging and rewarding six weeks in recent memory. My Early Childhood Special Education placement was never boring and some days I went home and just disgusted how much information I learned. Relationship building,assessment and lesson planning for a very diverse group of learners were the biggest take aways.

Youthful children need handy, hands on learning encounters in light of their hobbies and individual developmental level. While we all can agree that mathematic is crucial and a structured classroom curriculum to meet the demands of a global society are important, other life skills, which are also important, are provided in an environment where the child is free to direct his/her learning, which often relies heavily on play. In her book Theories of Childhood, Mooney (2013) wrote that Erik Erikson believed “if we encourage preschool children to use their energy in an active and involved way, their confidence will grow. Their competence will increase.” This means that recess and play time are critical to development.

Education and development plays an important role in young children’s lives and children that participate in an early educational program set the foundation to achieve more success for post-secondary education; therefore by enforcing an early learning foundation will better enrich children’s lives.

Over the past few years, the count of immigrants have astronomically increased in the United Stated, this has caused the educational environment throughout schools to reflect a large number of diverse students. Because of the change in the system, the way students are assessed and what teachers need to know have also adjusted. English Language Learners are a group of students with different languages, backgrounds, needs, and goals. Some ELL students have only come to the United States and speak no English and have a family that also speak no English, while some students might live in a home where only English is spoken. Based on the ELL student’s background, learning style and other factors, the way they take in information differs. Most general knowledge teachers only provide ELL students with the basic requirements to gain academic success in the Early Childhood Education classroom. Schools sometimes provide ELD (English Language Development) teachers, ELL specialists and other resources including programs and dictionaries to help students develop their English, while other schools believe that by placing the student in a natural environment where they can interact with other students who speak English then the student will eventually learn how to speak English. As a former ELL student who personally experienced the difficulty of learning and adapting to a new language and also as a student who has experienced various classrooms with diverse students, my opinion is that

Early childhood development is such an intriguing aspect to research because this is really a point in life where children act without reasoning and logic skills. The actions and thinking patterns for two to six year olds is not wrong, it is just illogical and children these ages cannot perform while thinking about a larger perspective other than themselves; which also makes this so fascinating. In my research and observations, I focused on how children during this developmental stage act and not so much about the cognition and processing a child does to make them behave in these certain ways.The theories and ideas are steadily researched, but less rarely show examples ,that are representative of the population of children in early childhood that support the theories. Instead of exploring phenomena more deeply to reiterate and validate these theories of brain functioning and processing, such as Piaget’s preoperational thought theory, I will instead explore a few phenomena and theories to demonstrate what they are and how they apply to early childhood development using applicable personal experience including observations done myself and the observations of previously conducted research and face-to-face interviews to support these ideas.
