A world of structured, gray, and unamused faces isn’t the environment for crazy, colorful, happy kids; so why should we force this onto them earlier than needed? David Kohn’s article “Let Kids Learn Through Play” speaks of this issue, shedding new light onto the subject. In his article, Kohn highlights many of the misconceptions that come with early childhood learning, and many drawbacks that may come from the rising trend. The last six weeks have been some of the most challenging and rewarding six weeks in recent memory. My Early Childhood Special Education placement was never boring and some days I went home and just disgusted how much information I learned. Over the past few years, the count of immigrants have astronomically increased in the United Stated, this has caused the educational environment throughout schools to reflect a large number of diverse students. Because of the change in the system, the way students are assessed and what teachers need to know have also adjusted. English Language Learners are a group of students with different languages, backgrounds, needs, and goals. Some ELL students have only come to the United States and speak no English and have a family that also speak no English, while some students might live in a home where only English is spoken. Based on the ELL student’s background, learning style and other factors, the way they take in information differs. Most general knowledge teachers only provide ELL students with the basic requirements to gain academic success in the Early Childhood Education classroom. Schools sometimes provide ELD (English Language Development) teachers, ELL specialists and other resources including programs and dictionaries to help students develop their English, while other schools believe that by placing the student in a natural environment where they can interact with other students who speak English then the student will eventually learn how to speak English. Early childhood development is such an intriguing aspect to research because this is really a point in life where children act without reasoning and logic skills. The actions and thinking patterns for two to six year olds is not wrong, it is just illogical and children these ages cannot perform while thinking about a larger perspective other than themselves; which also makes this so fascinating. In my research and observations, I focused on how children during this developmental stage act and not so much about the cognition and processing a child does to make them behave in these certain ways.The theories and ideas are steadily researched, but less rarely show examples ,that are representative of the population of children in early childhood that support the theories. Instead of exploring phenomena more deeply to reiterate and validate these theories of brain functioning and processing, such as Piaget’s preoperational thought theory, I will instead explore a few phenomena and theories to demonstrate what they are and how they apply to early childhood development using applicable personal experience including observations done myself and the observations of previously conducted research and face-to-face interviews to support these ideas.
