“Please, would you look at me? I am an old man, and the only thing I can do is collect cans and bottles to help keep food on my table, and I have no reason to go up there. Is there anything else I can do?” Ernest spoke so convincingly the officer believed him. Handing him a card, he said, “If we have any more questions, we will return. If you remember anything, please call us.” Convinced, regardless of what the neighbors had said, Mr. Cassidy knew nothing about the mountainside, the officer thanked him and went to his car. Ernest grabbed his keys, went out the back door, got his truck, and drove around the neighborhood to make sure no one was following him. While driving to his friend’s office, he kept thinking about the many animals they had rescued through the years and refused to feel guilty about what they did.
