Earthquakes have the potential to destroy and cause a lot of harm or they just make the ground shake a little. Sometimes earthquakes with low magnitudes cause a lot of harm, and a high magnitude one causes a small amount of damage. This usually isn’t the case. Two Earthquakes with high magnitudes each caused a different amount of damage. These two are the earthquake that happened in Sumatra, Indonesia in December 26, 2004, and the earthquake that happened in Rat Island , Alaska in April 2, 1965.
The Rat Island earthquake had the magnitude of 8.7, and the Sumatra earthquake had the magnitude of 9.1. While both of these are high magnitudes but the one in Sumatra was devastating, while the one in Rat Island made a small amount of damage.

Thanks to the technology and inquiring minds we are able to study past events like the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and the 1964 Alaska earthquake. In comparing these two events we can get an overview of what happened and better prepare ourselves for something like that in the future.

To begin with, what exactly caused both of these quakes? Well, a cycle is happening above as well as beneath the surface. This cycle involves the movement of tectonic plates. Both of these earthquakes were caused by the movement of two very different plates. The Chilean earthquake was caused by the Nazca Plate sub-ducting under the South American plate. This means these two plates collided along the plate boundaries, which made one slip underneath the other. The bottom plate slowly pushed the top plate, and was then released causing the earthquake. The magnitude for the quake was of 9.5, being the largest earthquake ever recorded. The Haiti quake was caused by a lateral strike slip motion. There was a separation in the boundary region of the Caribbean Plate and North American Plate. As the plates glided past one another, strain and compression was building along the fault. The greatest Southern California earthquake in modern history was the Fort Tejon Earthquake on January 9, 1857 that measured 8.0 on the Richter Scale. The Loma Prieta earthquake of 1989 was the first major earthquake occurring on that fault since the previous major earthquake which was The Great San Francisco Earthquake of 1909. The 1909 Great San Francisco Earthquake caused significantly more deaths which generated up to an estimated three thousand, and caused more damage mostly from the fires that occurred in the aftermath. The 1909 earthquake occurred on the same fault however it had a much longer section of the fault slip and was reportedly a much larger earthquake in comparison because of that. The 2010 Canterbury Earthquake happened near Christchurch, New Zealand on the South Island on September 4, 2010 at 4:35 a.m. (see figure 1) (Te Ara Encyclopedia of New Zealand, n.d.). The focus of the earthquake was at 5 km or 3.1 miles below the surface (United States Geological Survey, n.d.). It had a 7.1 magnitude on the Richter Scale and it caused widespread damage in the city. Two people were injured and one person died from a heart attack, but it was not known if it was related to the earthquake. There were very few causalities because most people were home at the time of the earthquake. It was caused by movement along a previously unknown fault in the Canterbury Plains. The fault appeared about 50 miles from the boundary between the Australian and Pacific tectonic plates (Te Ara Encyclopedia of New Zealand, n.d.).
I believe that earthquakes are way more dangerous than volcanoes. I believe that they are more dangerous than volcanoes because they can affect any city, state, or country at any time anywhere.
