Edgar Allen Poe is a writer of the 1800’s. He has written many classics and has a unique style. Edgar fits into a gothic romance style that was prevalent at the time of his writing. Science at the time was making leaps and bounds and often scientists were immoral and hypocritical. Materialistic items play a key role in the world today. People use these items, such as technological appliances, to fulfill their daily wants and needs. However, most people do not realize the negative effects of such a heavy reliance on material goods. In “The Allegory of the Cave,” Plato shares his idea that an overdependence on items can negatively affect ethical decisions. This idea is discussed in “The Veldt,” by Ray Bradbury, The Truman Show, by Peter Weir, and Daniel Key’s novel, Flowers for Algernon. Throughout all three stories, characters greatly rely on items and other people, leading them to make unethical decisions. In some cases, people are objectified as a result of being needed, desired, and treated unfairly. In “The Veldt,” The Truman Show, and Flowers for Algernon, an overreliance on items leads to a loss of focus on morals and what is ethically important.

Poe is a very complicated author. His literary works are perplexed, disturbing, and even grotesque. His frequent illnesses may have provoked his engrossment in such things. In 1842 Dr. John W. Francis diagnosed Poe with sympathetic heart trouble as well as brain congestion. He also noted Poe's inability to withstand stimulants such as drugs and alcohol (Phillips 1508). These factors may have motivated him to write The Tell-Tale-Heart, The Cask of Amontillado, and The Black Cat. All of these stories are written in or around 1843, shortly after Poe became afflicted. Edgar Allan Poe enjoyed writing about death, sinful acts, and how others felt towards sin.

I believe the cage is representing the husbands mind while he was human. While the husband was human, he felt trapped and would mentally trap himself with envy that he had over his jealousy and assumption that his wife was having an affair. He would also trap himself physically by locking himself in the bathroom during their fights and also by staying in the relationship even though he knew it was over. Before, he was trapped by these emotions and now that he wishes to be mentally and physically free, he is trapped in a cage.

Edgar Allan Poe, a very famous author, had a hard life when it came to others dying. It seemed as though almost everyone he loved died of tuberculosis. When he was little, his father abandoned him and his family, and his mother later died or illness. He was adopted by the Allan family where he was dearly loved by his foster mother, but not so much his foster father. Later in life, many members of his family had died, and he married his 13 year old cousin, Virginia, when when he was 25. She had later died of tuberculosis, which set Poe over the edge. He started to get drunk more often and gamble more. In Edgar Allan Poe’s stories, he includes love connections, loss of loved ones, and the inevitability of death, which all reflect on to his own life.
