Education And Community Service

I have been a part of different activities for my community service. I have helped the TLC preschool afterschool with cleaning tables and toys once all the children have gone home. I have also been to the shelly baird school where they disabled kids go for schooling and helped out there with the students doing their work and played games .I am currently in “Dude Be Nice Club” and recently we participated in project night night where we would gather donated security blankets a book or stuffed animal and deliver them to children who have very little in homeless shelters. Throughout my life I always thought the little things that we do to help people in our community are the things that made the biggest difference. I learned in church one day on a Sunday about how to improve ourselves to get closer to God. The pastor said that we are so busy with our daily activities that sometimes we get distracted on things that matter the most. Sometimes even though we might be busy, we should just take a brief moment to help others in need. That is why I find community service important because you are not just building our career we are also building our character as a leader and as a citizen.

From day one my mom taught me that you will get more satisfaction giving to and helping others than you ever will by just doing things for yourself. I truly believe this. Volunteering to teach swimming lessons, organizing recycled items, and visiting the nursing home are all things I have been involved in and doing each of those I have learned more and more about how important service is. Just recently my classmates and I helped an elderly woman move all of her belongings out of her home and into the 4H building for an auction. Politically, socially, environmentally or one person at a time, how will you give back to society? Day in and day out many citizens change the world, or they do just the opposite and make the world a worse place than when they woke up. The article I chose to review is, “Community Service” written by Robert Coles. The article tells a story of college students who make a difference in the world through peer tutoring, an act of community service, and have such an impact that they act as role models for Coles and he begins to do the same. Briefly in the beginning of the article, Coles states that, “students are likely to express their lofty political and social impulses and practical desires to change the world through community service, even if in limited or modest ways.”(Robert Coles, pg.93) We must make an ultimate decision about the world we live in, will we choose to make a difference in the lives of fellow citizens or discriminate and punish not only them but ourselves by not sharing the knowledge we have been taught.

One deciding to serve their surrounding community in an attempt to better the lives of people living in that community is one of the most selfless actions one individual person can perform. Throughout my time in high school career I committed myself to serving the broader community in order to better society whether it be me serving as Co-President of Life is Delicious or raising money for Special Olympics Connecticut by doing the Penguin Plunge.

Service in the school and community is an insight to your character and work ethic. I have over 20 hours of community service from many different experiences. Last summer I worked for Camp Barakel, a summer camp, in the kitchen. I assisted in serving food and cleaning. I learned discipline and teamwork through this valuable experience. Not only this I’ve worked with the Elderly in Rehabilitation centers and the patience and nurturing qualities is something that will forever be valuable in my life. At a young age I discovered a passion for helping others and I have continued to be passionate about serving my community since then. At the age of eight years old I began the first year of what would soon be my ten year membership of 4-H. Through that program and my church’s youth group I truly began to understand what selfless service was all about. I first began helping others by walking dogs at the local shelter and helping my 4-H club clean the sides of the highways. I later was able to experience several mission trips that opened my eyes to the larger aspect of service. From being active in my community I have learned that after giving, you receive the best feeling. My freshman year, my friends and I dressed up like Disney princesses and sang at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Columbia, Missouri. I have gone back two more times because I am in love with cheering people up. Since this experience, I have made it a mission to always continue to participate in community service. From meals-on-wheels, to adopt-a-spot trash clean up I am always ready to help out the community.

Community service has been part of my high school experience from the start of my junior year. Helping people had always been my passion. Although I was constantly assisting my peers with minor situations in school it wasn't until later that I had my very first eye opener on what I can truly accomplish. Chick-fil-a Leadership Academy helped me recognize how big of an impact I have on the community by giving me life lessons. When I pondered about community service before Chick-fil-a Leadership Academy it revolved around my local community, however after the completion of the Kick-Off Ceremony my point of view of the community included every person that I could help even if they are half way around the world. During the Kick-Off Ceremony I was able to assist packing over 1 million meals for children in need with the continuous effort of other members. This resulted in the realization that food is something thousands of people take for granted.

I knew what helping the community looked like especially since I had to do community service to graduate high school. Most of my community service house came from going on a mission trip with my church to a different state. When on this trip we would build a church for a week, but the people that went on this trip were all people that I knew. The only people I didn’t know were the people that we would stay with. Since I have been on these trips since I was about eight, I have been able to take on more responsibilities and become more of a leader on the job site to the younger kids. This has transitioned over to my sports and classroom here at Bridgewater. I have been able to become a better leader both on and off the field in sports and also to organize study sessions for

Winston Churchill’s quote "We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give" embodies what community service is really about. Over the years I have had the pleasure of working for several organization and volunteering in a variety of different areas. There has been a community service experience that changed my life tremendously though. From 2009 until 2014 I had the amazing opportunity to work for the Nash-Edgecombe County Teen Court Program and doing so profoundly shaped my future.
