Personal Narrative: Entering A Liberal Arts College

Entering a Liberal Arts College I knew was different than that of other colleges, but I didn’t fully understand the difference. My mom attended BC, so I knew that there was going to be a lot of classes I needed to take that would not involve my major. This was scary entering college because I didn’t know what to expect in these classes since they weren’t my strong point. According to the Bridgewater website about Academic Citizenship as a student I am supposed to, “Through the Academic Citizenship program, BC is increasing conversations about a wide variety of issues. Engage in your education. Take advantage of an academic community filled with different perspectives. And prepare to be a better citizen of the global community”. I knew what helping the community looked like especially since I had to do community service to graduate high school. Most of my community service house came from going on a mission trip with my church to a different state. When on this trip we would build a church for a week, but the people that went on this trip were all people that I knew. The only people I didn’t know were the people that we would stay with. Since I have been on these trips since I was about eight, I have been able to take on more responsibilities and become more of a leader on the job site to the younger kids. This has transitioned over to my sports and classroom here at Bridgewater. At BC I was blessed with a coach that belonged to a church that needed help setting up prior to the services on Sunday. To help out with this work he would take a group of players each month to set up. This allowed me to grow with my teammates, but also to meet new people. Also during my freshman year I was able to help the community in a way I never had before. I was told about helping at the concession stand at the local Bridgewater baseball fields. I knew this was beneficial because it would give the parents a chance to watch their kids without worrying about the concession stand. I was also able to meet new people and see the community that I was new too.
These examples are a few of the ways that Bridgewater has prepared me for the community. BC has prepared me for both the academic part and the community part. The academic part was because I was able to learn about the world today so that I can be a better member. It also has showed me how to give back to the community through my service which is hard to find these
