Edward Carson was a determined Irish unionist leader who helped to raise the political tensions in Ireland that had led to the brink of a civil conflict . He was also a well-known politician and lawyer who was known to be the “uncrowned king of Ulster” who triumphantly led Ulster’s unionist resistance to the British government’s efforts to propose ‘Home Rule’ for Ireland . He was born in Harcourt Street, Dublin, on February 9, 1845 to a Protestant, middle-class family in southern Ireland . In 1887 Carson found himself politically involved and under threat of assassination. During the Plan of Campaign Carson was nicknamed ‘Coercion Carson’ . He considered that he was acting quite justly in prosecuting tenants who revolted against their landlords or refused to pay rent . He argued that the only way to pacify those who challenged Irish landlordism was to enforce ‘twenty years of resolute government’ . In fact, he was trying to introduce a kind of police state. In 1889 Carson became the youngest Queen’s Counsel in Ireland . He was a senior member of the bar and for the next three years worked at ordinary civil law cases. On July 1 1892, Balfour decided to make him Solicitor-General for Ireland. Carson represented Dublin University as a Liberal Unionist MP between 1892 and 1918 . In parliament his speech attacking the Second Home Rule Bill in 1893 was highly acclaimed . Carson relocated his legal practice to London in 1893, and promptly built up a reputation in the courts and in the House of Commons. William Allen, James Allen’s father set off for America to find a job and sent his family his income (An Unrewarded Genius). Then things took a brutal twist as William was robbed and eventually murdered before he could even settle down. In result of this, James Allen had to drop out of all schooling at an age of fifteen to help support his family (An Unrewarded Genius). He worked three short years until he decided to devote his life to literature (Plantinga). Before his literary career was cut short due to death, he wrote nineteen books within a nine year period. His most known quote was and still is “If your real desire is to do good, there is no need to wait for money before you do it,” which is how he lived his own life.
Sterling Allen Brown was born on May 1, 1901 in Washington, DC. He is the sixth child of Adelaide Allen and her husband Sterling Nelson Brown. He graduated as the valedictorian from Dunbar High School in 1918. Growing up, he followed the footsteps of his father which led him to attending Williams College on a scholarship where he studied French and English literature and graduated cum laude with a Phi Beta Kappa award in 1922. Also, he won the graves prize for an essay on Moliere and Shakespeare. As he continued on his academic journey he attended Harvard University where he received his master’s degree in English. As a professor, Brown taught at Virginia Seminary in Lynchburg, Lincoln University in Missouri and Fisk University in Nashville.

Edward Weston was born during the spring of March 24, 1886, in Highland Park, Illinois. He was the only son out of the two kids. His older sister, Mary, who was nine years older than him ended up being his mother figure after their mother, Alice Jeanette Brett, died when he was just 5 years old. He would call her “May” or “Maize” and they were very close to each other and it was one of the most important relationships in Edward Weston’s life. In the Essay by Nicholas Carr, he discusses whether Google is an impediment on our society or not. From Carr’s perspective Google is representing technology as a whole. He argues that it is handicapping us by causing individuals to stray away from doing their own research. There are many different ways this argument could be gone about and everyone is entitled to their opinion, therefore in my opinion I disagree with Carr. I do not believe that the advancements in technology is making us lazy as a nation. Growing up in Atlanta comes with many perks. You are given the experience of always having something to do, it is the one of the leading cities for young businessmen and women, and you are always up to date on the new societal trends. I love everything about living in Atlanta, I could not imagine living anywhere else. Along with the amazing aspects in regards to this city, there are also downfalls about living in such an overly-populated area. There are currently over five million people living in the Atlanta metropolitan area.

Growing up Carson lived in the projects of Detroit, making it hard for any young boy to make a good life for himself. At the age of eight his parents divorced due to his father having an affair. Ben and his older brother, Curtis, would solely be raised by their mother from then on. Their mother would sometimes work three jobs at a time to try and make ends meet for her two boys. Carson Pue offers several factors for fear, it comes from other issues we are dealing with and at times it is initiated by the enemy. I think that both elements provide insight into understanding how Christian leaders face fear. Unfortunately, we are influenced by our western world view, which measures everything. Anything that is not successful is by default failure. And this is the greatest fear of all for Christian leaders; that we will fail. We have taken the call of God and made it measurable. We are either successful or failures in ministry based on our own evaluation. And the devil is not hesitant capitalizes on the fear and use it against us.
