ffects of Concussions on Long Term Brain Usage
Concussions are the most common injury in all sports and can cause more damage than any other injury. That may sound a bit dramatic but it is the truth. A concussion is a traumatic brain injury that affects your brain function. Effects are usually temporary but can include headaches and problems with concentration, memory, balance and coordination. Concussions are caused by a blow to the head, violent shaking of the head, or other parts of the body. If not treated properly, long-term memory begins to fade away and people become more forgetful. That is just the start of it. However most concussion cases have a full recovery and minimum side-effects. Unfortunately some people get more concussions after another and they end up damaging the very thing that provides functions for the body. The biggest thing about treating a concussion is do not engage in any activity that could potentially damage the brain and make the concussion worse than it already is. It is also noted that brain cells are killed rapidly every time someone takes a concussive blow to the head and that’s why it is important to be extra protective of the head. That means no intake of alcohol or tobacco because of the “buzz” it provides which makes even a headache worse than it should, and on top of

Concussions also lead to affecting personalities and personal relationships, which is an explanation of why victims seem grouchy and irritable. It is difficult to fix the problems in the personality because every day decision making is heavily limited while the brain tries to rebuild. Some people are slow when it comes to decision making or other aspects of life, and it’s caused by brain injury at an earlier stage in life. However, with proper treatment for the concussion, the victim will pull through with little to no side
Concussions can truly mess with an athlete’s brain and can give him or her lifelong troubles.
(Haas) Another way concussions affect your friends is by giving them permanent brain damage. If one person receives a concussion and does not let it properly rest, they are susceptible to severe brain damage with another concussion. In fact, concussions are a leading cause for disabilities for humans under the age of 44? (DoSomething.Org) From experiments, one website has found that there is weird brain wave actions and incorrect use of the motor pathways, leading to attention loss, if you have concussions. (Nordqvist) Also they have found that concussions cause people to have symptoms that are very alike to Parkinson’s disease. (Nordqvist) With these facts and the effects of concussions, you know can see the impact that concussions put on other people.
It wasn’t until Dr. McKee and other researchers presented evidence of CTE in football players during a congressional hearing with the U.S. House of Representatives, in 2009, that the NFL changed its approach to addressing these findings. Later that year, during an interview with The New York Times, NFL Spokesman Greg Aiello stated “it’s quite obvious from the medical research that’s been done that concussion can lead to long-term problems.” This was one of the first times the league admitted that concussions and brain injuries had long-term impact on players. Admitting that there was a problem was one of the first steps in overhauling their approach to CTE’s impact on football players. Towards the end of that year, there was a shake up
In the U.S. alone, athletes suffer from roughly 300,000 concussions per year; 3,800,000 concussions were reported in 2012, which is double of what was reported in 2002. A concussion may be defined as a type of traumatic brain injury—or TBI—caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or by a hit to the body that causes the head and brain to move rapidly back and forth. This sudden movement can cause the brain to bounce around or twist in the skull, stretching and damaging the brain cells and creating chemical changes in the brain. Concussions are not usually considered life-threatening, but they may result in effects to the brain that may lead to devastating outcomes. Concussions are serious injuries that need to be taken seriously because of their severity and the serious health disorders that may arise.
Those impacts are not good either. Long lasting concussions don't even have to be caused by multiple bangs to the head. As little as a minor bump can cause these consequences. Some of the long term effects are behavioral and mood changes, cognitive difficulties, affected attention and judgement. Long term effects can also happen from the athlete neglecting the injury, which happens often in sports, because people think of it as just a small accident, then return to playing. Sometimes, people don't realize they have a concussion, because not everyone loses consciousness when receiving one. After facing head trauma, athletes can get a post-concussion syndrome, which causes headaches, dizziness, irritability, and depression. The long term effects of a concussion can last for thirty years or longer, which is why these head injuries should be taken
Although concussions are very serious, if the athlete allows an appropriate amount of time and does not come back prematurely then they will be okay (Excerpt 3). Often times, coaches and players don't pay much attention to a huge collision especially in the sport of football because it's not uncommon. Concussions can sometimes slip through and are defined as "invisible" (Excerpt 2). The effects of repeated concussions can be cumulative, and the brain is very vulnerable after injury (Excerpt 3). High school athletes have a higher chance of being concussed again if they have already been concussed once before. Sometimes a player's will comes into play when suffering an injury. Players often play down an injury but with something as serious as concussion, it can be very difficult to do this. There are laws that have to be followed when a player possibly has a concussion and it all depends if there is a medical professional field-side. As long as enough time is allowed for a player to come back, then there should be no problems with suffering a concussion as long as they handled it
Studies show that retired professional football players showed a three-fold increase in depression in players with a history of three or more concussions (Cifu). Evidence has also been gleaned from other sports that involve head impact. Nonrandomized studies of soccer players who have had multiple minor concussions have demonstrated that these individuals performed worse on neuropsychological tests compared with a control group (Neuropsychological testing is the standard for monitoring cognitive recovery after a concussion) (Cifu).
Concussions are a very frightening and dangerous injury. A concussion is a traumatic brain injury in which your brain rattles around in your skull. When you sustain a concussion, your brain may jolt as a result from the impact. This form of brain injury can cause bruising, damage to the blood vessels, and injury to the nerves. Concussions are the most common brain injury. Although concussions are the least serious, they should not be taken lightly. Back in the day, people were unaware of concussions and the symptoms associated with them. As a result, people today especially former athletes are dying from past concussions. (Cantu, R. & Hyman M., 2012) Many people have seen, heard of, or had a concussion and they are relevant to everyone’s life.
According to an excerpt from "Virginia Board Of Education Guidelines for Polices on Concussions in Student Athletes", a concussion is a brain injury that occurs when someone receives any type of hit that results in the sudden jarring of the head. One concussion may result in headaches, dizziness, nausea, loss of consciousness, mood swings, and depression. These effects may last from a few hours to thirty years. In addition to short term effects that usually occur with any head trauma, long term effects are always possibility as well. Some long term effects include behavioral changes, slowing of movements, and an increased possibility of suicide. These debilitating symptoms can persist long after the impact and lesson someone's quality of life. With a proper evaluation and the necessary recovery time though, these symptoms can be extinguished.
Concussions are a very big health problem in sports in the modern era and is now being noticed all over the world. Concussions were previously known to not carry any serious impact later in life. Players who have played pro or college level sports for long periods of time
In recent years concussions have become more and more of a topic due to their effects on the people who receives them. Concussions can cause a multitude of problems for a person later in their life whether they suffered from a major concussion or just a minor concussion. These problems can occur if a person ended up with multiple concussions over a lifetime or if they only have had one single concussion The problems a person can encounter are all somewhat connected but very diverse at the same time. Most of the problems a person will encounter will be due to a change in that person's brain but they can range from simple memory problems to suicidal problems.
However, after years of research and experimenting scientist are starting to untie the blindfold that football coaches and analysts have tied around the eyes of society to hide the true damage of concussions. Part of the reason concussions are not taken seriously is because on television no one ever bothers to explain what is truly happening inside the brain of a concussed person, the injury is just said to be a hit or blow to the head. Yet, what most people do not know is a concussion is actually when the brain is offset which causes the chemical balance in the brain to fluctuate and damage/kill brain cells. In their article, “Concussions and Repercussions”, Donald Redelmeier and Sheharyar Raza discuss the long term effects of only one concussion. They express that one concussion “can damage hundreds of neurons and millions of synapses, thereby contributing to subsequent depression, irritability, impulsivity, or suicidal ideation”(Redelmeier and Raza par 1). Neurons and synapses are vitally important to the function of not only the brain but the entire human body as well. Neurons act as the messenger of the brain by
`Concussions one of the most frequent injuries sweeping the country. Some may be asking how do concussions occur? Concussions occur when the brain moves in the skull. Causing it to bouncing off the skull. The sport football or rugby have a lot of concussions occurring in the sports. Somebody might be asking is there a way to prevent concussions from happening? The answer is no not yet. Virginia Tech is working on a football helmet to prevail concussions. Yay no more concussions, wrong there are still risks that may cause concussions. The concussion that can be sometimes fatal are just part of sports. In the end nothing can stop concussions from happening.
During the past few years, concussion has led to many suicides and suicide attempts due to confusion, lack of coordination, headaches, memory loss, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, ringing in ears, depression, excessive fatigue, and sleepiness which could lead to hallucinations, and make the person mad easily due to not
Concussion can also lead to family member’s not understanding what is happening, but they are observing the mood swings, depression, and withdrawal. All the symptoms that come with post-concussion syndrome can cause serious damage to a relationship. Distance and communicating
