In order to work effectively and appropriately with vulnerable and marginalised groups in society such as individuals with mental illnesses, it is fundamental for a social worker to have a comprehensive knowledge base and proficient skills.

Social work professions need to understand the importance of how individuals interact both with other people and their environment, to have an understanding how individuals are affected by these interactions (Rogers, p. 2). According to Rogers (2016), “Social workers are knowledgeable about human behavior across the life course; the range of social systems in which people live; and the ways social systems promote or deter people in maintaining or achieving health and well-being. Social workers apply theories and knowledge from the liberal arts to understand biological, social, cultural, psychological, and spiritual development (p. 2). Their work with clients begins with assessments to evaluations of intervention and is based in and supports of the core value system of the profession.

What does it take to be a social worker? As a social worker there are all kinds of peolle that you will be working with and different settings. Depending on the setting, you are working with all different kinds of people who are all going through their own crisis and dilemmas. The population that social workers work with is a very vulnerable population.

The skills a competent social worker need are active listening, empathy, leadership, communication skills, assessment, engagement, policy practice, etc.

Every piece is important ranging from how they got here to what they know about their conditions and the resources they have available to them. The social worker must be culturally competent and understand at least the basics of their background, cultural, beliefs, values, and religion. This will greatly help the worker find the right interventions and resources to solve problems they are facing. Born May 18, 1915, Elman Rodgers Service is an American anthropologist theorist who created the typology now used to categorize Bands, Tribes, Chiefdoms, and States as societies. Elman Services’ classifications displays the social evolution of societies and are now the four levels of political organization. Service created seven characteristics in part with his four classifications of societies. Three of his characteristics are social structure, political system, and subsistence strategy.
