The skills I identify with in my practice are; empathy, identifying strengths, and respect. These skill sets are vitally important to ensure clients receive the best possible outcome.
Social work professions need to understand the importance of how individuals interact both with other people and their environment, to have an understanding how individuals are affected by these interactions (Rogers, p. 2). According to Rogers (2016), “Social workers are knowledgeable about human behavior across the life course; the range of social systems in which people live; and the ways social systems promote or deter people in maintaining or achieving health and well-being. For example, clinical social psychologists must have "thick skin" (Lassiter, "Careers in Social Work"). This means that a social psychologist must be able to cope with stressful times when "happy endings seem unlikely" (Lassiter, "Careers in Social Work"). In addition, social psychologists must have good critical thinking skills (Lassiter, "Careers in Social Work"), which includes being able to assess problems and find a solution (Berzoff). According to Chad D. Lassiter, "having a knowledge of human development" benefits a social worker because it allows him to know when someone is exhibiting symptoms of "depression and post-traumatic disorders". Lassiter also says that possessing a "social work background" is also helpful for social workers because it allows social workers to aid people who are vulnerable to certain situations. But where could a social psychologist get all this experience? Experience is mainly earned from practicing communicating with a person who is filled with intolerable emotions and a state of bewilderment (Berzoff). It could also be practiced through relationships with professionals. Not only do social psychologists have to obtain communication skills, they must also be able to create relationships, instead of making the client having to make that relationship for their social psychologist (Berzoff). According to Reamer, social workers must
