There are over 320 million people in the U.S. and 42 million of them struggle of constipation (Epidemiology para. 2). This means that 13% of the American population have a little trouble going to the bathroom. Constipation is having less than normal, painful,or hard to pass. This unfortunate condition leads to 2.5 physician visits each year in the United States for constipation care and evaluation for constipation has been reported cost an average of $2,752 (Higgins para. 1). Bad habits such as eating unhealthy and being inactive are a couple of the many causes of unhealthy digestive health in Americans.

However, doing so will cause the individual to have no urge to defecate the will be no pressure wave to enhance evacuation which will eventually lead to constipation.
The food habits of Americans play a big role constipation. The American diet consists of white bread, dairy, red meat, fried foods, processed foods, etc. These foods also happen to be food that aid in constipation. According to United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the average Americans ate 586 pounds of milk and dairy products, 394 pounds of vegetables,
199 pounds of meat, 193 pounds of products containing flour and cereal, and 121 pounds of fresh fruit a year (What Americans para. 2). Due to the highfat and lowfiber content, dairy products cause constipation. Dairy makes up most of the American diet. In my family we eat cereal with milk every morning. Then throughout the day we eat other dairy products such as yogurt and cheese. Finally we end the day with ice cream after dinner. I asked a few of my classmates and they reported that their diet was similar to mine. It is important to change this habit to reduce the rate of constipation in America. Red meat is also very a big part of the American diet as it is consumed almost everyday. The traditional American diet was simple, it was homemade, it was composed primarily of minimally refined ingredients, it was low in added sugars and fats, with the fats coming primarily from animal sources, and required effort to produce, by comparison, the contemporary American diet is much more diverse it's composed a lot of “palatable” sometimes artificial materials, its commercially engineered and sold, it's composed of refined ingredients, it's high in added sugars and fats with the fat coming primarily from seed oils, and requires minimal effort to procure(Pillsbury). At the same time as modern medicine is conquered the leading killers of the 19 century such as infectious diseases modern culture has created a whole new set of epidemics that we must now cure.
This article was to examine how the US government uses dietary guidelines for Americans and how the guidelines were supposed to help us eat and stay healthy. Diet and chronic diseases are sometimes connected. For example, it is proven that nutrient deficiency disease like scurvy can be cured by consuming the lost nutrients. However, it is also shown that some nutrient exposure can cause chronic illness such as energy, fats, sodium dietary fiber, and food exposures, etc. making it difficult to set dietary guidelines. In addition to some nutrient causing chronic diseases, nondietary factors such as stress, lack of exercise, smoking and other environmental factors are linked to causing chronic illnesses (Slavin, 2012).
Most Americans do not care enough to take a look at the nutritional values of the food that he or she is consuming. That is why America has the highest percentage of obesity in the world. This is a serious problem because one in every three adults is obese, and one in every six children is obese. Much like pollution, the major food companies are treating America to unhealthy products that can cause physically damage to the human body. From motivational competition to company rivals, people aspire for greatness, to be the best at what they do. Some people desire to be the best will even go to drastic measures to get what they want. Companies like General Mills and Procter & Gamble, Coca-Cola, Nestle, Kraft, and Nabisco have more than their friendly share of competition, some could even say that they are fighting for the monopoly of the food industry.

On average, Americans eat 2,000 pounds of food every year, each. The question posed by the scientists of the study I read about was: “Why Americans Eat What They Do: Taste, Nutrition, Cost, Convenience, and Weight Control Concerns as Influences on Food Consumption?” I chose this study because I was/am interested in why Americans eat what they do. Unfortunately, I could not find a popular account linked to this scientific study, so this is purely based off of the study.
Introduction; Chronic constipation is an annoying common bowel problem which has significant impact on health expenses and quality of life. Up to 50% of chronic constipation patients are outlet dysfunction type constipation, which divided in to structural and functional causes. Functional defecation disorders include dyssynergic defecation (paradoxical contraction or failure to relax the pelvic floor and anal muscles during defecation). Patients with dyssynergic defecation are often unresponsive to common conservative medical treatment, and surgical methods has poor benefit and can be lead to anal incontinence. Therefore, behavioral treatment such as biofeedback therapy is the best choice for this functional disability.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between bowel habits and toilet training of developmentally normal children in rural and urban areas in the province of Singh, Pakistan. This cross-section study involved a questionnaire completed by the parents of 1000 children between the ages of 5 and 8 years old. A constipation score for each child was developed using the modified Rome III criteria. The researchers found that functional constipation was more frequent in rural areas. Children in urban areas began and completed toilet training significantly earlier than children in rural areas.
Incontinence, the involuntary release of one’s bowels – whether urinary or fecal – has detrimental effects on relationships. Many people who suffer from it find it difficult to lead normal lives because interacting with friends and family is hard as there is a negative stigma attached to the idea of not being able to control one’s bowels. But as people age, they are more likely to experience incontinence, which leads to an increased number of older people who choose to isolate themselves.
