Media Bias and its effects on society Media includes news outlets, print news, and social networks such as Facebook. Media can be a useful tool for society, allowing everyone to keep in touch with what is happening around them and working almost as an educator for everyday people. This being said media is also misused; the media is inaccurate, biased and potentially dangerous. To counter the problem regulations should be in place along with balanced and fair reporting. Media can be misused. Media has the power to influence society, from what people wear to what they believe. Media shows society how to dress, act, and look. Media has to power to reinforce bias within society by the stories they report, and how they word them. Wording effects the way people look at things. Studies have shown that even when someone watches an event happen, when asked questions about the event many people answered with false answers based on the questions wording. For example, after watching a car wreck people were asked a series of questions, even though the wreck was minor when asked if any glass was on the ground people answered yes (McLeod). Regulations should not be in place to control media but to ensure that what the media reports is real and unbiased. The media should be in place to inform and educate the people not to scare or give society bias. Regulations such as mandatory fact checking and education of media producers and journalist should be in place to insure accurate news. Regulations are already in place in the United states. “The U.S. media today is frequently known as the Fourth Estate, an appellation that suggests the press shares equal stature with the other branches of government created by the Constitution (US Embassy)”. While these regulations are in place, they are only suggestions as to what the media should be doing. Balanced and fair reporting would counter act the media bias problem. One technique already used on some talk shows around the world. The ‘round table’ approach, having different people with different opinions arguing their side, making for a balanced report and allowing the public to make their own opinions based on the well-rounded information provided (Boundless). Making the majority of news do the round table method would let society make their own decisions and allow for unbiased
