Pornography’s Effects on Human Society
Should pornography be banned? Pornography is easily obtained. If you have an internet connection, you will have some way to access to it. But should governments disallow pornographic images, whether it comes from websites, pictures, and movies? Some may agree or disagree. There are many reasons why it should be banned, rather than not. But what are some of these reasons? Does porn really devaluate society to a point where it causes sexual depression, and lack of motivation to obtain relationships, or judge on self image?
In today’s world, we have a great resource available, the internet. Internet could be used for everyday activities, work, and leisure. But there are many dangers of the internet. One of those dangers can be porn. Porn is easily accessible. According to the Covenant Eyes Internet accountability and filtering 2015 Porn statistics report, 30 percent of internet content is porn. Since 2015, there has been an estimated 2.2 billion searches for internet porn online. It shows that 20 percent of internet searches used with mobile phones are porn searches of some kind. It also states that 90 percent of boys were exposed to porn by the age of 18 which is rather young to be exposed to something as graphic as porn. Internet pornography can also be stumbled upon people who are much younger, say a 10 year old. 79% of youth exposure take place at home. As our younger generation is learning how technology works, there are more internet dangers.
These dangers that people are exposed to can have negative effects. The same source goes on to state that 56 percent of separations from a spouse was when they were actively invested in pornography. These effects can ruin families, relationships, friendships, etc. Men who are married who often watch or are involved in pornography tend to be more dissatisfied with the partners that they have and become distanced from them on an emotional level. The thing is a lot of these partners that they have may or may not even be aware that their husbands are viewing explicit material. But they do see a difference in their behavior. The viewing of porn can distracted the male partner from normal sexual relationships. Porn creates
It today’s society, pornography is a fast-growing epidemic that is evident in families, marriages, and teenage lifestyles. Supporters of pornography claim that it can be used as a tool to teach students about sex education. However, critics claim that pornography is unjust, influential, and dehumanizing. Pornography is unjust because it has the potential to break down intimate relationships and marriages. It can also have negative effects on children in particular young boys. More and more young boy’s minds are being influenced by pornography which is leading to misinterpretations about how to have a healthy sexual relationship. Most importantly, pornography dehumanizes women and it exploits children. Women and children are being victimized for the sheer pleasure of someone viewing pornography.
Another information I learned from organizations that want pornography to be abolished created porn addiction as a deterrent for online pornography viewing. They created these diseases as abstinence for sexual behaviors, which made abstinence even more
There have been many speculations about porn and its significance. Many would argue there is no sole purpose for it other then opening up doors for people to fantasize about things that generally do not happen in a normal sexual encounter. However, that is quite the contrary research has shown over the past decade that porn isn't entirely 100% bad. Although, there are negative connotations associated with porn especially for a female, researchers are finding that more
As a matter of fact, those individuals with damaging thoughts are the ones that watch and produce pornography. Additionally, “exposure to obscene material correlates with increased rapes, prostitution, child molestation, violent crime, the abuse of women, and sex addiction in men” (Hacker 5). Many of these correlations are a result of ideas that pornography planted in minds. Pornography alone does not cause people to commit a sexual crime, but it affects minds enough to influence people to act in an unethical way.
Boteach explains in the article “Take The Pledge” about how pornography ruined Mr. Weiner and Huma Abedin's relationship. Boteach from SIRS writes in the same article that porn addiction wreaks those closest to the addict and provides an example of how pornography destroyed Mr. Weiner and Huma Abedin’s relationship. This goes to show how bad pornography really is and how it has enough power to break up a marriage(Boteach #1). People should not be able to view pornography because people are putting their closest relationships at risk. Khadaroo describes how pornography leads to ending of relationships. “Health Crisis” by Khadaroo says “ One of the concerns the resolution cites, for instance, is that pornography is ‘linked to lessening desire in young men to marry, dissatisfaction in marriage, and infidelity’”(Khadaroo #4). This quote is saying pornography is not good for anyone or anyone's loved ones. Pornography should be banned from the views of everyone. Pornography splits and tears people from their family, friends, and that special someone. Pornagraphers are not only hurting themsleves but they are hurting the ones who care about and the ones that cares about them. Even though people want to ban pornography because it splits up relationships, everyone's first amendment gives you the right to view
What starts out as accidental exposure to sexual media can become a full-blown addiction (Kistler & Lee, 2010; Ouytsel, Ponnet, & Walrave, 2014). Early use of pornography is correlated with higher compulsivity as an emerging adult (Giordano, & Cashwell, 2017; Stinson, 2010; Willoughby, Carroll, Nelson, & Padilla-Walker, 2014; Willoughby, Young-Petersen, & Leonhardt, 2018; Ybarra & Mitchell, 2005). Virtually every individual who lives in modern society will be exposed to sexual media; even those who say they abstain still have a 20% likelihood of seeing pornography and sexual media incidentally (Willoughby, et al.,
For many years there has been a lot of arguments about the ethical and morality of pornography. pornography is defined as the depiction of erotic behavior intended to cause sexual excitement. When it coms down to pornography, people have different opinions about it. Some people might find it moral because it gives them pleasure and it satisfies them physically. some individuals see it as a form of art that describes the figure of a human body in an artistic form. Others see it as immoral because it harms and degrades an individual. Personally I believe that it all depends how pornography is conducted and how we respond to it. It can be morally healthy that we like it because it makes us happy, such as it helps with your marriage relationship in intimacy, and it can be immoral when it is used in an unhealthy that we do not like it because hurts an innocent person.
Ethics Pornography is a social problem and is a commodity brought into existence by certain characteristics of a highly developed civilization. The problem with pornography is that any form of censorship or downplay cannot solve it. It is difficult to draw the line between ones right to express their ideas and or opinions or sexuality
The Internet is a global network of vast information. With a few clicks, an individual can have access to up to 200 million web-sites filled with educational and recreational information. The Internet is not regulated in anyway (Carnegie Library 1). It is accessible throughout the entire world from the North to the South, to the early morning sunrise and dark sunsets. Different ethnicity and backgrounds come together linked upon this network resembling a connection of one body in unity. Sadly, issues arise creating concern for users, focusing particularly on minors. Pornography is one of the inappropriate materials on the Internet for minors. This material is harmful to young impressionable minds. Pornography is tearing and
Pornography has many obvious as well as not-so-obvious consequences within society. Pornography has the power to ruin marriages, destroy trust, excite a person to the point of sexual crime, or create an unhealthy view of human sexuality and the opposite sex.” (WowEssays, Pornography)
The Christian worldview is enforced by the Bible, which does not mention pornography because videography had yet to exist. However, the Bible does mention various forms of sin, prohibited sex and acts of the mind that would cause a person’s sexual immortality. Galatians 5 (NIV) states, “19 The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery… 21orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.” Based off scripture, humanity should not partake activities such as fornication, incest, adultery, orgies, and rape; all popular pornographic storylines. Watching pornographic videos could cause lust and sinful thoughts in. Lust is secular and will separate a person from God (1 John 2:26, NIV). Knowing this may influence a Christian to not indulge on pornography and actively seek counsel.
In recent years, pornography has established itself as perhaps the most controversial topic arising out of the use of the Internet. The easy availability of this type of sexually explicit material has caused a panic among government officials, family groups, religious groups and law enforcement bodies and this panic has been perpetuated in the media.
Pornography has had the stigma of being a subject whose name should never be spoken by any decent human being. Its bad reputation has made people feel so unsecure that they often deny partaking in watching from time to time. Porn was created as a form of entertainment to help with sexual arousal through various forms of media. Whether single, dating or married porn can bring many benefits to a person's sex life and overall health. To bring this point home, I will speak on how porn can liven up a married couples sex life, relieve stress and reduce sex crimes.
In order to understand the negative effects of pornography, the term itself must be properly defined. Britanica.com, one of the world’s oldest and highest rated encyclopedias, states that the word “pornography” can be derived from the Greek word porni graphein which means “any work of art or literature depicting the life of prostitutes.” (Jenkins, 2017) The modern-day English word, according to America’s number one dictionary Meriam-Webster, means “material (such as books or a photograph) that depicts erotic behavior and is intended to cause sexual excitement.” These definitions combined define pornography as any form of media that entertains its viewer with sexually arousing content.
First, we must identify exactly what the problem is with our language and use of the word “porn.” Out of curiosity, I decided in my research to search how many “porn sites” there were. What I found was car, food, make-up, word, poem, and truck porn…and a trip to the office to explain my searches. When I was explaining my somewhat convoluted thesis, I explained that when we accept food porn, we more or less celebrate our enjoyments labeling them as “porn”. By accepting porn and allowing people to believe it is normal, it could cause a higher demand for it, worsening the situation. Essentially porn isn’t a fulfilling as many may imagine. Many people that take part in the production of pornography are involved with drugs, surgeries, and abuse, just to construct a perfect sex scene in order to earn a profit. There is no real emotion in porn, so why are we associating porn with subjects that we show emotion towards? (Coppa)
