For the past couple of years, the number of school shootings has increased. In the aftermath of these tragedies, reporters often discover that the shooter was mentally ill. Many people believe that mental illness refers to severe diseases such as schizophrenia but it also includes depression, stress, and anxiety. As mass shootings become more commonplace in America, parents are concerned for their children’s safety at school. Within San Gabriel, some people say that Gabrielino High School does not have adequate support and help for mentally ill students. They claim that any help from Gabrielino would be useless and believe that it is not Gabrielino’s responsibility to provide help for these students. Other people believe that there are enough resources at Gabrielino to help mentally ill students as well as sufficient awareness about this help. Through the annual Club Faire and Gab week, these people state that students know that they can reach out and receive support. These statements are not completely true; Gabrielino does have sufficient resources for students with mental illness but students are not aware of this help.
Gabrielino High School has various programs that are able to support mentally ill students. The school is unable to help severe cases of mental illness such as bipolar disorder and schizophrenia because these diseases need treatment from psychiatrists. Despite this, Gabrielino
Since 2013 there have been 268 school shootings in the United States alone (Everytown for Gun Safety, 2017). School gun violence is becoming increasingly probable. It is imperative that our government and our citizens come together to create a solution and implement a plan to prevent and stop the occurrence of school gun violence. The solution, for some, is to bring more guns into the picture by arming teachers, principals, and other school officials, or place armed police officers at school sites (LaPierre, 2015). For others, the solution is to make even stricter laws regarding gun use or to get rid of these weapons altogether. These certainly are drastic options; I must say that I do believe the true solution is to increase the focus on mental health services and by extension, mental health awareness. There is simply not enough focus on the mental health of our youth and of our students. Mental health services are the most important step to making schools safer, because this solution touches the entire problem of violence at its root level.
Emotional wellness issues have been frequently shown another big cause of these shootings. Most school shooters were mentally sick or demonstrated side effects of psychological wellness issues. An opportunity for mental and psychiatric help could help stop these shootings. According to newyorker.com, ¨, from 2011 and 2013, more people believe that mass shootings result from a failure of the mental-health system than from easy access to guns. Eighty per cent of the population believes that mental illness is at least partially to
More than 270 gun sightings have been reported in schools in the year of 2016 (Mascia). Overall, more than fifty million kids walk into school with firearms everyday, but nobody knows about it. Why? Because most school officials do not have enough rights to search through students’ belongings if they have suspicion about something. Schools should have the right to search students’ belongings because of behavior, ownership, and safety.
In the course of proper identification, evaluation, and treatment, children and adolescents suffering with mental illness can conduct positive, normal lives. Nevertheless, the devastating majority of children with mental illnesses are unsuccessfully identified and the lack of treatment or support services have led to a subordinate worth of life and violence. The Mental Health Awareness and Improvement Act of 2013 (S. 689) is an inclusive bill proposed to address the extensive issue of mental health. By strongly considering the United States’ struggle against mental illness and school violence, as well as utilizing theoretical constructs to examine the Senate’s bill, a social worker can develop a more holistic perspective that can productively integrate practical insights reached from a variety of different points of view.
Gun violence is a crisis in the United States and it has now dominated national debate since the school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High in Parkland, Florida. A 19 year old killed 17 and injured 14 people at the school. The article, “No, there haven't been 18 school shootings in 2018. That number is flat wrong,” is by John Woodrow Cox and Steven Rich is published in the Washington Post on February 15, 2018. According to the article, Everytown for Gun Safety, a non-profit group, co- founded by Michael Bloomberg, defines a school shooting as “‘anytime a firearm discharges a live round inside a school building or on a school campus or grounds.”’ Yet the Gun Violence Archive defines school shootings as those that take place during school
Campuses across the United States continue to grow vulnerable every day. Since the Columbine Shooting in 1999, the nation has witnessed over two hundred and fifty shootings that were committed on a school campuses (Pearle, 2016). These shootings have been committed on school grounds, starting at the elementary level all the way through post graduate school. With the rise of social media and the internet; campus shootings have grained more attention nationally. In October 1990 Congress implemented the Gun Free School Zone Act (GFSZA); for public federally funded schools to create a barrier around designated school zones, to prevent gun related violence. The GFSZA designates a predetermined distance of 1,000 feet from school’s grounds as a gun free zone. This keeps a law-abiding citizen defenseless when entering a campus premises and allowing any potential criminal a safe-haven to commit a crime. Law abiding citizens should be allowed to concealed carry on school campuses because not only is it a Constitutional right, but it also
Since the Columbine High School shooting in 1999, there have been roughly 208 school shootings on school grounds. This series of shootings, especially after the attack in Parkland Florida, has created an outcry for stricter gun laws, higher purchasing ages and more background checks to try and make schools safer. One of the ideas on the table to reach this is to arm teachers and staff with firearms to ‘stop the threat before it happens’. But, this has received nothing but opposition from a majority of Americans, since the cost or properly arming a school is too great, arming teachers is an open invitation to unwarranted gun violence against minority students and teachers due to racial biases. The outcry of students, teachers and families is
School rampage shootings, also referred to as mass school shootings, involve one or a small number of perpetrators whose goal is to inflict as much harm as possible on as many people as possible within a school setting. It is a violent act. There is a distinction made between violence and aggression on the continuum of severity . As noted by Bushman and Huesmann (2010), while aggression is an intent to harm another person who does not want to be harmed, violence is aggression with the goal of extreme physical harm which would be severe injury or death. Using this frame of reference, mass shootings in schools are clearly acts of violence whereas school bullying, and depending on the context, school
After any mass murder incident, such as a school shooting, the public usually looks towards congress to pass legislation to prevent future incidents from occurring. This where the debate of gun control and effectiveness comes in to play. There was an article written, “Laws That Bit The Bullet: A Review of Legislative Responses to School Shootings”, the effectiveness of legislation passed in the United States in the aftermath of mass shooting events. “This paper examines the legislative responses of three school shootings— Westside Tech (Jonesboro, AR), Columbine High School (Littleton, CO), and Virginia Tech (Blacksburg, VA)” while giving a brief history of overall gun control legislation within the United States.
This paper will examine a juvenile school shooter that killed a teacher, the principal, and two students in their school. The school shooter has been tried in adult court and sentenced as an adult, due to the number of people killed the school shooter may be sentenced to capital punishment. This paper will provide an analysis of New York State laws regarding capital punishment of juveniles as well as risk factors including development risk factors that might have contributed to the actions of the school shooter. Further, recommended forensic risk assessment tools appropriate for this situation will be discussed as well as any ethical concerns that might impact this case based on personal biases leading to weaknesses with regard to effectively communicating result of the forensic assessments with the offender being sentenced to death. This paper will provide details on other states and their death penalty laws regarding juvenile offenders, the reason for this added information is that states laws pertaining to capital punishment vary. Lastly, this paper will provide preventative information for juveniles who intend to commit crimes such as this one and how to effectively assist a juvenile with feelings that relate to that of the school shooter.
School shootings have become an issue in recent years, wreaking havoc on young minds and ending lives. There are perfect solutions to this problem but getting rid of all of the weapons in the world is unrealistic. So the next best option is using an armed guard to protect the students and staff in schools. Armed guards are efficient in protecting everything they are used for so why not use them to protect the children and college students of America.
There are several approaches I could take on this situation. The situation that I’m talking about is the School shooting. Right now, I could be going off a rant about how there should be or should not be gun control. Honestly, if I was ranting about things, one would probably never listen. Once a wise man had told me to talk less and listen more. What I mean is we all well disagreed on issues, likewise towards this one.
The new form of terrorism is hitting home were kids are the schools i feel like there should be more security because of these breaches are devastating to the people in around the situation.the school shootings in American schools used to be rare and shocking. Now it happens all the time.Researchers and gun control people say that since 2013, they have school shootings at a rate of about one a week.By now nearly all schools have planned their response to school shootings In 2016, the rescuers found nearly 90% percent of public schools had a written plan for responding to school shootings and 70% percent of those schools had drilled students on the plan.Just focusing on school shootings that were actually carried out may miss the full picture.
It is without a doubt that there has been an increase in violent crimes in schools throughout recent years. School shootings continue to become more and more common, especially in North America. Safety concerns for any and all students and staff in schools are at all all time high due to the high number of fatal and non-fatal occurring incidences. Since 2013 to the present, it is estimated that the United States has seen approximately 205 school shootings. Weekly, that is a shocking one shooting on average. Many of these shootings have resulted in the injuries and deaths of multiple of students and staff members. (Everytown Research, 2017) Evidently, school shootings are tragic events that affect so many more people than just the victims. However, these events are also interesting to look at from the psychological and sociological point of views. Through much research, it can be concluded that school shootings are a complex problem that are caused by a mix of improper brain development and societal and media influences which motivate school shooters to emerge. Psychological factors may include struggling with mental illnesses and/or abuse that leads to damaged brain development. Additionally, being bullied and/or the role of the media are examples of sociological factors.
After written by Francine Prose is a dystopian novel about a nearby school shooting and the attempts to become a safer program and school to gain the result that students feel safer while gaining their education. Following the school shooting, a large amount of safety measurements and guidelines are enforced to prevent it from happening at Central High School. In 2013, Everytown which is a gun safety organization began tracking gunfire in schools and at college and universities — public reports that a firearm was discharged inside a school building or on school or campus grounds — and over the next three years identified 160 qualifying incidents. (Everytown) This is evidence which shows that this is still a social issue today. Not only is this social issue turned into a dystopian novel, but is also depicted in our real world society today as you can see the measures.
