The number of people suffering from secondhand smoke in UK and US has increased tremendously over the years. A lot of money which could have been used to start projects that will spearhead growth of the economy is being directed to treat these diseases. Majority of the affected population are young children. However, research has indicated that the largest number of these children emanates from family where none of the parent is a smoker. This is an indication that they inhale the cigarette smoke while on the streets and other public places such as restaurants (Sandford 2003). The government has a mandate of protecting its people. Young generation holds the future of these countries on their hands. As a result, every administration has a responsibility of protecting this generation. In an attempt to protect the whole population, these governments have come up with several measures that are aimed at reducing the exposure of the people to this kind of smoke (Callinan, Clarke & Kelleher 2010) The number of smokers in these countries is smaller compared to non-smokers. As a result, the governments are protecting the majority of the population through developing various strategies that will reduce the impact of cigarette smoke on the people.
The smokers should stay outside the homes, restaurants and shops until they finish their activities. Although this will viewed as a way of segregating the smokers from the
Tobacco has and still is the most important public health issue faced in Australia and internationally. (Jochelson, 2006). Many countries such as North America, England, Australia, Canada and Ireland have introduced policies regarding smoking in public areas and restriction of smoking in indoor areas. (Thomson, Wilson & Edwards, 2009). The government, community leaders and policy makers work towards introducing policies that will stop consumers from smoking in public areas. (Pizacani, maher, Rohde, Drach & Stark, 2012). Government intervention should extend public smoking bans so that second hand smokers can be safe, a better environment and less death incidents relating to smoking.
Cartmell et al. (2011) suggests that children are at the most risk for being exposed to second-hand smoke in their homes and in vehicles. Of the children exposed to passive smoke, the majority live in low socioeconomic households (Rowa-Dewar & Ritchie, 2014). Individuals of low socioeconomic status are more likely to smoke more cigarettes, are less likely to stop smoking, and are more apt to smoke in their homes and their cars with children being present (Rowa-Dewar & Ritchie, 2014). Al-Sayed & Ibrahim (2014) make it a point to mention that the amount of nicotine that children receive passively from parents who smoke is comparable to each child actually smoking roughly 60-150 cigarettes over a one year time-frame. The effects that smoking has on the health and well-being of individuals has been thoroughly researched and documented. Although this topic is of much importance, the effects of passive smoke on individuals, especially children, is a subject matter that deserves to be looked at closely. What are the effects of second-hand smoking on children? This paper will utilize evidence-based research to illustrate the various components of the effects that second-hand smoke has on the population of
Children 's lungs are still developing at young ages and adult’s occurs harmful effects on the heart. There are millions of children breathing smoke in their home with second hand smoke and second hand smokers don’t realize that their children are especially at more risk to their health than they are. Smoking in vehicles with under age of 18 should ban the law and children whose parents smoke around should also be illegal because in a small enclosed space such as a vehicle with a sunroof has more toxic air which expose breathing more rapidly. According to the author Leada Grove, created an article from AL.com wrote that “80 percent of smoke is invisivble and opening windows does not remove its harmful effects. The level of toxic air in a vehicle where someone is smoking is up to 10 times worse than levels that is considered hazardous”. Approximately 250,000 children and adults (non smokers) have died from health problems that exposed to secondhand smoke. Some states in the U.S. had established the secondhand smoke law that is illegal, however other states are still under construction to establish this law. All states should make this law a new law for all second hand smokers because as of right now our country have gained a major health issue and money wise for the government.
Every day in America families’ gathers together to celebrate special events or the accomplishments of one of its members. Many times these special moments can be ruined or brought to an abrupt end due to others nearby smoking. Public spaces should be safe and accessible to all members of society to use without the inconvenience of someone else’s smoking ruining their outing or causing health issues to flare up such as, asthma. People do have the right to choose to smoke if they desire, but nonsmokers have the right to go out to public places with their family and not be exposed to harmful secondhand smoke. Studies have shown that secondhand smoke is just as harmful as smoking and leads to a higher occurrence of cancer and heart disease. Furthermore,
Smoking has resulted in over 20 million deaths since 1964. About 443,000 people die every year from smoking related illnesses and for every dead person, there are 20 people who grapple with one or more tobacco-related illnesses. The United States loses 193 billion USD annually in medical expenses and lost productivity. 17% of high school seniors are smokers, and one fifth of adult Americans continue to smoke. This paper aims to highlight the specific actions that have been taken by public health officials in the past and the path of action projected for the next decade.
Smoking is one of the leading causes of preventable deaths in the world. Although this lifestyle practice usually warrants a person’s conscious choice to inhale toxic fumes, more than the sole individual are affected by this habit. Passive or involuntary smoking results when bystanders are collaterally forced to also breathe in a product containing at least 70 carcinogens and 7000 chemicals, as a consequence of another person’s smoking (American Cancer Society, 2015). Evidence suggests secondhand smoking (SHS) can lead to “lung, larynx, pharynx, nasal sinuses, brain, bladder, rectum, stomach, and breast cancers” in adults, even though they never smoked firsthand. Although the severity of health abnormalities and illnesses vary due to exposure, the gravity of the repercussions of SHS cannot remain disregarded. The American Cancer Society proposes that due to a child’s pivotal physical, mental, and emotional development, they are “most affected by SHS and least able to avoid it” (2015). In addition to the impediment of a child’s development, environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) is potentially linked to the development of “lymphoma, leukemia, liver cancer, brain tumors, asthma, infections, and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS)” (American Cancer Society, 2015). ETS is literally a grave dilemma plaguing nations.
Not only does secondhand smoke harm people physically, public smoking is an extremely negative influence for child development and the development of the world as a whole. Around six thousand students in the country of Africa were included in the Global Youth Tobacco Survey to get an overall understanding to how many non-smoking adolescents (11-18 yrs) are around the harsh chemicals of SHS. The survey concluded that 34.2% of the students were exposed to SHS outside of the home. The amount of students already affected with the health consequences of cigarette smoke is wistfully significant.
Apart from the child health care system itself, parents hold the key to all of the child's. Some parents may not know exactly how to care for their child in the most healthy way due to the fact that the parent has: bad habit, drug issues, and in some way abusive.
In conclusion it must be noted that although a law has been passed long ago that prohibits smoking in public places, enforcement has not achieved 100% due to the failure of both the public and the government which is mainly attributed to ignorance of the legislature. Extensive advertisement and heavy punishment could contribute to nicotine free atmosphere. Also studies involving estimation of levels of atmospheric nicotine must be encouraged and effective measures must be initiated to control nicotine use in different forms so as to avoid the health care costs associated with the resultant long term
Millions of Americans die every year from cigarette smoke, but not all of them are smokers. Conclusive information shows, “Since the 1964 Surgeon General’s Report, 2.5 million adults who were nonsmokers died because they breathed secondhand smoke” (“Health Effects”). These nonsmokers, who died from secondhand smoke related illnesses, were exposed to secondhand smoke throughout their lives in order for these illnesses to develop. Most adults who suffer from secondhand smoke related issues were raised in homes where their parents smoked, which left them to suffer in the deadly chemicals being vaporized within the air from the burning cigarettes. Parents are informed of the harm cigarettes cause to their own body, but they still continue to
By now it is known that smoking is harmful to your body. Everyone who smokes is completely aware of this and continues to mistreat their body anyway. It takes something serious for smokers to actually take the necessary steps to quit. I chose this ad on the internet because many people who I love dearly smoke. This advertisement was made by the Child Health Foundation. It was created in Germany and published in 2007. The author is trying to achieve awareness of the dangers of secondhand smoke to try and stop parents from smoking around their children or altogether. This advertisement can also affect children or anyone who smokes, whether they are a parent or not. When children understand this advertisement, it can lead them to pressure their parents to quit smoking. This may also target anyone who smokes in general because they will most likely be around a child at one time or another. The purpose of this advertisement is to show parents, kids, or anyone who smokes in general, that breathing in secondhand smoke can be deadly for infants and children. Smokers need to be mindful of
Children who obtain such diseases that inhale secondhand smoke have no choice in what is happening to them. American parents that smoke will endanger a child and the child will grow up with a life of hardships. The children of this country are being put at a great disadvantage, and the government is standing aside allowing adult to smoke near children. The United States of America, our government needs to take a firmer stand on the health of our children, and make smoking illegal in the presence of children. Children’s lungs are vulnerable to the effects of secondhand smoke and can cause serious problems down the road.
It is argued that the establishment of smoking and no-smoking areas is sufficient to overcome the problem of second-hand smoke. However, this is ultimately not the case. Imagine there are indeed separated smoking and non-smoking areas. The smoker and non-smoker are together and have to decide where to go. If accommodating smoking is the norm, the smoker can go away, opt for the non-smoking area or for the smoking area.
Tobacco users seem to forget that the actions don’t only affect them but also people around them. They might have decided that they don5t view the dangers of tobacco use as important but people around them that decided not to risk their lives are affected by their actions through secondhand smoking. Secondhand smoking is a threat to the public’s physical,
However, some people think that not allowing smoking in public places is like not allowing their freedom of choice. According to columnist Dan Hemp, “we have the choice of going to any public place where we feel comfortable” (Hemp). People have the choice for everything they want to do but sometimes people have to compromise at some point. Smokers have choices too, they can smoke if they want but if they try to avoid some public places for smoking then it can save hundreds of lives. Smokers can save the environment for kids and elders.
