Effects of Having a Cell Phone in Elementary School

Have you ever heard of the gruesome Columbine High School massacre? This incident occurred on April 20th 1999 and involved two students embarking on a shooting rampage, killing twelve students, a teacher and wounding twenty three others. Unfortunately during this incident, the school 's most easily accessible phone was on the complete other side of the school in the library. Perhaps some of these lives could have been saved if the students in this class had cell phones that they could 've used to contact the authorities more quickly. First of all, bullying has now become more popular online. This is called “cyberbullying”. Cellphones now make it easier to target the victim then before. Most victims of bullying are often getting cyberbullied as well. Victims of this behavior have a harder time of getting away from this. Cellphones are everywhere and anyone can get a hold of them.

Cyberbullying effects children and teens more and more these days with the increasing social media sites available today. An estimated half of all US teens are affected today by cyberbullying. Cyberbully is when individuals use technology to harass, embarrass or cause harm to another. It only considered to be cyberbullying when young people preform theses acts. When harassment or embarrassment performed by adults it is labeled as cyber harassment. Adults can be held to legal consequences, but if a juvenile does this they are not held to legal consequences. In this day of age it is common place to hear of children as young as 6 having cell phones. But what if that were to be changed, what if a minimum age requirement was to be placed on the use of cell phones. There are age requirement placed on many things already such as being able to sit in the front seat of the car, smoking, and drinking. These age requirement are placed on these because of safety reason and because people under the age many not be mature enough to handle them. With all of these kids texting inappropriate materials, bullying each other through text and not yet fully developing proper communication skills couldn’t we argue that it 's not safe and that these kids are perhaps not yet mature enough to contain that much responsibility to use this technology properly and safety in their hands to small for their phone.

We are in an era of ubiquitous social networking. Where adolescent cruelties can be far more lasting. All of which underlines a central question of our new digital age. Cell phones in school affects many peoples lives, such as facebook. The internet website Facebook is a main reason or cause for a lot of kids to get bullied by people they may not know, which can push people as far as death or severely hurting themselves.

And to be honest no-one gives kids any real description of what cyberbullying is or what it looks like, but we expect them to. Also we never talk about most of the symptoms of cyberbullying or the others effects it has on people. Next would come the the consequences of the cyberbullying later in their adolescent years were the pressure of living alone or being on your own sets in. Finally, no-one gives their children adequate tips or help when they are bullied online.

Cyberbullying is a form of bullying by using phones, computers, or other technology to threaten, harass, or even publically humiliate another person through messaging and in most cases, social media. No student would ever go to school without their phone in their hand or pocket, it is their way of connecting with the world and is used for research or to pass the time during breaks. Students in the 21st century use technology daily, especially when at school. This makes cyberbullying ubiquitous. ‘“Wherever kids go with their computers or phones, which is nearly everywhere, the bullies come with them’” (Bauman, Sheri). Phones are taken to school every day, so the bullying taking place at home through a technology device is being brought to school, making it a shared responsibility between parents and the school. “Peers in school are involved in most cyberbullying incidents”

The topic of contention here is whether or not mobile phones be allowed in school and I oppose the motion thereby stating that mobile phones should not be allowed in schools.

With the use of so many electronics and the need and use of social media. Cyber bullying has sky rocketed to the number one form of bullying ( Thompson & Cohen, 2014). In a quest to get tough on cyber bullying a number of schools around the world have begun to confiscate and inspect student’s electronic devices. In an attempt to help decrease the bullying. Cyber Bullying takes place 24 hours a day and 7 days a week ( Thompson & Cohen, 2014). With the suicide rate increasing the way it is due to the negative effects, many schools districts have adopted formal policies generally noted in student handbooks and online on the school websites which permits teachers and administrators to seize electronic communication devices and review their contents under certain situations. Clearly bullying is a problem regardless the age of the student and the type of school the student attends. It has a negative effect on the bully as well as the victim and it even impacts how children perform at school. The problem of bullying is so extensive it causes internal conflict for bystanders. Bullying is such a long-term cycle that it can influence the adult life which in turn perpetuates the cycle of abuse. Bullying is more prevalent among males than females and occurred with greater frequency among middle school youth than high school youth (Siris & Osterman, 2012). For males physical and verbal bullying were common and for female students verbal bullying and rumors were common.

Through the years, small devices such as phones, cameras, music players, and tablets have been appearing to make human life easier. The cellphone is one of those devices that every year presents drastic changes in the whole term of technology. Thus, these changes in cellphones have been transmitted in how the teachers are transmitting information and how students are behaving at class. Furthermore, cellphones are also creating a new environment in classrooms, more dynamic and more useful. According to Drury (2012), students can use their cellphones in class to a variety of tools such as taking pictures and notes, recording videos and sounds, and sharing some information by messages or texts (para. 3). Therefore, more of this factors that students can do in those days would not have been possible without the appearance of the cellphone. In spite of the fact that opponents believe that cellphones are working as distractors in classrooms, these devices are providing several advantages not only not only in classrooms but also in the entire world for students, teachers, and people.

It allows students to obtain answer to questions very quickly and easily but students,adults and even parents intend to get addicted on cell phones easily and it’s broadly proven.

In recent years, children have been increasingly given cell phones as a replacement for toys. Statistics show, “43 percent of children under 12 years old with access to a tablet at home use it to watch movies and television shows” (Kids Wireless Use Facts 2017). This statistic is consequently caused by parents frequently purchasing these devices for their children because technology has been growing as a huge part of people’s daily lives. What parents may not realize is what damaging content may appear on the advertisements and shows they watch on their mobile devices. The “APA and its Taskforce on Advertising and children” are trying to enforce the monitoring of children watching advertisements that could be toxic to their minds” (Dittman 2004). One doctor of the task force adds that “child-directed ads for healthy foods can lose their effectiveness when children view ads for snack foods in the same sitting.” (Dittmann 2004) APA psychologists also want to help the parents and their children get better strategies for children to view commercials since advertisements are an immense part of society. If parents are made aware of the negative effects technology has on children, then they will limit their screen time, have them participate in another creative activity, or become role models and not be constantly on their phones so that their children will not be at risk to obesity, cognitive malfunctions, and violence.

Cell phones can their disadvantages and advantages for a student to be able to use in a classroom.Also a cell phone can really help a student and can even help a student to improve in school.
