In Egyptian Mythology, Nekhbet was known as the White Vulture Goddess. She is often seen with her sister Wadjet, the Black Vulture Goddess. Together, they are known as “The Ladies.” Nekhbet was the protector of the pharaohs and was supposed to also keep an eye on royalty that hadn’t died yet. She also was the goddess of women in childbirth. Nekhbet was the protector of upper Egypt. Nekhbet was a vulture, which may seem weird because they are scavenger birds that eat roadkill, but Egyptians thought they were pure animals. The pharaohs saw vultures as excellent mothers, thought they were all females, and that they could have baby vultures without males.
