One example of an emancipative value at work in the film "Good Bye Lenin!" is seen in the young characters longing for individual autonomy. For example, Ariane is portrayed as a young woman who decides to change the course of her life immediately after the fall of communism. Instead of continuing her education in the field of economy, Ariane decides to stop attending school and takes a position at a fast food restaurant, which is likely caused by wanting to become financially independent. As the country's economic situation improved, many young people in Germany begun to place more emphasis on self-expression, which also resulted from having the autonomy over one's choices. This can be observed when Ariane changes her style of dress by starting to wear more revealing clothes and heavier makeup. Another example of self-expression at work is when Ariane and her boyfriend are shown to dress up and dance to Indian music.
Another example of an emancipative value is observed when we see the helicopter flying away with the statue of Lenin. It can be assumed from this scene that the statue of Lenin was a popular landmark during the socialist Germany as is symbolized the power of the communist regime. In my opinion, this scene has a symbolic meaning as it represents the German society's challenging the old authority and its desire for political freedom and democracy.
An example of a conservative value in the film can be observed in the behavior of one of Alex's older neighbors. Throughout the movie, he is shown to voice his negative opinions regarding the new political system and complaining about the massive loss of jobs that the working-class experienced as a result of the fall of communism. In the communistic society, most members are assigned some sort of a job or a role, and therefore it is difficult for the old neighbor to accept that now so many lost their employment.
Another conservative value at work in the film can also be observed in Alex's behavior. Although the character is shown to enjoy and even fight for the new political freedom, as the movie unfolds, it becomes clear that in his actions to protect his mother. Alex is also attempting to recreate an old sentiment and create a reality that he wishes
On the whole, does Goodbye, Lenin paint a positive or negative picture of life in communist East Germany?
Burgess does not characterize Alex as just a murderous rapist. To come to terms with his wife's death, he had to believe that it is inhuman to be totally good or totally evil (Burgess ix). In the final chapter, Alex undergoes a moral transformation; "he grows bored with violence and recognizes that human energy is better expended on creation than destruction" (vii). Burgess could not believe that the men who raped his wife were totally evil, so Alex had to redeem himself by living a normal life.
Lenin was able to consolidate Bolshevik rule in Russia by combining popular policies and repression: To what extent do you agree with this statement.
Set at the end of the Cold War in East Germany, the movie Goodbye Lenin is the story of a young man, Alex, trying to protect his mother, Christiane, who just spent the last eight months in a coma. Christiane is a personification of the values and ideology of socialism. She carries them out in her interactions with society, and is very hopeful towards the success of the regime. During her absence, the fall of the Berlin Wall and of the German Democratic Republic leads to a radical and turbulent change in society: the fall of socialism and the triumph of capitalism. Because of the shocking effect of such information and the danger of another heart attack, Alex creates for Christiane an ideological form of socialism. Fundamental themes in the movie are the difference between ideal and reality of socialism, as well as the positive and negative aspects of the transition to free market capitalism. Such themes are carried out through a juxtaposition of an ideal society and its reality in the form of a constructed reality of socialism. This idealized version of socialism served as an oasis from the chaotic transition from a problematic socialist regime to free market capitalism.
Alex matures and grows through his experiences in China and is now aware of the human consequences that war has. Alex’s growth and maturity is shown when his dad is captured by PLA. Proof of this is when Alex and his dad are talking over the two way radio before Ted gets captured. He is very concerned for his Dad at this point in the book. This event is the beginning of Alex’s awakening. This event hits Alex hard and makes him realize the reality behind war. Another event that helps Alex articulate his new vision of war is when he sees Lau Xu die right in front of his eyes. He even describes the details of the shooting when he says “Crack! Lau Xu spun around, his arms flung skyward. Before he fell the AK 47 spit flame again and the burst blew Lao xu off his feet” (Bell 114). Another example of Alex’s growth leading up to his epiphany of hating war is when Xin-hua gets shot. This happens when Alex starts to beg the officer to let her go and says” Please let me talk to your commanding officer. I just want to-...CRACK. The sound of a single gunshot. I turned to look into the trees where they had taken Xin-Hua. Oh God no, I moaned. No, No ,Nooooooo!” (Bell 183). Alex is now fully aware of the horrible consequences of war after witnessing the death of his friends and his father getting
Vladimir Lenin Vladimir Lenin was the Bolshevik leader. He was a clever thinker and a practical man; he knew how to take advantage of events. When Lenin arrived in Russia, he issued a document called the April theses, promising ‘peace, bread, land and freedom’. He called for an end to the ‘Capitalist’ war, and demanded that power should be given to the soviets.
The Life of Leon Trotsky Leon Trotsky is well recognised as one of the greatest Marxists that ever lived. After being arrested, sentenced to exile twice and supporting the Mensheviks, Trotsky was deported to New York Citywhere he was to be a peaceful, productive member of society. Following the removal of the Tsar during the Russian Revolution, Trotsky returned to Russia in May 1917. In August 1917, Trotsky joined the Central Committee of the Bolshevik party whose leader was none other than Vladimir Lenin.
The society than targets the emotional aspect of its residents as they are propelled into disregarding their emotions, feelings and sensitive side. The final sacrifice that the society compels people to make are at the moral front, when they are faced with situations with no other way out. Hence, the profoundly totalitarian system prevalent in the society pictured by the brilliant novelist is extremely dehumanizing on every level, be it physical, psychological or
Compare and contrast the ideologies and the political and economic practice of Lenin and Stalin.
When confronted by the idea of suffering, Lenina is only able to produce the single response of resorting to soma for happiness, while John who was raised outside of the World State embraces suffering as a part of being human, demonstrating how the World State has annihilated the people of the state’s ability to see things from other perspectives apart from the World State’s, resulting in a lack of individuality.
A quote by Valdimir Lenin states, “No revolution is worth anything unless it can defend itself.” We see this all the time in our world’s history, and in current situations across the globe. Groups of people whether they be leaders, dictators, soldiers, rulers, or even civilians are constantly trying to defend themselves in their acts of war. Many are taking actions to ensure that their reason is heard, because without it, the only thing they are doing is fighting for nothing. However, contrary to the statement by Lenin, I believe that if you wage a revolution for something, but have to constantly defend your actions to everyone as to why you’re not fallacious, your reason is not strong enough.
Through the theoretical approach of Marxism, The Beauty and The Beast (2017) is a Disney film that depicts the divide between class structures in a traditionally oriented society. Vladimir Lenin and Old Major both are two respected figures among their own kinds. They both have strong beliefs where everyone should be equal in all ways. In Lenin’s speech and Old Major’s speech in the book Animal Farm by George Orwell, they both state their beliefs of Communism and Animalism.
. . there's no law nor order no more" pg 14. He takes on a role of authority in a society of anarchy. Although he is impervious to the choice of good, Alex does not remain ignorant to this choice throughout the entire novel. In the beginning, he believes that violence is the only way to prove his control. This then leads to his loss of control through the loss of his ability of choice. Only in the very end Alex finally become a well-rounded character. He realizes that he does not have to choose evil and abuse his position to prove his right of choice. "But where I itty now, O my brothers, is all on my oddy knocky, where you cannot go. Tomorrow is all like sweet flowers? pg 148. Alex now knows that his future is open for his choices to lead him. For good or for evil, it is his right to decide, and this is what truly proves his freedom of choice.
