Emergency Nurse Career Research Paper

I am Amanda Selich, 27 years old, and have been living in San Francisco for roughly 10 years. I grew up in the East Bay with my 3 siblings and was raised by a single father. Much of my childhood was spent taking care of my younger siblings. This responsibility was so demanding I was forced to drop out of high school and become their “surrogate mother”. However at the age of 24 I was able to get my GED and finally attend college. In fact this past May I graduated from City College of San Francisco with highest honors in Science and Math.

The career that I plan on pursing would hands down have to be Certified Nursing Assistant. Some people may wonder why I decided to settle with this profession so I guess we’ll just have to take a walk down memory lane. Ever since I was a little girl I love watching nurses work. I never really realized how much I wanted to be a Certified Nursing Assistant until my grandmother took sick at home she had home aids come and see her routinely. I watched my grandmother struggle with her health issues and I also watched how caring and proficient the nurses were towards my grandmother. There are many different fields to choose from while working as a Registered Nurse. “Registered nurses work in hospitals, physicians' offices, home healthcare services, and nursing care facilities. Others work in correctional facilities, schools, or serve in the military.” (bls.gov). You can also specialize in a specific type of nursing by seeking employment in that individual line of work or by taking a certification test. “The Nursing2011 Salary Survey reports that nurses certified in a specialty earn an average of $10,200 per year more than nurses who are not.” (pncb.org). If you choose to go further with your education you can continue past a bachelor’s degree and get a master’s degree becoming a nurse practitioner.

The career I would like to pursue would be Ultrasonography. Ultrasonography is a diagnostic medical procedure that uses high frequency sound waves to see images of a patients internal organs, tissues and blood flow. I first became interested in this field when I became pregnant with my first child. I thought that the ability to see images on the inside of a person's body was very intriguing. I've had many ultrasounds in my lifetime and my favorite were always the ones where I got to see the development of my baby. To be able to see a human being before it's even born is one of the most phenomenal things you could ever imagine. To be an sonographer would be a very rewarding career in so many ways. I would be able to help my patients who were hurt or injured, yet I would also be able to show expecting parents there

Nursing is the most trusted and reliable profession leading in the transformation of healthcare. “Nursing helps to promote, protect, and optimization of health and abilities to prevention of illness and injury, facilitation of healing, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, groups, communities and populations” (American Nursing Association, 2017). Nursing offered careers for both men and women and it is the profession that provides healthcare everywhere. Society has great expectations for this profession. Caregivers are one the reasons why nursing is seen as the engine room of healthcare system. In the quest to provide preventive and restorative measures. There are three basic career guides which are; education, job opportunities, and salary.

My selected career would be an OB/GYN or something in the medical field. I am very interested in that career because it's inspiring how someone can have such a huge impact on people's lives. I became interested in being in the medical field at a very young age, and it is a huge goal of mine to stay true to my dream. From being at doctors offices and hospitals monthly and sometimes weekly when I was in elementary school, I am very used to being around doctors and medicine.

The career path I have chosen to take is in the medical field. My dream from a young age was always to be a nurse. A nurse is a healthcare professional who is focused on caring for people, and making sure that they manage, maintain, and recover patients to the finest state of health (What is Nursing, par.1). Nursing makes up a vast majority of the healthcare industry. There is a huge range of nursing specialties. Nurses work in General and surgical Hospitals, doctor’s offices, nursing care facilities, outpatient facilities, and home health services (Why Be a Nurse, par. 2). Nursing is an extremely flexible career, with one hundred and four specialties and a lot of advanced nursing degrees, so there is something for everyone in this field (Why Be a Nurse, par. 4). The career I am curious about is in the medical field, generally speaking, nursing. I have chosen to become a registered nurse because of its background, and how its characteristics require the use of creativity, problem-solving, social skills, and critical thinking. Registered nurses use various skills to diagnose and apply certain care methods to specific patients. I know that nurses aid patients with various illnesses, diseases, disabilities, and injuries. I love helping people and the feeling I receive when helping people. It would also be very motivating to learn and discover things about the human body and how to fix any problems involving it.

The proudest accomplishment in my educational career has been graduating with a college degree in a field I absolutely love. With all honesty, I cannot attest that I have always wanted to be a registered nurse. As my college transcripts reflect, I have taken a hodgepodge of classes in attempt to find something; anything I can be passionate about. I found that passion in my first nursing class, Introduction to Healthcare Careers, that I took at the community college. Initially, I planned on taking a few medical terminology and anatomy classes to assist me at work as a paralegal. At the time, I worked for an attorney who specialized in personal injury and medical malpractice law. I would work 40+hours a week at the law firm and nursing school/clinical hours were done on nights and weekends. I survived and graduated with my Associates degree in nursing.

Being a nurse will require authoritarian leadership when working in the emergency room. When you are an emergency room nurse you are sometimes put in urgent situations that will affect the outcome of a patient’s life. Being an ER nurse will require a particular person to step up to take the leadership role so that everyone can be on the same page when it comes to the patient care.

The perfect career for me is physical therapy. I have always been interested in how and why the body works the way it does. Physical therapy is all about helping people gain a better quality of life and I know I can assist with that. Because I am already extremely inquisitive about the human body, I think it seems fit for me to learn more about it and use my knowledge and skills as a physical therapist. I used to think that the profession of a doctor was perfect for me, but I am more interested in how exercises and stretches can relieve pain or increase range of motion for people who need it most. I like to work one-on-one with people so I can get to know them on a personal level and individually fit their needs with what I can do for them.

For my career job I would like to be a veterinarian. I have always loved animals, especially dogs. Also, this job would allow me to get to know a lot of different kinds of animals. I like helping animals, taking care of them, and playing with animals. And being a veterinarian, I would get to meet knew kinds of animals and have a good salary.

My top career choice is a neurologist. I have chosen this career because not only is it financially rewarding, I can help people live a better life like I always dreamed of doing as a kid. I want to be the person to be recognized for saving lives. I know that this job would be a lot of hard work, but I think all my time would be worth it saving lives. The brain has always fascinated me since I was little, I was always eager to learn more, and discover more things. I realize that this would be a challenge, but it is a challenge I am up for!
