Emerson And Growth

During the nineteenth century, American schools have caused a raise of differences towards the method of educating students. In his essay, “Education”, an influential American thinker and writer, Ralph Waldo Emerson recommends the parents to take in consideration for their children’s lives by creating a better teaching in which the students can learn/imply the basic fundamentals on their strive for success by doing it on their own. Emerson emphasizes his claim by encouraging a teaching method that children use their “naturel” by utilizing paradox, metaphors and analogy.

In this essay, Ralph Waldo Emerson describes his view of an ideal education. What are its defining characteristics?

1. The main theme of the piece “Self-Reliance” is that one should never conform to the way that society views that they should because in doing that, a person loses their individuality. Emerson believed that a person should, “Speak [their] latent conviction, and it shall be the universal sense,” meaning that if a person chooses to march to the beat of their own drum, then nobody can tell them their opinion is wrong because at least they are taking a chance and speaking their mind. Emerson’s definition of self-reliance is similar to the common use because both definitions discuss how one should take care of personal needs and be independent. This is important because it’s hard to really see a lot of growth within a time period. In the article, Carol also backs this up with evidence from a controlled experiment. The experiment was focused on the minds of seventh graders and talking to them in a certain way that influenced their mindsets. The seventh graders were split up into two groups and were to work on an eight-session workshop, however, the control group was taught about what a growth mindset is and how it can be applied into their school life. This factor leads to the control group having improved at the end of the semester. This experiment showed that just by knowing about what a growth mindset is and how it could be applied in life, people are more likely to grow more rapidly than people whose minds are fixed on having a limit to their knowledge or skills. This is important because the sooner that kids know how to make their brain think that there are endless possibilities to who they can be or what they can do, the more they are likely to excel in anything that they attempt, not only in school but in their own personal life. This will allow a person with a fixed mindset to be able to change their way of thinking and start to see more about what they can accomplish with their life.

Ralph Waldo Emerson said, "People seem not to see that their opinion of the world is also a confession of their character." This quote is a belief that your beliefs show innermost self. Emerson believes that your thoughts and ideas of the world reflect your true self. I agree that your mental outlook of the world is a representation of your real character. Regardless of whether or not you expressed those thoughts and ideas out loud, they still show your true colors. Opinions are just another way of showing the world who you really are. Your attitude on the certain topics and people, marks your stance on the world and show your true beliefs.

This also applys when we want to tryout for a sport. The high school softball team is having tryouts next week, the coach is looking to create a team that is willing to learn more than they already know, to try to help them grow together as a team. The high school senior does not like to learn new things, because she believes that she is the best. The softball coach is looking for someone that will help his team not only win, but learn more each year. Therefore, the junior that tried out, will be chosen over the senior. The junior knows that she will only grow from learning new things. On the other hand, some might believe that staying where they are at will help them grow. They say that when doing the same thing multiple times will help them learn from their mistakes and change the outcome. Therefore, this is also helping them grow. But if they are learning from their mistakes, are they not doing more than they already know? This is why learning new things, and changing the way we look at different outcomes will help us grow. Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “Nothing is at last sacred but the integrity of your own mind.” Emerson is a firm believer of maintaining self-reliance and values rather than following the crowd. He also explains that in order to be truly successful in life, a person must make decisions and trust in his or her judgment. In today’s society, teenagers are more likely to not be self-reliant because the teens feel they will be judged for having different beliefs. People today need to realize that they should not conform to be like the rest of the world, they must not depend on the judgment and criticism of others, and people must refuse to travel somewhere in order to forget their personal problems. In the essay Self Reliance, Emerson presents the idea of one being able to think independently (apart from society) and then choosing to compromise on those thoughts is suicide. Emerson presents this idea early on in his essay. He states, “envy is ignorance; that imitation is suicide; that man must take himself for better or worse.” This quote describes how having envy or being jealous of someone does not further one’s knowledge and waste their time. It goes on to state that attempting to be someone else is essentially killing one’s own self in terms of personality. This is seen in its most basic form when one follows others blindly never to create their own paths in life. What will most likely lead to a true life lived would be to take one’s self for the bad traits and the good traits. Ultimately, if one decides to be themselves and go through life unphased by such an action as envying or following the masses blindly they can achieve great things on their own.

So, with Emerson’s quote, it explains to me a lot of the issues that are going on right now. You can’t just be content in mastery, with sports you need to push your limits, and with life you need to step out of your comfort zone. You should look inside of yourself, and ask am I doing

	When Emerson says "Insist on yourself; never imitate." he is saying that you should act like you are on the inside; don't try to be like someone else. Be your own person and strive

Emerson criticizes that men do not even try to build their own opinion because they blindly trust the thoughts of the majority or they conform to the will of the community because their opinion differs from the common beliefs. They do not have enough courage and self-confidence to express their opinion since they are afraid that other men could look down at them because they do not have the same opinion. This turns them into just one, tiny, unimportant part of billions of people, whose thoughts are basically equal, but exactly the aspect of being different from everybody else, being an individual, being special and having his own personality is what a human being is all about and is necessary for having success.

Emerson was born on May 25, 1803 in Boston. He was very much influenced by the deaths of his relatives from his early life. His father died when he was 8, and all of his brothers died, and his wife died at the age 20. Also, his older son when he was only 7 years old. With many deaths, Emerson needed a person to lean on. For him, it was his aunt, Mary Moody. She was very close to him and helped him grow intellectually.
