In this Southern Gothic story, written by William Faulkner which is set before and after the Civil War there are several reoccurring tones throughout. The setting feeds into Emily's refusal to give up her past. She clings to her father, her home, and to Homer as many in the south following the Civil War. Many people seen the past as glorious. An analysis of how Faulkner sets the dark tone by using death, loneliness, and curiosity to convey his message. The first way that Faulkner sets the tone is with death. The story actually starts with Emily's funeral. The reader has to wonder if everyone that is attending the funeral is there for the right reasons. Most of the people that attend is being nosey considering that nobody else has been inside for many years. Death is also brought up when referring to her father. Emily was not able to accept the fact that her father had passed away and was going to keep the body. It was almost seeming as though Faulkner was trying to make her a subject of compassion. The final and most shockingly way that death portrayed a dark tone is when the truth about Homer was revealed. Nobody in the town was even suspecting that Emily could be responsible for the death. All during Emily's life her father would get rid of people and push them away. He did not think that anyone was good enough for her. Because of this she was isolated at an early age. Once her father is gone she is left alone and at an age to where she should be married. Once Homer is gone she becomes a recluse and is barely seen out of the house. In some sense Emily isolates herself by her snobbish actions when she is out in front of townspeople. She still holds herself to a very high standard.
