Throughout the history of English literature there has been a distinguished group of outcasts known as the other. The characters who are typically labeled the others are individuals that are perceived by a larger group as not belonging and are flawed in an essential way. The larger group sets the standards for what is normal and what is not. If a character is not up to par with such set forth standards they are labeled the other. The novels presented in AP English IV have contained multiple characters who became known as the others.

“Why Literature Matters” by Dana Gioia is a brilliantly written essay highlighting the exact reason as to why literature really matters. The introduction to the essay is pulling and interesting, but has a stronger powerful feeling than actual facts. The second paragraph is, on the other hand, mainly factual. Gioia uses a survey to legitimize his claims, and describes the organization that distributes said survey. This provides the reader with a deeper sense of understanding, and builds a trust for the author.

A statistical chart was created to analyze novels read my students in a 12th grade Literature class. There were a total of four classes and the teachers of the literature classes were Dr. Adhanom, Ms, Zadnichek, SGT Kulokowski, and Mr. Radoslovich. Each Literature class had a wide variation of students per class ranging anywhere from ten to forty-five students. The point of the statistical model was to show the teacher’s name of the 12th grade Literature class, the number of students in the class, the total novels that were read, and the average of novels that were read per student. Thus, the statistical chart allows people to see what class read the most and least amount of books. In addition, the chart shows an average of books read per students.
British Literature is filled with diverse and talented writers who through each period has brought something new to the table. Over the course of the term we have covered the Romantic period, the Victorian Age and the Modern period. Each period has had a hand in developing literature through to the modern age and each writer has influenced the next generation. To best examine each period of literature the paper will be split amongst the three major periods the course has covered. Each period had it’s own style, stories and ways of telling each story as such the paper will explore the writers of each time and their effect on the later generations. Literature in general has grown from the impact the past generations have had on the current writers. Thus British literature in particular has developed over each period a great deal and has ultimately lead us into the modern twenty-first century literature that we read today.
The author states in this chapter that the actual goal of the character, the quest, is not the actual point of the story. The point is to actually see how the character changes and develops. This has lead me to the conclusion that literature cannot truly be enjoyed by a reader without good characters. The human experience and growth is what calls for a quest and in the end fulfills it. We, the readers, do not care about the objects or the scenery in literature. We care about how it impacts, reflects, or relates to the character. This is why by the end of most quest based stories, as the author puts it, “We hear less and less” about the stated goal. Now it isn’t always that the goal decreases in importance to the protagonist, like in
