During the last semester of my senior year of high school, I enrolled in Tupelo High School's Advanced Placement Dual Credit English IV course. Ultimately, my time in Advanced English provided me with many challenges, but also helped me recognize high points as well as my strengths. These experiences helped mold me into the writer I am today.
Senior English at Tupelo High School had a reputation of being arduous as well as mentally and, at times, physically exhausting. Within the first week of class it became evident to me that the rumors were true. This was a drastic change compared to previous English courses I enrolled in. Where many of my previous English courses taught test based writing and reading strategies, English IV was the first
Before starting English 1102 I was so excited because I knew who class I wanted to take; but, his class was full. I was a very sad cookie. Then my friend Josh told me her knew a professor that was better than the one I wanted and that I would love her class. I’m glad I trusted Josh and took this class. In my English 1102 class I evolved as a writer, experienced a lot of new things, made a few mistakes, and learned from them.
Before this course, my writing exceeded above an average level, but now my writing has developed a sophisticated technique. This course pushed me to include higher comprehensive words into every piece I wrote. Continuously, I would be searching the internet for synonyms of verbs, adjectives, and nouns I wanted to include in my writings. This technique forced a maturity to emerge into my writing. As a writer, my options and understanding of diverse types of writing has improved immensely. This course allowed me to discover what forms of writing I write best, and what difficulty each type brings. My writing is strong with formal pieces, like the Prairie Meadows Scholarship Essay; pieces where I am allowed to use figurative language and make
As the Fall 2017 term comes to end, I look back on what I have accomplished in this class. English 102 – Composition II was one of the most challenging and toughest class I have taken at UW-Stout, but feel as though it has helped me to improve my writing skills. Even before the semester started the feeling of anxiety had taken over, as writing has never been my strongest skill, but stayed positive and confident I would be successful. Much to my surprise, my instructor, Michael Critchfield quickly addressed that this class would not be easy and amazingly changed my views of writing throughout the entire semester.
This year, AP English 3 has been my favorite class because of the wide variety of topics that we covered and the essay writing skills that we learned. By providing a large educational basis to students' writing, this class expands the learner's ability to communicate in a profesional, educational manner, a skill with which they will use for the rest of their life. As well as scoring eights (on a nine-point scale) on several English papers, the skills that I have grown and nurtured throughout the semester have helped me score fives or sixes on my AP US History essays (on a six-point scale). Through learning how to go in-depth and synthesize a topic, AP English 3 has taught me how to consistently score high grades on AP essays, as well as communicate
Coming into this University, I knew that my writing skills were not poor, however I needed more guidance on how to be a more successful writer. My last english class in high school was advanced writing class, so I thought that my skills acquired through that class would help me a lot through this class. I will say I credit my background knowledge for some of my success on my papers, but the English 101 course itself has helped me strengthen my skills. I picked the specific papers in my portfolio because they represent my writing style. I always wrote by what the book said, like a machine. My english teacher this year told me I needed to work on being comfortable with not always following the book. After I learned to do that, I had some trouble
After reviewing the “Reflection on College Writing,” I decided that I do not need to take an English course this upcoming fall. Instead, I will take English 2 during the spring of my Sophomore year. Since I already took AP English Language and Composition in high school, passed the exam, and earned credits for the English 1A course, I do not need to take English 1A. Furthermore, I plan to take American Civilization to fill my GE requirements for both Area C1 and C2. Therefore, I am not required to take English 1B, a course that fills Area C2. Besides AP English Language and Composition, I took and passed AP English Literature, another college-level English course. Based on my ease in completing the “Reflection on College Writing,” my previous
Before I stepped foot into my English 1303 class, I had assumed that it would’ve been a class that I was not fond off. Within high school, English was never one of my strong points; so when college started I did not really know what to expect. Most of the time during high school, I would never really give much thought into how my essays were written, I just wrote them to get it over with. Within high school English classes, I had never experienced any sort of connection with the pieces that I had to write about. The topics that we reviewed were of no interest to me. Being introduced to the same environment had me very much afraid of doing the same process all over again, but now I currently enjoy both the writing and the class. So far this
Throughout Honors English II, I not only became a more advanced reader, I also became a more experienced writer. All throughout the semester, I learned to analyze works of literature and look for themes in the novels I read, which also helped me to become a more thoughtful writer. I also greatly improved my vocabulary throughout the semester, which helped me achieve more advanced writing and reading skills. Overall, by using new writing techniques and new vocabulary, I was able to build on my previous reading and writing skills, and I hope to see a continuation of advancement in my reading and writing abilities in the years to come.
What I learned from this semester in English 101-102 class was to have an open mind and be creative. My papers had to have mean something to me and had to move like the rivers of Babylon. My papers had to keep the reader entertain and have resources that backed up my information. We had to use instruction that made our papers easier to understand. English 101-102 help me become a better academic writer because I learn how to make inquiries, seeking and valuing complexity, seeing writing as a conversation, and understanding writing as a process.
Over the course of my time in English 101 I have learned so much about writing. I have had to grow in places I did not know I needed to, and I have honed the skills I already possess. It has been such a great learning experience and with every assignment I have become a better writer. It definitely was not easy, but I worked incredibly hard to be where I am now. I found that transitioning from high school level to college writing was tough, there were some assignments that worked with my strengths, and others that played on my weaknesses, and that I have enjoyed certain assignments over others. It was a long road, but I am finally at the end and have become a much better writer than when I started.
This first semester at the University of Akron has flown by. I learned many new writing concepts that helped me become a better writer. English composition was a required class that I had to take in order to get my degree. Although this class was required I still wanted to take this class to become more knowledgeable about writing. Coming into English Composition I was worried about all of the papers and the workload that I would have to complete. I knew that I was going to have to write a lot more than I previously had in highschool, but I was unsure of just how much. The works that I decided to include in my portfolio comprise of my Literacy Narrative, Image Analysis Paper, and essay titled Mayas Hardships based on Maya’s experiences in I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings. I selected these works because I felt that they are the ones that require the most improvement to them. The papers i've chosen show how far I’ve came In English Composition.
I have only been attending Cleveland State University for two semesters, and as this course comes to an end I feel like I grown and learned many techniques more than ever. I came to Cleveland State University with only my high school knowledge on how to format an argumentative essay, and throughout this course I now know how to write and format many other papers. Taking English 100 has taught me how to break down and analyze an article, it taught me how to find confidence in my work, and it helped me grow to an even better writer.
From my academic history, there is a course that I would like to explain. I took English 12 over summer 2017 as an online course, but I did not complete the credit and got a 29% in the class. I am now taking Advanced English 12 during the school year.
At the beginning of the semester I was introduced to a lot of new things, This was an adventure I could have never imagined. I was finally living in a new place on my own. It was a lot to take in and handle. Not only a new environment but a new work ethic. As I attended my first day of class English 101 presented itself to be first. Meeting Ms.Schore not knowing what to expect was nerve wrecking. I quickly learned that this was a pretty straight forward class with a repetitive goal of producing essays over a period time to a given prompt.
When I first started college I did not know what to expect with an English class. I liked writing about topics that interested me, but high school did not allow me to do that. I took American History and we would have to write
