I'm writing this in the hopes that whomever it is that I should contact for help with scheduling may find it. I am not entirely sure if it is currently going to someone whom it may concern as the only counseling email listed is yours. If you are capable of assisting with this plight, please disregard this paragraph, otherwise I ask that you please forward it to whoever will best handle it. I'm sending you this so that I may ask for your assistance with a minor nuance of my schedule for the upcoming 2016-2017 school year. This being that I am currently slated to be in Honors English II instead of Gifted English II. I had misconceptions about my choices of English II Classes and opted for the Honors option instead of the Gifted option.
English 111 was the first class English class that I have taken since my senior year of high school in 2004. When I first signed up for the class I figured it was going to be a bit difficult with reading assignments, I was not expecting to be writing 3 to 5 papers every other week which I found to be hard at first.
English Comp 1 was an eye opening experience. The course was emotionally and physically draining, but I strongly believe it prepared me for Comp 2. Learning and improving are a few of the rewards I received through hard work and dedication during the course. Throughout English comp 1, I discovered my biggest weakness. I improved some of my various difficulties, and I achieved a rewarding high point.
“Finally!” I thought to myself as summer is slowly approaching, “I am done with this high school forever.” I honestly am so excited for summer that each day I count down the number days I have for school. Moreover, I constantly think of the activities that I will do during the summer that sound a lot better than school. Despite being overjoyed of leaving high school, I certainly would not deny that I have tremendously improved as a writer. True, as mentioned in all of my previous reflective essays, I still despise English; however, I have to grudgingly admit College Credit Plus English 1010 refined my writing skills from my junior year in AP English class. My classmates and teacher pointed out some ways that I could brush up my essays, which
As the Fall 2017 term comes to end, I look back on what I have accomplished in this class. English 102 – Composition II was one of the most challenging and toughest class I have taken at UW-Stout, but feel as though it has helped me to improve my writing skills. Even before the semester started the feeling of anxiety had taken over, as writing has never been my strongest skill, but stayed positive and confident I would be successful. Much to my surprise, my instructor, Michael Critchfield quickly addressed that this class would not be easy and amazingly changed my views of writing throughout the entire semester.
During the Fall semester I engaged in many activities related to the course English 110. For example, the service learning helped me out a lot because, I was not afraid to talk to other people or approach them. Also I was able to explore Hostos Community College by introducing English work to others such as topics about foods and how to have a healthier lifestyle. The course brought me closer to the community and the environment that I am living at because, it was not just work that us the students had to complete but we the students were educating people about the community. I find this very interesting because, although a lot of people that I interviewed did not go to college or maybe did and never finished are getting the opportunity to
Now, two months into the semester, I realize that though the work may not be challenging, this course acts as a calm refresher to the past two years of struggle that I faced in English.
Before I enrolled in English 101 my ability to write specific types of papers (argumentative, rhetoric, narrative, etc) were mediocre at best. However, from reading The Norton Field Guide to Writing and They Say, I Say I gained a deeper understanding on how to better argue a point or write a narrative with a clear theme. Moreover, from my time of being in English 101 I have improved tremendously in the given areas: Rhetoric, Technology, Research, and Collaboration.
After reading through the class syllabus a few times, I get the impression that AP English will be a significant departure from my previous english classes, especially in workload and our power to determine our essay and discussion. Prior to this class, I have taken honors English 9, 10, and 11, with Derry, Armstrong, and Brewer, respectively. Though the specific focus of each class varied, all three, English 9 and 10 particularly, followed a similar pattern of reading, guided analysis and discussion, essay writing, and assessment. Almost all of this was very structured, such that I felt that our essays were pretty formulaic. Additionally, much of the class discussion seemed superficial in places, often discussion time was cut very short,
Coming into this University, I knew that my writing skills were not poor, however I needed more guidance on how to be a more successful writer. My last english class in high school was advanced writing class, so I thought that my skills acquired through that class would help me a lot through this class. I will say I credit my background knowledge for some of my success on my papers, but the English 101 course itself has helped me strengthen my skills. I picked the specific papers in my portfolio because they represent my writing style. I always wrote by what the book said, like a machine. My english teacher this year told me I needed to work on being comfortable with not always following the book. After I learned to do that, I had some trouble
As the semester comes to an end this assignment gives me a great opportunity to look back on my experiences in English 111. Through my experience in English 111 recognizing several ideas that have greatly impacted me, my point of view on learning, and my actual learning. My experience in college has been beneficial because my professor approached teaching with a more aware effort and taught me how to approach learning and my role as a learner in a way. It is tough to put into words how much I have grown as a writer.
In English 101, I mastered getting to the point of getting to my essays with less disappointment with force; I learned the significant use of scratch paper. For example, I wasn’t always use to writing my essays on scratch paper; however, keeping in mind that the scratch paper was a nondurable tool as I finished my paper, because I knew they would be thrown away. Also, the professor required us to submit our scratch paper along with our essays. With this procedure, I was forced to rewrite my essays. He felt that the scratch paper would be a help to us as we continually to learn how to effectively write our essays.
English has always scared me a little because I have never been super confident in my writing abilities, however this year I am looking optimistic. By the end of this english course, my goal is to be more confident in my writing abilities. Also, I hope to not only become a better reader, but to comprehend what read. Sometimes when I read, I will not fully grasp what the author is trying to say, or I will not understand what the moral of the story is, so I would love to work on comprehension skills this year. Another area that needs improvement is knowing where to put commas. I realize that commas are placed to continue a sentence without having it turn into a run on, however I will usually place commas in the wrong spot, or I will not add them
In English Composition II I have been learning how to use all parts of higher-level thinking. I believe this should help me to view the discussions and debates gone over in class in a different perspective. I have learned about socioeconomic qualities, the notion of race, and identity crisis that will help me to cope with people feelings and mines have found better ways to cope avoiding the stereotypes that history has left certain groups of the population with a cold shoulder. I have learned the proper ways to oversee the issues and problems in the recent units we’ve read. I believe these topics I can always learn from to make me become a leading student. I like to find better ways and solutions to help me distinguish the concepts of the
In high school, I wrote a lot of research papers and it helped me in college and later on in life. The English 12 class I took in high school there was a lot of writing in it. It improved my writing skills and got better at writing since I didn’t speak much English when I started high school. In reading, I read a lot of books in high school which improved my reading skills. My teacher helped me alot with reading and writing she was a big support for me. Now I can read and write good but sometime I get stuck but overall I improved myself a lot. This summer I took english 78b which helped me alot with my reading skills. I read two books in that class and at the end took a test on it. I learned a lot of new words and I will keep learning. I enjoy
This first semester at the University of Akron has flown by. I learned many new writing concepts that helped me become a better writer. English composition was a required class that I had to take in order to get my degree. Although this class was required I still wanted to take this class to become more knowledgeable about writing. Coming into English Composition I was worried about all of the papers and the workload that I would have to complete. I knew that I was going to have to write a lot more than I previously had in highschool, but I was unsure of just how much. The works that I decided to include in my portfolio comprise of my Literacy Narrative, Image Analysis Paper, and essay titled Mayas Hardships based on Maya’s experiences in I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings. I selected these works because I felt that they are the ones that require the most improvement to them. The papers i've chosen show how far I’ve came In English Composition.
