As a Florida resident, the concern regarding current legislation prohibiting contamination of Florida’s natural resources is alarming. It is quite simple to comprehend that pollution is ‘bad’ and that it has long term ill effects on the human population and the natural eco system alike. Many people have heard of lead contamination in drinking water or have observed pictures of sea creatures entangled in plastic, so a broad level of awareness is a non-issue. However, occurrences such as contaminated drinking water are believed to only exist in ‘other states’ or ‘in other countries’ because people conveniently believe that our government has our best interest in mind and feel that it is government obligation to injunction a healthy environment. The issue lies within the confines of government and the exacting measures of how legislation is defined and carried forth. Acknowledgement of substandard practices shall promote the needed sense of urgency to reverse damaging environmental practices and such urgency will only develop through action of government, pursued by the people. In the great state of Florida, environmental regulation should be held in the highest regard, as the ocean and waterways are the main providers of Florida’s flora and fauna. Exploration of federal and state government, as well as the dire necessity for a cleaner environment, will bring forth clarity and will generate momentum toward a flourishing and sustainable environment. There are various types of air pollution contributors in California such as fire generated pollutants and vehicle traffic, which add particulate matter and carbon monoxide into the air we breathe. According to an article by Union of Concerned Scientists (Cars, trucks, and air pollution, 2014) particulate matter is made up of fine particles soot and metal that can pose serious threats to human health when deep in the lungs. Other pollutants emitted from vehicles are: nitrogen oxide which lowers the body’s defense system against respiratory infections such as pneumonia, carbon monoxide which blocks oxygen from reaching vital organs, sulfur dioxide which is emitted by both power plants and vehicles affect children and asthmatics, and hazardous air pollutants (toxics) which are chemicals that are linked to cancer, birth defects and other illnesses (Union of Concerned Scientists, 2014).
Air Pollution today has lead CDC's fight against environmental -related respiratory illness, including asthma. An estimated number of 6.5 million deaths are attributed each year to poor air quality, making this the world's largest threat to human health.According to the World Energy Outlook and the IEA estimate that death due to household air pollution in Africa may decrease by 110,00 to 2040.However, due to economic growth, urbanization and automobile emissions, outdoor air pollution may rise from 300,00 to 450,000 over the same period. Am going to be looking at the causes of air pollution. the problems emerging with air pollution and also how we as a community can help decrease the amount of death rate associated with air pollution.I remember growing up in Africa Air pollution was always a talk about a subject that always comes out because it is really contagious due to the fact that we are breathing bad air that is caused by our human contribution to the environment.Air pollution is considered to be a public health problem, it is responsible for most of our health problems after some research has been conducted in many different parts of the world and regions. According to the Geochemistry and Health paleopathological research suggests that air pollution is a form of smoke, plagued our oldest ancestors.Air pollution has emerged as one of the leading risk factors for stroke worldwide.
Have you ever wondered how pollution, or more specifically how fossil fuels add to the effects of global warming? Fossil fuels are organic hydrocarbons formed from the remains of dead animals and plants which have decayed for millions of years, there are three main types coal, oil and natural gas. While oil is the most biggest form of energy source today, coal was discovered first and has been use since 1,000 BC and it was in the 1800s that it replaced biomass as the primary source of energy while massive consumption of fuel didn't start until early 1900s. Despite being a natural source these fossil fuels have greatly impacted the environment negatively, adding to the greenhouse gases, inhibiting heat to be released into the solar system and as a result is causing rising sea eels and irregular weather patterns.
Environmental health is your wellbeing of your surroundings or conditions in which a human, animal,
In this article, problems of air pollution and the way that they effect the Chinese community are up for debate. There are major concerns with the rise of air pollution in China, the biggest concern being the fact that there were over 1 million deaths due to air pollution in 2015. Although, the community is trying to find ways to fix the problem; some of the potential solutions may be more harmful to the community in the future. Some citizens feel that cutting jobs with heavy machinery and building cars that do not burn fossil fuels are helping reduce air pollution. Although, decisions like these might increase unemployment rates in the future by taking away jobs in these fields. So, what’s more important? Clean air or a financially stable community and economy?
The data collected and found while in the trip, can determine who polluted the water is. It was concluded that the water quality is good to excellent. The first graph shows the level of nitrates, phosphates and dissolved oxygen in the water. There was an average of 2.5 ppm of nitrate found, 1.7 ppm of phosphates, and 8.7 ppm of dissolved oxygen. Phosphates and nitrates are harmful to the water and can cause algae blooms, which then creates dead zones. These chemicals come from farms mostly, and run down through the soil, into the water. That is why areas with an abundance of agriculture can sometimes negatively affect their nearby water source. The dissolved oxygen level found was also good. Dissolved oxygen is the gaseous form of oxygen found in water. Without it, animals would not be able to survive underwater. Many factors affect how much dissolved oxygen is in the water, such as temperature, the atmosphere, water movement speed, and plant life in the water. The average temperature of the water was about 69 degrees Fahrenheit and about 20.5 degrees Celsius. Cooler water temperature creates more dissolved oxygen. With more dissolved oxygen, it is easier for animals to survive in the water. Another component of the water that was measured, was turbidity. Turbidity is how far down in the water you would be able to see with your naked eye. If water has a high level as turbidity, it would mean that you could see far down, and the water would be clearer. If it
Chemical pollution consider one of the most pressing environmental challenges that we face. It is imperative that we address the environmental hazards associated with chemical pollutants. Polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and halogenated compounds because of their considerable toxicity and recalcitrant nature, are particularly concerning pollutants. The hydrophobicity among PAHs also increases human health risks by promoting bioaccumulation in the fatty tissue. Thus, the determination of effective and cost efficient methods for removal or degradation of PAHs is essential. , Bacterial bioremediation, under in situ conditions, is a promising strategy for reducing polyaromatic hydrocarbons pollution.
The Environmental Protection Agency queues in on and monitors six criteria pollutants that enter the atmosphere and can be potentially dangerous to humans. These pollutants “pose especially great threats to human health,” (Withcott & Laposata, 2012, p. 283). They are carbon monoxide (CO), sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), tropospheric ozone (O3), particulate matter, and lead (Pb). As mentioned each pose grave threats to humans. The measurement of tropospheric ozone routinely surpasses the recommended safe level by the EPA, (Withcott & Laposata, 2012).
Water is a transparent and nearly colorless chemical substance that is the main constituent of Earth's streams, lakes, and oceans, and the fluids of most living organisms, water can be liquid, solid or gas, is tasteless and odorless. Water covers 71% of the Earth's surface. On Earth, 97% of the planet's crust water is found in seas and oceans and only 3% of this water is freshwater, and 98.8% of that water is in ice.
Not only has climate changed the natural habits of weather in the world, it has also started to melt the fresh water ice caps which is causing the sea levels to rise. Globally sea levels rose by eight inches in the past century. Within two decades sea levels have increased more than twice of the increases recorded in the last century. This has caused many cities and countries to slowly sink into the ocean for an example Virginia’s Tangier Island. The ocean has reclaimed about 70% of the island in the past century. To make things better the President of the United States “Donald Trump” told the mayor ‘Your Island has been there for hundreds of years, and I believe your island will be there for hundreds more.’ The denial of climate change has been around for a century now but that should not be a cause to not continue to improve the way things are done to reduce the pollutants released into the atmosphere. If people in many of these advanced countries started to use public transportation most of the emissions created by vehicals can be drastically decreased. If gas guzlers were swapped for something more eco the release of these harmful fumes can be decreased. If these guzzling cars are changed for cars with electricity and hydro fuel can also help the earth. Venice, Italy is another city that is in the state of panic. The City of Venice will flood time to time like it is a natural occurrence. This flooding issue hasn’t just been a recent issue it started since the beginning
If I had to be honest, I'd have to say that I had forgotten all about the problem with plastic in our oceans. with all the problems going on in the world I had forgotten about our world’s health. The most important thing that is keeping us all existent. this article has opened my eyes to what everyone else was ignoring.
a result, large numbers of cities are suffering from air pollution. Almost two-thirds of cities in china have
en I moved in Chicago four years ago, I assumed water it would be the last problem for the one of the biggest cities in the world. Considering that Chicago has a very big water resource such is Lake Michigan, seems that water pollution is increasing every day. First weeks in Chicago, I was told by my friends, not to drink the water by the tap, otherwise I would get sick. They suggested me to buy water bottles, as the water from the tap was very dirty. I always asked myself, why Chicago is listed in one of the cities that has water pollution, when it has opportunities to abolish this problem. This topic always provoked me, because we can take care of this problem if we really know what we should do.
For my final project I have chosen to research water quality, primarily focusing my attention to watersheds on invasive and non-invasive species that can potentially wreak havoc on bodies of water. There are a total of 944 lakes located here in NH where I live. The largest lake in the state is Lake Winnipesaukee, which is very popular for many reasons, including its beauty and all the recreational activities it brings. While most spend their days swimming and boating on the “big lake” (that’s what we locals refer to is as), they are seemingly unaware to the dangers that lurk beneath the surface threatening economic and ecological losses. The biggest threat to the big lake is milfoil. Milfoil is an invasive aquatic plant that has been contaminating Lake Winnipesaukee since it was first spotted in 1965. This topic has always been of concern to me. It’s sad, really. Something so beautiful and natural can be overrun, affecting the livelihood of the lake and all who enjoy it. My hope is that through education we can greatly reduce the amount of milfoil in our lakes.
Let have a critical look at our environment as a complex system with many different interaction between its different components making life possible on earth. Unfortunately, human activities over the years have adversely affected the chemical, biological, physical and social component of the natural environment leading to environmental pollution and climatic change. In the United Kingdom for example, the ‘Great Smog of 1952’ cannot be forgotten in history when we talk about environmental pollution and it effect on human. The great smog of 1952 which was formed from steady smog missed with soot and sulphur dioxide from coal burning occurred killed 12,000 people in the United Kingdom killed (Fullerton 2016). This in addition to other serious environmental pollution and their effect on the environment and human has greatly affected policies and control of emissions into the environment. (Dunnings, ND)
