When we think about ethical issues, we talk and hear about them frequently. As part of being a Catholic, we often hear about common issues like using contraception, homosexuality, and justice for the poor, sex before marriage along many others. All these ethical issues range from topics like economic justice, Christians and violence, human sexuality, environmental and biomedical ethics and as individuals belonging to different religions there are disagreements. Time also places disagreements on these issues, we are now part of the twentieth century and as Catholics I believe we have different points of view that differ from periods before, in regards to religious standards that we all must follow. In the United States, sources of pollution such as toxic waste dumps, incinerators, manufacturing plants, and other facilities are typically located in lower income neighborhoods—often African American and Latino—because poorer communities do not have the political and legal clout that wealthy communities do. People might argue that by placing environmental hazards in poor communities, it gives them an opportunity for employment where otherwise they can try to look for employment elsewhere but not get hire for the same reason they are building polluting machines and hazardous buildings in their neighborhood. Yes, it is an opportunity for employment but at what cost, by putting them in danger. This can easily be alleviated by evenly distributing the pollutants around the city, state, or country not targeting only a certain population but all populations. Another ethical option to help with the issue is increasing environmental standards for consumers by revising laws on pollutants that are permissible and not permissible. Of course, there are pollutants that we as a society need in order to keep up with today’s waste and population but limiting the unnecessary ones that only benefit a very small portion of the population will make even a small difference. First of all Christians believe that every person is created in the image of God, Imago Dei, therefore, everyone is equal and skin color or social status should not make anyone superior to their neighbor. Minorities should not have to be the only one’s suffering the human community as a whole. In relation this, earth is a creation that God has provided for us and as Christians we should have a relationship with the environment and be able to take care of it just as we are supposed to take care of each other. Moreover, according to McCormick and Connors the Bishops of Vatican II state very clearly that every type of discrimination must be overcome and eradicated as it is contrary to God’s intent. God. It is a Christian’s ethical value to love thy neighbor and being racist totally contradicts God’s policies. Depriving minorities from the good and healthy resources and instead torturing them with hazardous material is completely unjust. Another Christian value that affects the issue of environmental racism is the option for the poor, women, and children. Putting environmental hazards in poor communities where children and women live is giving preferential option to the already wealthy and stable people.
