Because of this brand recognition, it has become important for businesses to design their websites to reflect their overall marketing strategies. This is especially important in the retail world. All retail businesses have a similar overall marketing strategy of generating sales and retaining the customer for future sales. Most of the retail giants still greatly rely on the success of their brick and mortar stores to turn a profit. However, internet sales for these brick and mortar stores have increasingly risen over the last few years to compete with the retail stores like Amazon that are strictly internet based businesses. Brick and mortar retail stores, such as Walmart, Target, Kmart, and Nordstrom, have each designed their websites to reflect the overall retail marketing strategy as well as the individual marketing strategies that have made their brick and mortar businesses successful.

Nike has seldom manufactured products own premises, except their air bladders. The shoes are manufactured through outsourcing and alliances with other companies. A successful company like Nike formed its organization on the customer values that have the MOST impact on the consumers mind – Design/R&D, Marketing and Distribution. Even though manufacturing is a vital function to perform, Nike realized that there were other ways to go about this function and thereby save both cost and maintain its focus on the critical customer value areas.
Amazon’s core competencies are in its ability to effectively use and develop technology to drive site traffic and enhance the customer experience. defined the environmental, climate and sustainability-related issues that nowadays impact global demand and supply. Global warming, the rise of sea level, storms have affect on worldwide logistics. Mainly, these changes could increase the risk of delays, disruptions, damage and failure across land based, air and marine transportation systems. Thus, not only consumer tastes reflect environmental awareness, but these issues also have impact on supply chain. Recently, the interest in environmentally friendly supply chain management has risen considerably. This can be seen by the number of initiatives taken by companies. It is expected that the manufacturers should reduce sources of waste and pollution throughout their entire suppliers and distributors and consumers. As a result, it enhances competitiveness and creates better customer service and increased profitability. Environmentally friendly behavior can also contribute to the competitive advantage of having a “green image” of products, processes, and technologies. For example, Nike the world’s leading sports footwear company, fifteen years ago its sales dropped considerably because company faced a great anger from customers, they were burning its shoes instead of wearing them. People knew that Nike had manufacture in poor Asian countries, where working conditions were unsafe and child labor was exploited. While company insisted that these conditions were not under their responsibility, public demanded to take this responsibility. As company’s reputation was under threat, Nike realized that ignoring supply chain responsibilities was not wise. Therefore Nike decided to take actions and conducted training at their factories, tried to build tight relationships with colleagues in factories. Nike started to use environmentally friendly materials, working out less water and energy, were used for production. In 2005, Nike introduced a product line designing on the principles of sustainability.
