* Air quality measurements- at our site visit we also tested the amount of Sulphur dioxide (SO2) in the air using an air quality metre. The results were then recorded on our Air Quality Data Sheet. * Slope Measurements- the slope of our site area was measured in 1 meter intervals. The results were then recorded on our slope data sheets
6) Observations –at this site the majority of the area was flat with low-frequently maintained grass and few very mature trees. We also noticed that the area had many recreational activities such as playing football and cricket. taking place within it. The location of our site was also observed; the site (savannah) is surrounded by many buildings, activities and a free flow of nonstop traffic surrounding the area. There was a slight overcast and during our survey rain began to fall.
7) Comments- based on my observations I believe that the savannah is a man made savannah. There were few trees and a lot of cars which may cause high levels of carbon monoxide.
8) Follow-up Activities- After doing our survey of the Queen’s Park Savannah we will have to return to our school lab and carry out our tests on the soil.

Site Location- Fondes Amandes Reaforestation Project
Objective- to investigate how human activity positively or negatively impacted on the species diversity in Fondes Amandes, North West Trinidad
Activities- At this site we did a vegetation survey,
iii. Additionally, the land is covered in a dense jungle environment and habitat, although the shoreline has beaches.
This natural habitat quickly transformed with the settlement of the French in 1699 in the New Orleans area (Van Heerden, 2007). Although approximately 7 feet below sea level, New Orleans was quickly established and small scale agricultural events began taking
It is our duty as humans to ensure the vitality of biodiversity in the world around us, because without biodiversity we could not survive. One of the main problems seen today is the loss of biodiversity in our oceans. Pavan Sukhdev of the UN Environmental Program was quoted as saying "We are in the situation where 40 years down the line we, effectively, are out of fish." (Save our Seas, 2014) Although this quote is both powerful and grim, this is only a future we could meet if we were to continue the mass commercial fishing of stock fish. An essential cornerstone to securing biodiversity, species protection is of the utmost importance when it comes to environmental issues. In the Pacific Northwest there are few species
By comparing the topography, soil moisture levels, relative humidity, and wind speed of the upland Savanna and Bottomland forest we will be able to compare and contrast between these two vegetation zones. The data collected in the investigation will be used to test the hypothesis that the bottomland forest has a higher degree of shrub layer cover than the savanna. The higher level of shrubs in the bottomland forest might be attributed to the space available for shrub layer species. In addition, the data collected will confirm that the bottomland forest has a higher tree density than the

On October 6th 2015, the students of Mattawan’s AP Environmental class took a trip to the local stream of the Mattawan Consolidated Schools area. The purpose of this trip was to conduct a stream study to determine the health, conditions, and pollution levels of this small body of water. A multitude of factors came into play when making a judgement on the stream’s health, and making sure to take all of these essential points was crucial to the study. A variety of thorough experiments were conducted to help make this overlying conclusion, as many students adopted many roles in the study. Students used a physical survey form, water test data sheet, and taxa recording sheet to record their findings. Teamwork was essential in making sure all of this information could be found accurately and efficiently. The combination of all of the final results allowed the class to make a judgement of the stream’s state.
The environment of Jackson County is a mix of urban and rural areas. The downtown areas of the cities have been restored and mostly historical buildings. These buildings house a variety of restaurants, bars, and small businesses. The homes near the downtown areas are mix of homes that have been restored or are in need of repair. The larger, newer homes are in the outlying areas. The homes in Jackson County are overall well maintained with landscaping, which includes trees, shrubs, and flowers. The homes in the area have a mix of heating sources such as wood, electric or gas. The county would be considered rural. There are large farms, vineyards, and orchards between each city. Some of the cities are in rural mountainous areas. The newer neighborhoods have incorporated parks within their subdivisions. These parks have playgrounds and walking paths. These common areas appear to be open to everyone.
The ecological quizzes asked about individual behaviors relating to transportation, energy, food, recycling, pollution, and possessions. Essentially, all behaviors mentioned in the quizzes have some sort of impact on the environment. Both quizzes asked about what type of transportation was most frequently used and also about solar energy. In addition, the quizzes focused on how much you eat and what you eat. These certain behaviors are featured in the quizzes because they have the potential to contribute to a carbon, or ecological footprint. This “footprint” is one’s impact on the environment. One’s impact on the environment is made up of small decisions--either positive or negative--over his or her lifetime. These decisions can include: choosing

The Timucuan Preserve is a luscious green forest located on the northeast coast of Florida. Walking into the trails of the Timucuan, I hear the soothing sounds of birds chirping. I take a seat onto the bench next to the trail edge. Observing the runners pass by I can hear their fast foot steps on the soft earth. Time passes and a light breeze touches upon my skin. I have begun to notice the air as being slightly humid yet comfortable even without the light breeze.
Complete this week’s lab by filling in your responses to the questions from Geoscience Laboratory. Select answers are provided for you in red font to assist you with your lab work. Although you are only required to respond to the questions in this worksheet, you are encouraged to answer others from the text on your own.
Business that lined themselves along this road were geared toward tourism, local shops, hotels and guided trips that promised the eager foreigner they would take them to see a tapir and possible the elusive jaguar. I spoke with a few local rangers at the Monteverde National Park about the wildlife and the growing area around it. They had mentioned that the tapir was on the verge of extinction in the region and that a jaguar had not been scene for years. I could not help but connect the dots of the growing economic needs of the locals and the habitats of these two creates and the ecological damage that came with expansions of towns to
The final category, physical environment, measures areas like air pollution, sanitation, and factors indirectly related to pollution such as auto emissions measured by the number of lone drivers. Air pollution is measured as an “average daily density of fine particulate matter in micrograms per cubic meter (PM2.5) in a county” Drinking water violations are used to indicate water quality. A “yes” under the “drinking water violations” indicates the presence of a drinking water violation in at least one community within the county. Violations are related to contaminate level, residual disinfectant level, and treatment techniques. Jackson County ranks 88 of 115 counties in physical environment. Several programs and initiatives are in place in an effort to address health factors of residents of Jackson County. To improve the accessibility of healthy food, the Jackson County Health Department works alongside the parks program on the Eat Smart in Parks program offered throughout the
The results of the observation of biodiversity on Mississippi State University campus was the wooded area contained eight different species, the water’s edge contained twelve different species, and the manicured lawn contained four different species. The eight different species in the wooded area are brown spider, black bird, pillbug, big red ant with black head, sparrow, earthworm, red-headed woodpecker, and bigger brown spider. The brown spider had a total of one species with a relative abundance of 0.0526. The black bird had a total of one species with a relative abundance of 0.0526. The pillbug had a total of three species with a relative abundance of 0.1579. The big red ant with black head had a total of five species with a relative
Tropical Savannah ecosystems are varied throughout the year in their climate. While some ecosystems have relatively stable conditions, the tropical savannah ecosystems have a few factors of climate that differ seasonally and annually. Mostly, precipitation is the factor that varies annually by great amounts. The varying precipitation has a great effect on what grows in the ecosystem. As far as temperature goes, the average lowest is eighteen degrees Celsius. On the other hand, highest temperatures are generally after the wet season. Temperatures do change with
