Thank you Thebestdebate for your round. Let us submerge once again into the topic. Epicurus is arguing that if God is as defined in round one would not allow evil to exist. It seems intuitive to see that such a being that is omnipotent and omniscient would be worthy of worship if he did eliminate evil. Epicurus is not confusing correlation or association for causation, he is stating that if one is able and willing to do what is moral and does not, they cannot logically be morally perfect. This is basic logic, not fallacious at all. My opponent argues that evil is the fault of man citing the fable of Adam and Eve. This heavily misses the mark for several reasons. Let’s pretend for a moment that the story is true. The supposed sin that was
“Hey guys! This is the last communication you shall receive from me. I now walk out to live amongst the wild. Take care, it was great knowing you” (Qtd. In Krakauer 69). After graduating from Emory University, Christopher McCandless abandoned everything, gave his entire savings account to charity, and then hitchhiked to Alaska to live in the wild. In the novel, Into the Wild, Was McCandless justified in shunning society? McCandless was justified in shunning society because he simply wanted to find himself and be independent without any distractions from his friends or family.
If Iowa was the only state in the United States, what city would you live in
If God were omniscient, omnipotent, and perfectly good, then the world would not contain evil.
Being an athletes is one of the best-paid jobs on Earth. Being that they are paid so much the cost for the consumer is very high. The prices of tickets and sports memorabilia have been steadily rising over the years. The average ticket prices for the NHL, MLB, NBA and NFL all rose 5% to 10% this year, according to Jon Greenberg, executive editor of Team Marketing Report. (Mihoces).
That being said, God’s gift of free will to humanity is often used as the prime example as to why evil exist. Free will, theologian's would argue, is among the greatest goods, but for humans to truly have free will they must also have the choice to do evil. This argument is flawed however. The theologian would argue that free will and not being able to do evil is incompatible and therefore not possible, but God himself is a testament to the opposite. God being wholly good, would not freely choose to do evil, and assuming no theologian would argue that God has no free will, it must follow that it is possible to have free will and not do any evil.
The cost of college tuition is continually on the rise and has placed many burdens on high school students as well as their families. Some of the burdens that are placed are a result of parents putting pressure on their children to earn scholarships. Some of the burden is a result of students putting pressure on themselves to earn scholarships. Then, there is the burden of high college debt once the student graduates. Is this pressure really helping our students or is it hurting them? The bottom line is college tuition is skyrocketing out of control and something must be done before it destroys our families and our children.
The last time I saw Charlie outside prison walls we were on the run. Charlie was on the run, not I, I just went along for the ride because he was my husband. Charlie was on parole, but he loved to drink his booze. In our state it's a violation to drink while on parole.
The problem of evil states “If God can prevent the suffering of the innocent yet chooses not to, He is not good. If God chooses to prevent the suffering but cannot, He is not omnipotent. If God cannot recognize the suffering of the innocent, He is not wise”. Obviously, this created quite a discussion in my class. I felt frustrated by my classmates and their willingness to accept this theory, it seemed like . I called up my Grandmother to discuss it, and we both agreed that although God did not deliberately will evil, he gave us the possibility of it when he allowed us to make choices freely. In my class the next day my professor asked us to raise our hands if we believed God and I instantly thought of the verse from
This does not make God perfectly good because he made humans able to freely choose and sometimes humans choose evil. If God were a perfectly good being then human’s free choices would always be for the good. This also concludes that God is not all knowing because he cannot control the free choices humans make (Mackie 210). A theist could argue that God doesn't create evil since humans freely choose evil but it cannot be avoided without depriving us humans of our free will. There is no way that God can limit freedom in any way and still provide significant moral freedom.
This is the problem of evil. Augustine summed it up most effectively when he said, “Either God cannot abolish evil or he will not. If he cannot then he is not all-powerful. If he will not then he is not all good.” Augustine viewed evil as merely the absence of good just as dark is the absence of light, a non-being “a name for nothing but the want of good”. He looked to the Bible for an explanation for the existence of God and believed that the fall of humanity from grace, as shown in Genesis, showed the origin of evil. He believed that evil came into the world because human beings had deliberately turned away from God and his goodness. This suggests that both moral and natural evil is a result of original human sin.

“Your assignment is to write a persuasive essay and present it to the class in a week. You will be graded based on how convincing it is. Today we will be choosing topics,” announced Mr. Bowerbank, my 7th grade English teacher and ruler of classroom 110. My class simultaneously groaned at the prospect of work. I simply lifted my head with intrigue as it was already May and about time we had our first essay. He then proceeded to give examples of topics we could choose and gave us some time to think before we had to tell him our topic. My classmates were already rushing to tell the teacher their idea lest someone else steal it. That meant the usual abortion, death penalty, or drug use topics were out. I really couldn't think of anything and the teacher was slowly making his way through the remaining students like an executioner beheading criminals in a line. I have always thought that he would make a marvelous supervillain if he had a curly mustache, a tophat, and a cape. Eventually my name was called. I slowly dragged myself over to his desk. Even sitting down, he still seemed to tower over me. “What is your topic Cindy?” As usual in such desperate times, my mind turned to food. “Waffles are better than pancakes.” I figured that a waffle was just a differently shaped pancake with a nicer texture. “Hmm. Excellent topic. I look forward to your essay!” I survived to live yet another day.
“Seize the day, and put the least possible trust in tomorrow” (Horace). Carpe diem is a Latin term, known as "seize the day". Every individual has the potential to overcome all their obstacles in life. It depends on the ability of an individual to make decisions using their intellect. The protagonist faces tragedies that flips their whole life around and it is hard to defeat, unless they show strength and power. These literatures examine a variety of problems that are unfamiliar to a mainstream audience such as; prophecy in “Oedipus Rex”, the American Dream in “The Death of a Salesman” and lastly violating the right to freedom in the “The Handmaid’s tale”. Many obstacles occur in life, and the struggles that one faces
This is because the inconsistency in the concept of God in the presence of evil. To accept that a morally perfect God with all power; and one that at the same time is capable of eliminating evil but chooses not to will call into question the very nature of God. Put another way, a God that can not prevent all evil is not all powerful. If He knows there is evil and can prevent it but chooses not to, then He is not perfectly good. To bridge this apparent contradiction, some theologians introduce the concept of free will.
Why spend money that is really needed for other things? Why live uncomfortably? Why be trapped in this hole called a home that belongs to another person? Why not live free and peacefully? When a person rents he or she usually throws away money that could be used to purchase something that belongs to them. Money is not easy to come by so why pay out hundreds toward something that is not benefit to the person paying it out. There is no good explanation for making a decision like this. The best option in a situation like this is to buy a house. Buying a house is a better option than renting an apartment.
