One day, Equality 7-2521 who was filled with joy, sang during dinner and was told off by a Council Member. He tells the Council Member the reason that he sings is because he is happy. The Council Member then retaliates that the reason he should be happy is because he lives with his fellow brothers. After that occurrence, while in his tunnel, Equality 7-2521 meditates on the meaning of happiness and realizes that it is forbidden to be unhappy and that his brothers are unhappy because they are afraid. What makes Equality 7-2521 happy is when he is in his tunnel performing experiments and pursuing his study of light, but in order to do so, he must sneak away because to his and everyone else’s knowledge, the society in which they live in reject an individual’s freedom to pursue individual happiness because true happiness should come from living beside/with your fellow brothers. When one is only able to achieve happiness through a group of people in a society, it is to be expected that its citizens will feel as if life is meaningless and painful. From what Equality 7-2521 has witnessed, it is evident that the flame of independence inside him is growing. …show more content…
Inch by inch and little by little does Rand’s hero move from collectivism in the beginning of the story, to egoism in the end. From putting himself second and wanting to please his brothers, to saying he owes nothing to his brothers and everything to himself, one can definitely see how Prometheus’ heart and mindset has changed from the start. When Prometheus hears that he will be a father, he tells himself that his son will be raised to be become a real man. A man who takes pride in who he is as an individual, and one who lives for himself and not others, as he should of his entire life. Throughout the story, Prometheus never worshiped his brothers or god. Instead, he worshiped himself and kept the sacred word near and dear to his heart.
I believe that one of the ultimate questions that all members of the human species asks is ‘How can I find happiness?’ and reflected in this question is a desire to find a happy, fulfilling, quality life. Many people try to find such happiness through their careers, material possessions, and all manner of other pursuits. What a large portion of these people do not realize is that happiness and the elements necessary to achieve a quality life may not come from place, position, or possession but from attitude. In both Gilgamesh by Stephen Mitchell and Sunny Chernobyl by Andrew Blackwell, the reader can see these ideas explored in great detail.
In summary, the term represents that a man should be selfish in the sense of it being beneficiary of his own moral actions. Prometheus lived in a collectivist society, nobody did anything for themselves, everything was done to benefit the group as a whole. Eventually, he realizes that he doesn’t have to get up and work every day just for the benefit of the others. Once again, Prometheus does show himself as an egoist, but not in an unhealthy or corrupt way. In Anthem Prometheus at one point states, “I owe nothing to my brothers, nor do I gather debts from them. I ask none to live for me, nor do I live for any others.” In this quote he is declaring his egoism by repeating the word “I.” He has decided to be his own person and do whatever makes him happy. Prometheus has come to the conclusion that the world is not a whole, he is his own person. It is around this point in time when he begins to change “We”s into “I”s and uses words to describe just himself and not the
One might be led to believe that this society is a perfect place to live, since all the inhabitants are eternally happy. There are no wars, pain, or suffering, all definite pluses, yet readers must not judge too quickly.
Kate Chopin’s aspiration to deliver The Awakening was to convey to the early 20th century public her position of women’s roles, rights, and independence in a time of strict gender roles. Chopin conveys to readers the oppression of women during her time. Edna Pontellier is Chopin’s protagonist in the novel, and she finds herself unhappy and contempt of her role as a republican mother, which characterizes the idea of women’s work, and Edna identifies indirectly with the women at the Seneca Falls convention. Throughout the book Edna’s husband, Leónce Pontellier, continually scolds her for not being an attentive and loving mother and Edna compares herself with Madame Ratignolle, who is the epitome of motherhood
Paragraph 1 tone : He seems nervous about this trip He says ,“We’ve all been up since midnight, starting our predive checks after a couple of restless hours of sleep, and the whole team is running on adrenaline. These are the roughest conditions I’ve dived in so far on the expedition” The way he says that they’ve been up the whole night doing checks without sleep and how this is one of the roughest conditions he has dived in so far just gives the sense of nervousness if he will make the challenge.
An important theme in Kate Chopin’s novel The Awakening is the desire for some women to abandon their dull lives as only mothers and wives. In other words, solitude. The main character, Edna Pontellier is a woman with such desires. She has two sons with her husband, Leonce Pontellier, whom she would rather not be with. The theme mentioned earlier is seen all throughout the novel, by means of several different symbols, including birds. There are three examples of birds used within the story, two of which in the very first chapter. The story opens with a loud parrot repeating the phrase: ‘Allez vous-en! Allez vous-en! Sapriste!” (Chopin 1) This roughly translates to “Go away! Go away! For God’s sake!” These words
Chapter 5: Paul explains about how unsanitary the camps are, explaining that he and his friends had gotten louses (lice) in their head, and they try to attempt to get it off. Haie tries to cheer up the rest of the soldiers by telling them that he might have got the lice from the hospital, but he is the one who laugh the most, for 30 minutes straight. After trying to get the lice off themselves, they hear that Himmelstoss got in trouble for harassing the soldiers, and the magistrate’s son caught him in the action. Hearing the news that Himmelstoss got in trouble for his wrongdoings, Paul and the rest of the group start planning out what they should do or say to Himmelstoss when he comes back to the camp. When talking about what they should do
For example instead of alway’s referring to him as, “We” he would say, “I.” He would be willing to share all of these ideas withe the golden one. The only person he trusts is the golden one, international 4-8818 and his other friends. He said later he would go and bring them here. then he will make his own race. The theme of the book is that losing sight of the individual and his or her needs will lead to the destruction of all progress and all forward movement. This is related to the book because Prometheus wanted to work in the home of the scholars but the government did not let him. That is denying his needs. This lead to the destruction of all progress and all forward movement. Like the people revolting against the government.
In Anthem, Rand introduces Equality 7-2521, the protagonist, who leaves his collectivist society to become an individual after they reject him and his ideas. He later changes his name to Prometheus, the man who had brought light to humanity. Prometheus had never had experience with ego since it was forbidden in his society, but he slowly starts to become very selfish as he turns to being an egoist. Prometheus discusses how “The day will come when I shall break all the chains of the earth, and raze the cities of the enslaved, and my home will become the capital of a world where each man will be free to exist for his own sake” (Rand 104). His ego is displayed very clearly in this
“They were not badly off whilst Morel was in the hospital. There were fourteen shillings a week from the pit, then shillings from the sick club, and five shillings from the Disability Fund.” (pg.87)
Kayla- The morning of April 19, 1775 , Britain’s General Gage would send out squadrons of British soldiers stationed in Boston .
In Ayn Rand’s book Anthem, The character Equality 7-2521 also known as Prometheus ran into the uncharted forest after being told that his box of light was a sin to create because he now knew more than his brother’s in the uncharted forest he found out that the golden one had followed him. Then the two uncovered homes from the unmentionable times. In the uncharted forest he discovered the unspeakable word “Ego”. Throughout the book he expressed traits of an Egoist. But in the book because prometheus had been in a dystopian society where they had to think of themselves and their brothers as a whole they were not allowed to think of themselves. So was Prometheus really a egoist? Or was it just his little bit of selfish coming out after not ever being allowed to think about himself?
“I think. I am. I will.” A quote by Ayn Rand that is similar to Rene Descartes quote, “I think therefore I am.” This quote tells society that Prometheus can do anything by himself. He does not need the “we” of society to complete a task. Prometheus can think independently and wants to express himself as one individual. “I will,” illustrates that he will and can do anything. Prometheus believes, just as Rene Descartes does, that if he can think by himself, he is able to live by himself. As he is alone he is thinking by himself, therefore he is alive and able to express himself as he truly is.

The famous philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson once stated that “To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.” The world is full of people who are conformists as well as people who stand for themselves and follow their own values. Emerson explains that by being yourself you are already part of something great. However, the question still lingers: Which is the real cause of genuine happiness? There have been many claims argued by various sources, such as Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World, Ursula Le Guin’s The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas, Shirley Jackson’s The Lottery and Sherry Turkle’s TED Talk titled “Connected, but alone?”. All have come to a consensus
