Today, the United States has less equality of opportunity than any other place. They have exposed the legend that America is a country where opportunities are unlimited. In the dictionary equal society is an independent, non-profit, non-governmental organization which aims at sensitizing and informing citizens for sexual equality, equal opportunities, and non-discrimination in all fields of social life. As for me, equal society is when society, as a whole, is able to put differences aside and be able to work together for a common goal that works to better ourselves as individuals and as a group. Equal society has never been present throughout history, including today. It is shown through the change we have accomplished, common ideas we share, …show more content…
Martin Luther King Jr left a note that was a promise in which all African Americans and Americans would be assured “unalienable Rights” of “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” It is clear that America has declined to follow this promise. The article, I Have a Dream, Martin Luther King Jr stated, “One hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination” (11). Basically, Martin Luther King Jr. is saying that to this day, everything still remains the same. African Americans are still being discriminated and judged for their appearance. Latinos and African Americans still get paid less than whites and Americans are still at a higher level and treated more with respect then Hispanic and African American. Discrimination should not be happening in today’s society, we need to help each other out and support everyone in order to grow. African Americans are still being discriminated till this day for instance police brutality. There is a massive amount of African Americans that have been cruelly beaten or attacked by a police officer. This should not be happening no more, there has got to be a stop to this, Black lives …show more content…
We must all be treated equally and with respect. Martin Luther King Jr. states, “We refuse to believe that there are insufficient funds in the great vaults of opportunity of this nation” (11). I’ve always believed that we don’t all have the same chance to be able to achieve the same goals equally as everyone else, due to the factors that are outside of our control. In order for this world to grow, we need positive people that are willing to make a change, but instead we get irrelevant people like Donald Trump. Donald Trump is against Muslims and Immigrants. He wants Immigrants to go back to their country because, according to him, they are rapist and are taking the jobs of Americans. Donald Trump is a bad person trying to run for president. If he’s president there will be a lot more discrimination and racism. We need people like Martin Luther King that wanted equal rights, not racists people like Donald Trump. If we continue having negative people, then we will never expand. We tend to accept things the way they are for example interracial marriage was not okay before and it was illegal but as time passed it was widely accepted and it was legalized. Now same gender can get married and we see it as normal. If we continue accepting things that should not be permitted like racism and discrimination later on in the future we will find that normal just like everything
Equality can be interpreted in many ways, as we can see throughout the history such as racial, gender, and socio-economic equality. The Civil Rights emphasize that everybody should be treated equally and another view is the one represented in the story that everybody is equal. It is a completely out of reality to have a perfect society or no competition at all because how we could make advancements if the government was allowed to impose handicaps on the naturally gifted. The great thinkers would not be able to have new ideas because of the mental
Often times our society confuses equality for equal. Although the words may look same and share similar letters, the two have completely different definitions. As an African American citizen living in America I feel like we focus much on being equal opposed to having equality. Thus when having equality you are giving equal opportunity and more door become available, despite when being equal you are just like everyone else. However, unlike the novel “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut Jr. I would rather have equality than to be one hundred percent equal to someone else. When making everyone equal you take away ones individuality, creativity, and strengths; eliminating competition and status feuds. Yet in order for them to make everyone equal they must instill fear and diagnoses everyone with false handicaps.
In 1963, African Americans were treated differently from white Americans, because of the color of their skin. As we live in 2017 our society has come a long way from 1963, but we still have Americans being discriminated against every day. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., spent most of life fighting against discrimination and racism. Dr. King “Letter from a Birmingham Jail” and his “I Have a Dream” speech doesn’t hold much value in this day of time, because the LGBT community, the Muslim community, and even myself as African American are all still facing discrimination.
Equality - is fair treatment and access opportunities for all regardless of differences like their ability, culture, race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, or any other group characteristic.
"I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality... I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word." Martin Luther King had once said this before, but he is so tragically wrong people are still affected by racism. The person being racist does not know the harsh realities of it until they actually are exposed to it. However, the majority of victims are Africans, Asians, and Hispanics who are succumbed to it by the stereotypical Americans. Not only are they judged by the color of their skin but, many of their lives are affected in today’s society. Having a larger number of Americans being white, it is widely assumed
There has been a lot of change since the time Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. wrote his famous Letter from a Birmingham Jail compared to the social issues of today’s American society. Back in the 1960s, society was a forced set of rules and social correctness. Unfortunately, this politeness did not apply to any segment of culture except white society. It was a hard battle for African Americans to win equal rights against a society, which acted polite, but was actually racist and suppressant to everyone, who did not fit in to their accepted group. Actually, the Civil Rights Movement demanded the respect and acceptance of every distinctive group in America, which we should be proud of. While the Civil Rights Movement won this battle, now history seems to be
King’s dream today. Even though Dr. King had been assassinated on April 4, 1968, does not mean we do not have a role in living out what he spent countless hours on to get African Americans free. The question people may be asking is, “What am I supposed to do to live out Martin Luther King’s dream?” One of the most important things people should do to live out his dream is treating black people like they would treat anyone else. Even better, treat them as they were a friend. The Bible says, “Treat others the way you want to be treated.” (Luke 6:31) Martin Luther treated everyone the same no matter what race they were. Of course people need to do that and if they did, it would make the world a much preferable place. On the other hand, people could also stop acting like black people are overall worse than them. Black people turn out to be really nice people. They are not intimidating at all. The Constitution says, “We hold these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal.” (James Madison Jr.) That means that everyone is the same. It plain out states that all men are created equal. Americans should live by this and even people in a different country if they know that
I believe that we can achieve equality as a society. Equality is something we should all have, equality is the state of being equal, especially is status, rights and opportunities.
In the united states in american society.Men and women are treated unequal at times i think still thre is a little bit of unfairness. in the way they are being treated.such as them having a jail sentence. The men getting less time and the women getting more time depending on if the judge likes her or not.The system of unequality is in effect.because there are still unfairness in the way every man and woman are being treated.there are some equalitys in the world.men and woman are supposed to be treated equal. That is what people are fighting over people are still fighting for their
As far as American society has progressed we will always have a long way to go with the treatment of others, but it is always important to remember how far society has gone The civil rights were about the treatment of the underrepresented and the people with less privilege than the majority, with this you can tell that those people wanted change and change is what they fought for. The problem with civil rights is that the people who want change are minorities as in “people who have fewer rights, power, population, etc.” that means governments can easily ignore their calls for change because the system is fine. People in power can easily say that minorities have no say in what the majority does, so the Majority stays in power denying equal rights
I agree with all the values listed in the book, but in my opinion the first value listed (equal opportunity) has to be the most important to American life. Having the opportunity to make something of yourself by is often taken for granted. By having that equal opportunity in the U.S, it aids in diversifying society and spreading hope to others throughout the country. In theory, people’s dreams and goals can be limitless.
Americans have strived for equality for hundreds of years, and treat everyone fairly. Slaves have been freed, gay marriage has been legalized, and segregation has been banished. But this idea of equality has still not been achieved or shown in society today.
Over the course of time, the United States of America has been to many the land of equal opportunity and prosperity for all. For many years, a plethora of families made their way to the United States, legally and illegally, for better opportunities in the areas of financial gain, social gain, or educational opportunities. I believe that every parent has one common in goal for all their children and that is to be successful in live, and to have a more productive life than they did.
Lane Kenworthy in Foreign Affairs journal argues that it is hard nowadays make it in America because America has of late stopped being the land of equal opportunity both to its citizens as well as nonresidents or non-citizens. there is now less equality of opportunity in the United States than in most other wealthy democratic nations such as Canada, Finland, Germany and the United Kingdom. As much as both Barrack Obama and Mitt Romney agreed on ensuring that equality prevails in the country, Barrack Obama believed that no matter where you come from or your cultural, racial or social background or gender, you have what it takes to succeed in the country. Ensuring equality of opportunities has not been easy because it has been difficult to access equal job opportunities and quality as well as affordable education institutions that equips one with the required skills needed in the job market (Kenworthy,2012).
What is equality? Is it just a political nomenclature or an ideological concept? Or is about working towards creating a fairer society in which each individual can enjoy his/her rights and freedom without any judgement considering that “[w]e will never have true civilization until we have learned to recognize the rights of others.” Will Rogers (1924, p210).
