The history of the Philippines stretches all the way back as far as 900 AD. Examining the history of the Philippines, it’s clear that martial arts have always been an essential part of the Filipino culture. Many different cultures and migrants influenced the martial arts of the Philippines. Escrima has had a long and savage history, dating back to 1521 when Spanish rule first came to the Philippine Islands. Before colonization by Spain, Escrima was taught as a recreational activity, along with reading, writing, religion and Sanskrit. The Spaniards had a hard time imposing their rule on the inhabitants worshipped wielded their bolos, daggers and sticks. Until they brought in firearms so that they could reinforce orders. Survival was not for the strongest, but the smartest. Men used whatever they could to defend and protect themselves against wild animals and enemies. This could be as simple as throwing an object, such as using a tree branch, or poking with a sharp object. Geographic is another contributor to Filipino martial art. There are over 7,000 total islands, and these are divided into the three major island groups consisting of Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. There are over a hundred different dialects throughout the country. However, the national language spoken is Tagalog (Berry & Specht, para. 11). This means there is a lack of organization to centralize the theme in the Filipino Martial Arts, which revolves around fighting concepts.
Looking at the different styles and systems of Escrima, the techniques used are somewhat different, but the overall concepts of combat and winning remain the same. The Filipino martial arts are not compassionate; it is a vicious and dangerous form of self-defense. There are hundreds of unique styles of the Filipino martial arts throughout the
eLoanDocs is a professional services business serving the mortgage loan industry. The most glaring similarity between these two is that neither of the two sure-fire. In Enrique’s Journey, the path from Central America to the United States is ever changing. The journey’s success, for the most part, is based on luck. In fact, Enrique himself made eight attempts before he was able to reach the United States. According to a Department of Homeland Security 2016 report, a mere 46% of attempts illegally cross at border crossings are successful (Tribune). That is saying that there is a better a better chance of guessing a coin flip than managing to end up on the other side. This success rate even assumes immigrants make it to the final border crossing, whereas accounting for the amount of people stopped, captured, or killed along
Inga Clendinnen has had a fascination for the MesoAmerican area and it's history for over 30 years. According to Mother Teresa, “Loneliness and the feeling of being unwanted is the most terrible poverty”. Now imagine being lonely, unwanted, and poor. That is how Esperanza grew up. She lived in a poor neighborhood and was lonely and felt unwanted. She had to navigate through these difficult emotions and challenges with no help, but was able to grow up and become an amazing young woman.
Catheter related bloodstream infections are not only responsible for prolonged hospital stays and increased hospital costs, it is also responsible for increased mortality of the hospitalized patients. According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2017), an estimate of 30,100 central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI) occur in intensive care units and wards of U.S. acute care facilities each year. CLABSI is a serious hospital-acquired infection that occurs when bacteria enters the bloodstream through central venous catheters. CLABSI is preventable as long as health-care personnel practice aseptic techniques when working with the catheter. A blood culture swabbed from the tip of the catheter is needed to confirm the
When I was in eighth grade and my class was choosing our schedules for our first year of high school, I was told that for the diploma I wanted, I would have to take a foreign language. I chose Spanish, because I thought it would be easy. Little did I know that that decision would change my life forever.
The Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act (EMTALA) was enacted in 1986 as a part of the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA) of 1985. EMTALA was enacted to prevent hospitals with Emergency Departments from refusing to treat or transferring patients with emergency medical conditions (EMC) due to an inability to pay for their services. This act also applies to satellite locations whom advertise titles such as “Immediate Care” or “Urgent Care,” and all other facilities where one-third of their patient intake are walk-ins. Several rules and regulations to this act have been established and it has become a very serious piece of legislation and health
Socrates has been accused of corrupting the youth by Meletus and has been sentenced to death. He has thoroughly justified his own decision to obey the opinions of the majority and serve out the sentence that his own city has deemed appropriate for his crimes. At the beginning of this piece, Socrates has presented a period of questions and answers through dialogue with Crito. Throughout the dialogue Socrates is explaining his reasoning for not evading the government. Crito does not understand the madness of Socrates, and would like nothing more than to help his dear friend escape to freedom. "…I do not think that what you are doing is right, to give up your life when you can save it, and to hasten your fate as your enemies would
La Ventana de Los Cielos is a nonprofit organization where they offer a variety of activities for children and adolescents with special needs. The mission of this facility is to promote and improve the physical and mental functions of those with special needs. This facility has 4 different stations where the children rotate and are able to participate in each station. Every station focuses on a specific function such as cognition, motor skills, sensory and social skills with the goal to enhance each function. Services offered at La Ventana include horse-based activities, zoo-interaction, aqua-experiences, music and arts and crafts. The standard ratio of staff to patients is one on one. Although there are times where there might not be enough volunteers or not enough kids that attend on a particular day, a volunteer may be left without a child or may have to work with 2 kids. I feel that the standards of ratio of one on one is adequate because it allows the staff to give the child full attention and are able to get the most out of that child for that particular day.
Cockfighting (Sabung is the word for cock used by the locals) was, and continues to be, popular in the Philippines. It had started out as a religious ritual that over time evolved into that a national sport that became the life’s blood for many on the Island. It wasn’t unusual to see cages lining an alleyway stocked with clucking little warriors. Funny, one of my first thoughts about seeing the cages was wow that must be what’s for dinner or what the guy on the corner would be cooking up on a Hibachi grill to sell later in the
One of the great architects in time was Andrea Palladio, who was made famous for his magnificent Villas built in Italy in the fifteen hundreds. To do so he drew from the Greek and Roman’s architecture, studying many of their finest works, to create his masterful villas. This process would develop into a style of architecture, which became known as Palladianism. This style has inspired buildings which have dominated the landscape for the last four hundred years. These buildings include: English castles, American public buildings, Swiss railroad stations, Spanish libraries, Tuscan villas and Canadian hotels. Many of these buildings are considered to be the great buildings of the world.

Furthermore, Guttmann suggests that “Poliakoff’s stipulation that the criteria for determining victory in sports must be “different from those that mark success in everyday life”...one can nevertheless assert that the rules...were sufficiently different from the rules of war...to allow us to distinguish the two forms of combat.” Combat sports in the modern world benefit much greater from this definition, considering the rules of modern warfare don’t hold much for hand-to-hand combat nor fencing or other forms thereof. However, a modern equivalent can possibly be found in Poliakoff’s reasoning in the difference between a martial art and a combat sport, where the move from sparring into competition distanced martial arts from their combat-oriented origins.
Sandro Botticelli painted La Primavera between 1477 and 1482 for Lorenzo di Pierfrancesco de’ Medici, a member of the powerful Florentine family. While many Renaissance works depicted scenes of Christianity, this work as well as the others in its group – The Birth of Venus, for example - are focused around tales from classical mythology. Designed to hang in a private room, the painting did not need to be made accessible to large audiences like other works of the time, such as the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel by Michelangelo. An educated family with strong Humanistic ties, the Medici would have had the necessary knowledge to interpret the painting’s subject, while the common people would not have. Now located in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence,
