The Story of an Hour and The Interlopers are irony filled stories used in literature today. The Story of an hour is about an old woman who finally feels the freedom of being independent once her husband passed away. The story The Interlopers is about two men who hated each other and later became friends. These two stories have many similarities and differences. While the two stories are different in many ways they also have many similarities. Both of these stories include irony, foreshadowing, and a darker theme. In The Story of an Hour the narrator explains that the old lady had heart problems, this foreshadows a future problem. The lady is told that her husband was in an accident and had passed away. After the woman mourns her lost she soon enjoys the idea of him being gone. Later in the story it says that her husband was nowhere near the incident and …show more content…
The two men separately wandered into the forest without their men with them. This shows the reader that something bad could possibly happen to them while they are alone, especially since a storm is among them. The two men run into eachother and get trapped underneath collapsing branches. During this time the two men bicker about who is going to be retrieved by their men first. Throughout this time they slowly become friends. (Page 5) “Neighbor,” he said presently, “do as you please if your men come first. It was a fair compact. But as for me, I’ve changed my mind. If my men are the first to come, you shall be the first to be helped, as though you were my guest.” After the men become friends, they see figures running down the hill and thought they were eachother men. However, when the got a full look they were surely mistaken. (Page 7) “Who are they?” asked Georg quickly, straining his eyes to see what the other would gladly not have seen. “Wolves.” The two stories show many similarities with irony and a dark
The Story of an Hour: The audience is keyed into the time period by mention of how popular newsstands are, the lack of cell phones, and the social restrictions within marriages that Mrs. Millard, the main character, describes. When Mrs. Millard’s manic episode begins, she retires to an armchair by an open window, symbolic of her newfound inner-freedom. This creates imagery for the audience and helps to
The story shows how selfishness and greed can lead to peril and consequence. The greedy motives of Ulrich and Georg lead them to be put in harm's way. After realizing there is no escape, Ulrich says, “Neighbor, if you will help me to bury the old quarrel, I—I will ask you to be my friend” (Saki 86). Desperately trying to preserve their lives the main characters look past their selfishness. Each finally seeing the other as equal, they agree to aid each other. However, the common saying “to little, too late” becomes all to present. Just as they believe help has finally come, they are instead greeted by a pack of hungry wolves. This is a problem that would have been avoided if the family feud hadn’t lead them to become enemies hunting for each other on the woodland
In the story of an hour it comes as a surprise to hear that her husband died in a train wreck. In the book The Interlopers it comes as a surprise that both men are willing to make up their differences and realize how stupid their lifelong Coral has been. In The Interlopers the suspense
"The Interlopers" an "The story of an hour" are both very eventful short stories. The characters and setting of both stories have big life changing decisions. There is a lot of differences but there is also a lost of similarities.
In the first story, Mrs. Mallard is within the privacy of her home, unlike “The Interlopers” which takes place in the outdoors. “The Interlopers” had a long standing rivalry and wished ill upon each other, while in “The Story of an Hour”, Mrs. Mallard is sad to hear of her husband’s death, even if later she feels it has set her free. The death at the end of the two stories differs as well. In “The Story of an Hour” Louise dies from sadness that her newfound freedom is now taken away, in contrast to “The Interlopers” where the two men die from man eating
I chose to do my analysis on the short story, “The Story Of An Hour”. The themes I see in this story is the quest for identity/coming of age, romantic/love, birth, and death. It is about a woman named Mrs. Mallard. She was an elderly lady and had a heart complications. Her sister Josephine and her husband’s friend Richards had to break the news to her that her husband, Brently Mallard, has been killed in a railroad disaster. Mrs. Mallard was sorrowful and sobbed in her sisters’ arms. After her grieving process, she wanted to be alone, so she went to her room and locked herself in. As she sat in the window, she seem to be calmer and accepted her husband’s death. She was not distressed of what had happened. She began to say the words “free” and her heart
The Story of an Hour," by Kate Chopin is the tragic story of a woman whose newfound position as a widow gives her strength. She develops a sense of freedom as she embraces her husband's death as an opportunity to establish her own identity. The tragedy is when her newfound identity gets stripped away as the appearance of her husband reveals that he is still alive. The disappointment from this tragedy kills her with a heart attack symbolizing the many conflicts that she faced throughout the story. The conflicts the character faces within herself and society show that the social norms for women were suppressing to their strength and individuality as human beings.
Comparatively, the relationships between the two main characters in the stories portray women’s yearning for freedom with different types of confinement. Psychological and physical confinements are terms that we can see used through out both stories. While “Story of an hour” basis its character being emotionally confined, and her great awakening being the room in which she grasps
"Of Mice and Men" is a book about two men and their struggle to achieve their dream of owning a small ranch through their companionship. The two men are completely different, one being a retarded fellow (Lennie), and the other, a typical ranch hand(George) who travels with him. On the path to achieving their dream, they run into obstacles, but stick together, stressing the importance of true friendship. Steinbeck wrote this book to tell us how important it is to have a friend to share your life with.
"The Story of an Hour" involves one married couple and when the wife, Mrs. Mallard, hears her husband has died in a railroad disaster she breaks down into tears. Moments after sitting in her chair weeping she begins to feel free to do as she wants now that he has passed on. As she approaches the stairs in her home the door opens and her husband stands alive and well. When the doctors arrive they say Mrs. Mallard ."..had died of a heart disease-of joy that kills." In both of these short stories the wives seem to share the foul qualities of selfishness, unfaithfulness and confusion.
In both short stories, the main characters, Mrs. Mallard and the narrator have or ended up developing some sort of illness while in their marriages which can create difficulties in their relationship. In “Story of an Hour”
The Story of an Hour published on December 6, 1894 and The Storm published in 1969. The Story of an Hour is a short story about a woman named Louise Mallard who has a heart condition and is unhappy with her marriage. When she finds out he isn’t dead, she’s so shocked that she dies when she sees him walk through the door. The Storm is a short
The Story of an hour written by Kate Chopin is the best short-story because theme, characters, point of view, and style show the attitude that some women felt or may feel regarding marriage being repressive in their life and a longing for freedom. The story opens with Mrs. Mallard’s sister Josephine informing her that her husband has been killed. Because of Mrs. Mallard’s heart condition Josephine and Richards, who is a friend of the family and there to help deliver the news, are concerned with how the news will affect Mrs. Mallard. When Mrs. Mallard hears the news to is over taken with grief and locks herself in her room. While in her room she imagines herself in her new life that is no longer bogged down by her duties as a wife. When
The Story of an Hour signifies oppression and freedom. The story shows oppression in a marriage in the following quotation. “But she saw beyond that bitter moment a long procession of years to come that would belong to her absolutely.” In this quotation, Louise realizes that she will grieve her husband when she sees him lying in a casket. However, she is no longer bound by her marriage and she is free to do as she pleases. Additionally, freedom is signified when Louise says the following. “She breathed a quick prayer that life might be long. It was only yesterday she had thought with a shudder that life might be long.” Prior to her husband’s death Louise felt trapped in her marriage and wanted her life to be short so she wouldn’t have to
“The Story of an Hour” is a story about a woman, Mrs. Mallard, who comes to find that her beloved husband Brently Mallard was killed in a railroad incident. She mourns of his death in a different way than most would and tries to find a way to get over it. There is a drastic twist to the story when through the front door walks Brently Mallard who had actually not died. Then Mrs. Mallard drops to the floor dead, “of joy that kills”.
