Alzheimer’s disease is a type of dementia that causes problems with memory, thinking, and behavior, along with causing severe language problems. This disease is known as the most common form of dementia, and its account for 50 to 80 percent of dementia cases. According to current estimates, about 10% of adults over the age of 65 and nearly half of adults over age 85 suffer from Alzheimer’s disease (Alzheimer’s Association, 2006). In addition, experts also suggested that as many as 5.1 million Americans may have Alzheimer’s disease.
Alzheimer’s disease is named after Dr. Alois Alzheimer, a German psychiatrist and neurologist. In 1906, Dr. Alzheimer noticed changes in the brain tissue of a woman who had died of an unusual mental illness. Her

Many scientists believe that Alzheimer’s results from a combination of genetic, lifestyle, and environmental factors that affect the brain over time. Because many people are different in their genetic make-up and lifestyle, their chances of developing Alzheimer’s disease are also different. Most people who develop the disease after the age of 60 have “late-onset” Alzheimer’s. Many studies have linked the apolipoprotein E (APOE) gene to late-onset Alzheimer’s. This gene has several forms, and one of them, APOE 4, seems to increase a person’s risk of developing the disease. However, other studies have also shown that carrying the APOE 4 of the gene does not necessarily mean that a person will develop Alzheimer’s disease, and a person not carrying APOE 4 can also develop the disease. Researchers working on genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified eleven new genes that contribute to risk of late-onset Alzheimer’s disease, and this strengthened evidence about the disease of certain biological pathways, including amyloid metabolism and immune
Alzheimer’s disease (AD), a form of degenerative, fatal dementia, is characterized by progressive cognitive decline. While AD is the most common form of dementia, its prevalence has only recently been recognized. When Alois Alzheimer first described the sequence of changes in 1907, physicians believed the disease to be an extremely rare, mid-life condition. It wasn’t until the 1970’s that the same types of changes were shown to occur in both late- and early-onset forms (Cavanaugh et.al. 2008). As such, almost all knowledge of AD has been learned within the past several decades, with new discoveries being reported almost daily. It is now estimated that Alzheimer’s accounts for as many as 60% of all dementias and affects more than 500,000
Alzheimer’s disease in many ways is not yet defined. It is a progressive disease afflicting between 5 and 15 percent of people over 65. Additionally, it is not restricted to the elderly, reportedly having
A brain deteriorates, slowly being engulfed by a mysterious disease. The neurons being cut off and destroyed by two abnormal structures. First memory is affected gradually getting worse. Then one is unable to think properly, reason, and lacks of self control. Gaps are formed in the brain 's ventricles, due to the amount of dead tissue. In the end, it will lead to death. All of this may sound like something from a science fiction movie but infact its very real. These are all known possible symptoms of a common disease that affects about millions of Americans. It is known as Alzheimer 's disease (AD), and I plan on explaining it a bit more in this paper. First I will explain the disease and list some facts about it,then I will talk about some commonly asked questions about it.
Alzheimer’s disease is a brain disease with many different stages that slows one’s lifestyle and has no real cure. Alzheimer’s disease is named after Dr. Alois Alzheimer. The disease first appears around the age of sixty. Studies have concluded that as many as 5.1 million Americans have Alzheimer’s disease. A person with Alzheimer’s loses connections between neurons in the brain (1).
Do you know about the disease called alzheimer's?The reason why you want to care is because someone in your family could have it.”Alzheimer's disease is the 6th leading cause of death in the United States”. Alzheimer's disease Alzheimer's is a disease that makes you forget about important information that you new. Alzheimer's Association is an organization that helps patients with the disease, and not only that, we are able to help them out too!
Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive brain disorder that causes a gradual and irreversible decline of cognitive abilities (Feldman, 2010, p. 325). Informally known as “old timers” disease, it strikes more than half of the elderly community greater than age 85 (Feldman, 2010). In addition to the loss of memory there are also major neurological, functional, and behavioral changes as well. There are a few risk factors including age, family history, and head injuries. There is no definitive way of predicting that a person will get Alzheimer’s, but there are genetic markers and neurological tests that can signify a person’s
The average life span of a person getting Alzheimer’s is between the ages of 45 and 60. Millions of people are plagued by this heartbreaking disease. Although heredity does not play an obvious role, if one’s parents have it, there is a great chance of the disease appearing in the child during their elderly years. The risk for getting the disease increases with age and is seen more commonly in elderly females. There are a number of theories for the actual cause of Alzheimer’s disease, but at this
According to the National Institute on Aging’s recently revised criteria for dementia, impaired language functions, including difficulties in speaking, reading and writing are among the core clinical criteria of Alzheimer’s disease (AD; McKhann et al. 2011). During the early/mild clinical stage of AD, individuals exhibit subtle word finding problems, and difficulty using and understanding complex language forms such as idioms, figurative forms, metaphors and similes, and sarcasm (Bayles 1982, Bayles et al. 1992, Kempler et al. 1988). In the middle/moderate clinical stage of AD, individuals demonstrate pronounced word-finding problems to express feelings/intent or to express unmet needs such as their spoken, written and gestural outputs are
Alzheimer’s Association (2010) explains that Alzheimer’s disease is a brain’s disease which affects the way people think, remember and behave. Finally, people living with Alzheimer’s do not know themselves; do not able to perform everyday activities, which means that they always have to be under control. All of these are caused by improper function of the brain.
Alzheimer's disease is a neurological disorder in which the death of brain cells causes memory loss and cognitive decline, it is a progressive disease that destroys memory and other important mental functions. It is the most common type of dementia, accounting for 60 to 80 percent of cases of dementia in the United States (Clark Etal.,2016). In 2013 6.8 million people in the U.S. had been diagnosed with dementia. Of those 6.8 million, 5 million were diagnosed with Alzheimer's. By 2050, the numbers are expected to double. ( Mckhann Etal.,2011)
Alzheimer’s disease is a common cause of dementia. This disease is a gradual deterioration of memory a personality that’s marked by the formation of plaques of beta-amyloid protein and tangles of fat in the brain. Abnormalities destroy the ability of neurons to communicate with one another. The brain has a plaque that is located in the tissues surrounding neurons. The tangles are twisted mass of threads made of a protein called tau within the neurons. Normal brains contain beta-amyloid and some tau, but brains with AD plaques and tangles causing proliferate in the hippocampus. The hippocampus is a part of the brain’s structure and deals with memory. First forgetfulness and working memory disappear. Plaque is a symptom that people have when they develop Alzheimer’s
Alzheimer's disease (AD, SDAT) or simply called Alzheimer's, which is the most common dementia. In 1906, the first German psychiatrist and neurologist, Alois Alzheimer, pointed out that the disease was incurable, degenerative and fatal. The disease is named after him. In 1901, Alois Alzheimer presented the case of a patient named Auguste D, 50 years old, who has suffered from memory loss. In the twentieth century, the term "Alzheimer's disease" is usually used to diagnose demented people who are around the aged of 45 to 65 (forgetful before getting old). Older people who are suffered from dementia are considered to be normal, due to the high age of "numbness". In the 1970s and 1985s, it has been founding out that losing-memory people of different ages had similar clinical symptoms. This disease usually occurs in people over 65 years of age. However, early Alzheimer's is not uncommon but it can occur sooner than expected. In 2006 there were 26.6 million people with Alzheimer's disease worldwide. Anticipated Alzheimer's rate in the world will be 1 in 85 by 2050.
Alzheimer’s disease was first defined in 1906 by Alois Alzheimer, a German psychiatrist and pathologist. Alzheimer spent many years observing a middle-aged woman whose memory and cognitive abilities were quickly deteriorating. Shortly after her death, Alzheimer studied portions of her brain under a microscope, where he soon unearthed a plethora plaque deposits. He also discovered that the fine inner structure of the nerves in different brain regions were aggravated, forming tangles made up of a protein called tau (1). These discoveries lead to the socially accepted disease that we know today as the Alzheimer’s Epidemic.
Patients and caregivers who are suffering from Alzheimer’s are seeking ways to relieve their burden and improve their quality of life. An intervention which includes community resources such as, community support groups, adult day care, respite care services and nursing homes can be excellent resources to help people with dementia and enhancing caregiver coping skills; with the early diagnosis, the patients and families can gain benefits to these programs (BrightFocus, 2015).
Alzheimer’s disease is a disease that affects many older people in the U.S., according to the latest census. This disease is caused by the death of brain cells. The result is memory loss. This neurological disorder is devastating to watch along the process. According to the Mayo clinic, Alzheimer’s is caused by genetic changes less than 5% of the time.
