With electronic cigarettes becoming popularized and thought of as a “safer” alternative to cigarettes we may see the last generation of traditional cigarette smokers dissipate into thin air. The amount of people using electronic cigarettes is growing rapidly every day, even traditional cigarette smokers are switching to the phenomenon as ways to kick the dirty habit. Which is why we as a society are at the end of the bell curve with traditional cigarette smoking. At the same time, we are at the peak of the bell curve for electronic cigarettes, making nicotine use and dependence on a steady flow for America's youth.
The way all e-cigarettes work is basically the same way. Inside, there's a battery, a heating element, and a cartridge that holds nicotine and other liquids and flavorings. The first ever concept of the electronic cigarette was created by Herbert A. Gilbert in the 1960’s, but it saw little promise in the heavily emerged society of cigarette smoking. It was only a matter of time before

middle (grades 6-8) and high school (grades 9-12) students, CDC and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) analyzed data from the 2011-2014 National Youth Tobacco Surveys (NYTS). In 2014, e-cigarettes were the most commonly used tobacco product among middle (3.9%) and high (13.4%) school students. Between 2011 and 2014, statistically significant increases were observed among these students for current use of both e-cigarettes and hookahs (p<0.05), while decreases were observed for current use of more traditional products, such as cigarettes and cigars, resulting in no change in overall tobacco use. Consequently, 4.6 million middle and high school students continue to be exposed to harmful tobacco product constituents, including nicotine.” (Arrazola
In 2003 the electronic cigarette is first developed in Beijing, China by Hon Lik, a 52 year old pharmacist, inventor and smoker. In 2007 Electronic
The e-cigarette format, however, does not eliminate concerns regarding public and individual health risks. The World Health Organization has called for e-cigarette usage to be monitored in the same way as more conventional tobacco products,(23) the US FDA is advocating for more research,(24) and there has been a dramatic increase in analyses of the chemical, physiological, psychological and socio-cultural aspects of e-cigarettes.(2-7,9-12,14-21,24-52)
There is a new trend hitting the market known as e-cigarettes, or “vaping.” Many people believe that e-cigarettes are better than traditional cigarettes, but research shows just how unhealthy and harmful e-cigarettes are for everyone. The FDA has not yet decided if e-cigarettes should be regulated like tobacco products. E-cigarettes are marketed to help people quit smoking and live a healthier nonsmoking life. E-cigarettes are meant to help break the habit of smoking, but why are there so many “toxic chemicals” (Gilger) in the vapor? Is this new invention to help people quit smoking or just another way for tobacco companies to get richer?
The profitable business of electronic cigarettes has raised over $3 Billion dollars annually, vastly spread across over 466 brands which have joined the ordeal. Above all, known as a “gateway drug”, electronic cigarettes have claimed the once-ordinary lives of people, specifically to those who have turned from tobacco cigarettes. What is more, scientists have determined that not enough research has been executed to automatically assume the healthiness of e-cigarettes. Despite this, many have claimed that e-cigarettes, are, and will be the new “healthy” drug, so to speak. Provided that e-cigarettes do not release harmful smoke, they are still not safe for one’s health given that not enough research has been performed on them.
Although they might be slightly more effective than nicotine patches and other aids in helping people quit smoking, electronic cigarettes still stand as a gateway to nicotine addiction. A recent study from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) suggests more children and teens from middle school to high school are trying these new devices. About 1.8 million children admitted puffing on an e-cigarette with 160,000 of them doing so with never having tried an ordinary cigarette before. These implications mean electronic cigarettes have been getting a lot of attention lately from the community. The CDC indicates this trend as a serious concern.
The percentage of high-school students who said they had used an e-cigarette within the last 30 days jumped to 4.5% in a 2013 CDC survey, up from 2.8% in 2012. The rate among middle-school students was flat at 1.1%. The percentage of high-school students who had ever tried e-cigs for the first time rose to nearly 12% from 10%. Among middle-school students it rose to 3% from 2.7%. E-cigarettes look high tech, so it's easy to believe the hype that they're a safe alternative to smoking (E-cigarette use triples among middle and high school students in just one year). Unfortunately, they're not: E-cigarettes are just another way of putting nicotine — a highly addictive drug — into your body.
It is undeniable that the popularity and usage of electronic cigarettes or personal vaporizer devices have been on the rise since they first gained the public’s attention in the early twenty first century. In fact, one study by UBS Securities LLC shows that the value of the e-cigarette market has doubled or more each year since 2007 and was expected to double from two hundred and fifty million dollars in 2011 to five hundred million in 2012(7). Some of the growing concerns is that, like the tobacco market when it first started growing in popularity, there has been little research conducted on the long term effects of electronic cigarettes. Other causes for concern stem from the marketing and sale of these devices to teenagers. This is why the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) needs to impose restrictions and regulations on the use and sale of these devices and conduct further research on the health related effects and long term effects of their usage.
E-cigarettes are useful because they provide pure nicotine, while cutting out the harmful carcinogens and other addictive substances that are added into regular cigarettes. The liquid nicotine pods are electronically heated when using the e-cigarette. Thus, the result is a could of smoke, similar to that of a regular cigarette. Part of the craze that follows the e-cigarette is because it so closely resembles a true cigarette. A person’s brain perceives the same smoke and “throat hit,” the sensation felt in the back of the throat when one smokes a cigarette, that one would receive from a regular cigarette. For many users, this is essential part of the smoking experience. The ability to replicate this experience with an e-cigarette is extremely helpful to people trying to quit smoking.
One of the most controversial debated issue involving e-cigarettes is whether its status is that of a smoking reliever device or a tobacco product. Anyone can get a an e-cigarette online because there has been little government intervention involving the purchases taken place online. Under the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act, the FDA was granted authority to regulate any product that has or derives from tobacco. Since August 2016, the American Lung Association called for the FDA to bring e-cigarettes and other related and unregulated tobacco products under its authority. Given the exponential rise in youth using e-cigarettes in the US, this was especially important during the time, according to the American Lung Association, as it included a 900 percent increase amongst high school students from 2011 to 2015. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), teens who uses smokeless tobacco products are more likely to smoke cigarettes than nonusers. Due to the easy accessibility of e-cigarettes, they are seen as a novelty product rather than a solution to combat smoking addiction amongst many vaping
Electronic cigarettes have been marketed in recent years as alternatives to smoking. They are electrically-driven devices, used to vaporise a liquid that may or may not contain nicotine. They consist of a battery part-usually lithium battery, and an atomizer where liquid is stored and is aerosolized by heating a resistance encircling a wick. The main ingredients of liquids are propylene glycol, glycerol and a variety of flavourings. A huge variety of devices and different liquids are available, with the main purpose to satisfy users’ need and preference.

One thing that has commonly been agreed upon is that Americans are smoking less cigarettes now, due to vaporizer. About 23% of smokers have tired electronic nicotine device systems and 62% of participants from one study reported using them for no loner than six months (Tackett et al. 868, 870). According to Alayna Tackett et al. research, who are affiliated with the Department of Psychology and Oklahoma State University found, “Exhaled CO readings confirmed that 66% of the tested sample had quit smoking. Among those who continued to smoke, mean cigarettes per day decreased from 22.1 to 7.5” (868). This is pretty remarkable considering the fact the about half a million people die from cigarettes every year, in the United States alone. Participants reported that they viewed e-cigarettes to be, “significantly less harmful than all other tobacco products, all
An estimated 36.5 million or 15.1 % of adults aged 18 years old and older currently smoke cigarettes and more than 16,000,000 have smoking or live with diseases that are related to smoking. According to US department of health and human services, over the past five decades, there is a significant decline in cigarette smoking in the U.S. The progress has slowed in recent years and the prevalence of use of other tobacco products such as vapes, e-cigars and smokeless tobacco
E-cigarettes have heating elements that are battery operated and hold cartridges of nicotine and other liquids and flavoring. They were produced to assist those who are trying to quit smoking or reduce the amount of nicotine that is actually inhaled in the body to make it a safer product for the consumer than actually smoking a cigarette. There is controversy on whether or not this product promotes a safer nicotine habit or stimulates someone to begin smoking habits. Most importantly, those who do not smoke at all are concerned whether or not the secondhand smoke emitted from these devices is harmful for those who do not wish to inhale nicotine products. There are states laws that
Cigarette smoking is something people all over the world have been doing for about 2000 years. Back in 2003, the first electronic cigarette was successfully created by a gentleman named Hon Lik. Lik was a 52 year old pharmacist at the time, whom of which was also a smoker. The inspiration behind making the electronic cigarette came after Lik’s father passed away from lung cancer due to him also being a heavy smoker. “A Historical Timeline of Electronic Cigarettes.” cassia.org. Consumer Advocates for Smoke Free Alternatives Association, 15 June 2017. The idea behind creating this device was to give smokers a way to still ingest nicotine, the most addictive chemical in tobacco cigarettes, without the countless negative health effects that
