Reflective Statement Stock and flat characters are essential in writing novels. They either help the main character or they harm them in some way. In terms of Waiting for Godot, most of the characters all tie in with each other in good and bad ways. One character that had a big influence on the book was Didi. However, since he is a main character, he does not influence the flat characters, they affect him. For example, Didi and his constant wanting to commit suicide. Didi brought out the “bad” side of Gogo by having him retaliate in a harsh physical way. Due to this, Didi fights Gogo because of the anger that overtook him. This changed the reader’s outlook on Didi as a whole. We did know about how he loved adventure, and even left to join a bandit gang. This was a protagonist to why Didi did what she did. Putting the book in chronological order helps understand the story itself and the originations of particular characters. In terms of Waiting for Godot, most of the characters all tie in with each other in good and bad ways. Whenever someone tells a story, nothing is in order. People usually only remember the main events that happened, but throughout their telling they remember other parts and insert them by going back in time. Also, since Yan had to reach a quota and have a specific amount of words fulfill, as he is telling the story, he adds on parts after they occurred. This technique also helps begin and end the mini stories that are being told in the book. As a story begins, about midway a new one is started. About mid way of the second story, he goes back and finishes of the first one giving the reader more and more context that helps us understand what is being told.
