Why are Native Americans hurt by mascots/team names within the sports industry? Is it because the sports industry took action of creating mascots and Native American names without their approval? Any reasonable person watching would consider this to be critically stereotypical. The media tends to publicly assimilate people with the foul images that portray mascots on television, yet not everyone seems to acknowledge it. Not all, but the majority of Native Americans are offended by the mascots and team names. Two-Hawks states that just because some Native Americans are not offended by the mascots and team names, it does not mean they are racist. Even though not everyone may view it in a negative light, it is understandable some people consider it to be racist. In Baseball there are multiple teams that utilize disrespectful names such as “Savages”, “RedSkins”, and “Indians” to represent themselves. The sports industry states that the reason behind the sports team names is to honor the native culture, it is arguable that the reasons behind their actions are not the purest. Are they really honoring the native culture, or do they just really enjoy the name? Of course some people within the sports industry may be ashamed while others do not even care. It is a total disrespect to native Americans. Supporters for these teams act as if they do not realize how cruel it is; by painting their faces, dress into Indian clothing and continue to deliberately mock them by the doltish lyrics of their team fight song which specifically says the foul/racist lyrics “Scalp’em, Swamp’em we will Take’em big score Read’em, Weep’em, tochdown! We want heap more!” As if they are truly honoring the native culture. What they are truly doing is making a laughing matter out of the Native American culture and because of this, the majority of Native Americans do not receive the respect they
