Every student in the school’s One Act play program last year ended up asking themselves the same question, and that question, put simply, is “What happened?” Previously under the tutelage of Mr. Johnston, the more seasoned actors and actresses were not used to the new director, Mrs. Smith. It seemed that the shows were ending on a somewhat lacking note, and everyone wanted to know why. Many chalked it up to the choices in script, which is a perfectly reasonable assumption, but I figured that there was at least one other factor. My speculation summed up to a budget consisting of pocket lint and good intentions.

This answers the question of why One Act seems to be so low-budget, but it does nothing for the pondering of the budget itself. For this question to be attended to, I needed to dig deeper. I requested an audience with Mr. Knippelmeyer, and he proved to be most helpful with filling in the gaps. He relayed to me the information that One Act had almost $500 to its name last year, and that, “Most of the money for One Act this year is going to a new set.” This is contiguous with something Mrs. Hogue mentioned before, “This year, [the One Act budget] is mostly going to go toward flats for the set, which we can reuse, so next year the money will be focused… on something different, most likely wireless microphones.”
Mr. Knippelmeyer also explained that the extracurriculars with classes directly related to them (i.e. Speech, Science Club, Spanish Club, etc.) tend to get more support, if only because they themselves educationally support the class with which they are intertwined. In addition, a club whose administration feels isn’t getting enough attention may appeal to the Booster Club for assistance, and the thirty-five dollar sum the students are required to pay at the beginning of the year goes toward funding all of the school organizations sponsored by the NSAA. There are many economic reasons, such as a new baby in the household, job loss or change, the children’s education expenses or retirement. All of these occurrences can cause financial burdens and, the need to control and tightened spending. Even the wealthy, have to budget and arrange their unrestricted expenses against their limited incomes. It is possible to live well on a tight budget but there has to be an understanding of the expenses, a good attitude and a clever plan.

Growing up as a Kansas City, MO resident, I attended schools in the Kansas City school district. I attended J.S Chick African Centered school in elementary and I could always remember having two teachers to even out the student teacher ratio, so therefore we all were able to get individualized attention. Nowadays elementary school students aren't able to have this benefit. With all of the school shutdowns in the Kansas City, MO school district our children are being effected tremendously.
