Photo Authenticity – the true essence of photography remains realism even as artistry and creativity continues to stake its claim. The desire to capture inspiring, authentic images has never been lost. This is all thanks to the people’s sense of belonging and need to associate with the familiar. One way to prove authenticity through photo shoot is to capture images or portraits that depict emotions or bring out stories. It is unlikely that the desire to bring out authenticity will not be fazed by a few alterations and retouching using software photo editors, filters and cameras to bring out the very best in photography. With photo authenticity gaining root, real people will be cast in the same manner as models and artists. For example, authenticity in portrait photography will remain firmly entrenched in the skin, body and emotions.
Black and White photography – seems like the allure of black and white photography is never going to end any times soon as the art is quickly turning into mainstream photography hitherto artistic shoots. There is a growing list of people
Another significant reason that has played a vital role in photojournalism of recent times is the emergence of imaging technologies. Imaging technologies has undoubtedly played a major part in the works of a photojournalist today. Based on earlier accounts on how photography itself is an inherent manipulation, the question is no longer directed on how has imaging technologies manipulate photojournalism' but how much more has imaging
For everyday pictures, you can mix things up by telling a story with your photography. Instead of snapping pictures as they happen with no influence on the shots, this style of photography involves planning and executing your vision. The storytelling is completely up to you.
A reoccurring topic of the essays, concerning photography, discussed during the course is the future of professional photographers/photojournalists. Some believe that the easily accessible spread of amateur photography can and has put a strain on the works of professionals. However, with magazines such as National Geographic still in print after over a century, it raises some questions. Though the spread of information, and thus photography, has increased the platforms and need for professional photographers and photojournalists still exists.
Between the use of film or digital photography, film is the more effective method when looking for originality and creativity. With the adoption of digital photography, the younger generations, as well as the older and more current photographers are becoming lazy. These groups must recognize that the art of the photograph is being jeopardized by the digital camera and the camera phone. For the current photographers as well as amateur photographers, this essay will serve as testimony to film as well as other chemical methods, and how they shouldn’t be ignored, but preferred. The digital era has had a massive impact on the art world and all of its mediums, but for photography this impact has resulted in the removal of the human from the photograph making process. This intimate process is what makes it an art form. All of films imperfections and unique qualities, as well as its monetary value and scarcity are just a few factors that have made it so precious. To replace this entire process with a microchip is offensive and undermines the importance of the process that is needed to make a photograph. Anyone can take a picture but you must make a photograph, and this skill is being simplified to a digital camera. The impact of the digital era on photography has hindered the process of making a photograph; painting the art form obsolete in today’s society.
I always had an eye out for photography, photography is a getaway for me, let alone along with many others. Photography for me, I think, is a powerful thing to have. Photos tells stories, the value it has too people, it also creates memories and has a way of seeking emotions in specific pictures. I always was a freak for photography, everywhere I go I have to take pictures! Photography gives that way of looking at everything in different perceptions, and it helps me in daily life because if I need ideas on what to do with sculpture, a photo or even things that need to be put in different ways I always have a way of seeing those things that most people don’t.
As I was scrolling down my pictures on VSCOcam, an editing app that has been my favorite for a few years not, it struck me yet again that one of my themes for this year was authenticity.
A world without photography seems merely impossible to the modern age humans. Photography is seen throughout our everyday lives, from the television, to smartphones, and on our computers, it seems impossible to avoid it. But why would we want to? Photography is a vision, a memory, a moment captured in time that makes it possible for humans to share these moments with others. But more than times than not, these moments, visions, photographs are altered, manipulated, and distorted to influence, and change the audience’s view. By analyzing the many methods the photographer’s ways of manipulating, altering, and the distortion of the truth of their works, one can conclude that not everything shown is accurate and often overlooked by the
He also indicates that post photo shoot manipulation started a century ago in the darkroom, but new technology in the profession of photojournalism brought positive and negative outcomes. For example, the new technology has the ability for faster and easier photo manipulation. He recommends the need for further study and the need for an improvement in photojournalist practice to
We relish the fact that our images are a sight for sore eyes, each chosen because we know that someone in the digital world WILL make use of it to elevate and boost their own purpose to a whole new level. Quality content combined with extremely attractive images has an effect on the reader like no other; it helps one to better understand
Although Sturken and Cartwright claim it is quite easy to fall for the misconception that photographs are “unmediated copies of the real world” (Sturken & Cartwright, 17), this is no longer true, if it ever was. While cumbersome, even before the advent of image editing software, it was possible to modify photographs. Furthermore, in contemporary society, we have completely lost faith in mass media representation; rarely do people expect images to be completely unmodified anymore. This is especially visible in western culture since people are pressured to conform into highly specific aesthetics where even a “natural” look is artificially crafted with makeup and digital filters. Even disregarding direct manipulation to a print through methods such as Photoshop, photographs are manipulated in such obvious ways, it almost seems absurd to point it out. The framing, lighting, and positioning are always adjusted by the photographer. Therefore, people themselves are a type of manipulation; a representative filter through which biases are imbued. In effect, Sturken and Cartwright’s conclusion that all camera-generated images bear an “aura of machine objectivity” (Sturken & Cartwright, 16) stemming from “the … legacy of still-photography” (Sturken & Cartwright, 17) is
Since its inception, photography has been used to capture moments in time all around the world. This wonderful technology has existed since ancient times, and has only improved in recent history, changing society in the process.
Photography is a very interesting career choice. It can take people to places they only ever dreamt of going. Although it is a lot of fun, it is also a lot of work. There is many different types of equipment, lighting, cameras, and photographers. You must learn about it all in order to choose the perfect type of photography you want to do. Photography, is not just about capturing photos of objects, it is about how photographers see the world. Being a photographer, there are many responsibilities you must have. For starters, photographers have to be able to market and/or advertis. This will help them to attract customers or clients. On top of being able to market and advertise, they must also be able to analyze and plan compositions of
When going for a walk, a person takes in the beauty around them. On this particular day, the refulgent sun is extra bright, making the sky a perfect blue. White, puffy clouds fill the sky, slowing moving at their own pace. The wind is peacefully calm, making the trees stand tall and proud. There is no humidity in the air. As this person walks down the road, they see a deer with her two fawns. The moment is absolutely beautiful. Moments like this happen only once in a great while, making us wanting to stay in the particular moment forever. Unfortunately, time moves on, but only if there were some way to capture the day’s magnificence. Thanks to Joseph Niépce, we can now capture these moments and others that take our breath away. The
What is a photograph? The simplicity of taking a photograph leads many to ponder its artistic value. Yet, it is undeniable that there are some photos that cause an emotional reaction deeper than simply observing a recorded point in time. Surely, there are photographs that cause more reaction than some modern art pieces. There seems to be two types of photographs. The first classification is the ‘time capture’ photo – an image with the sole purpose of recording a particular event or point in time. The second nature of a photo carries a ‘deeper meaning,’ which has the ability to change the observer’s mood and cause a reaction. But what distinguishes these two varieties? There are a
Until recently, at least, it was possible to define photography as a process involving optics, light sensitive material and the chemical processing of this material to produce prints or slides. Today though, that definition is subject to change. Technological innovations…are shifting photography from its original chemical basis towards electronics… It is not overstating it to say that the advent of this new technology is changing the very nature of photography, as we have known it. (Bode and Wombell 1991)
