The report you are putting together is simpler than it seems. When you turn in the pre-lab, you are turning in the beginning of your report. The pre-lab gets turned in again with your final report. You will have updated the procedure used in the experiment along with any of the other sections. The pre-lab will serve as the front few pages of your final report. Please remember to turn these in!
The Discussion section.
This section needs to be typed to provide uniformity of length. No exceptions. The 2-page, double spaced format works best for me when grading. Your writing skills matter. A discussion can be presented with an introduction, body of discussion and a conclusion. Paragraphs must be used for separate thoughts. Reading one long continuous paragraph that is full of separate thoughts/topics is tedious.
When you discuss the experiment, include the data – the actual numbers, and maybe even how you got them. Use these numbers to help explain your discussion topics. Our reports don’t call for a separate data table (Yay! for those who put one in). If there is something “not right” with your data, discuss why you believe this to be true. “I think we made a mistake.” isn’t an explanation. Use supporting statements for conclusions that you draw. If you use other data, be sure it is correct; include a reference. I will verify whatever I question.
Include observations where applicable. Discuss these. Why were they relevant? Why did the observation occur? Many of you commented on the rainbow effect of the layering but not many fully explained how this was a direct result of the different densities of the
