A resume a short, simple document that highlights an individual's experience, qualifications, skills education and certifications in hopes of finding a job and is usually limited to one, maybe two pages. (WiseGEEK, n.d.) Some employers ask for a resume, other employers ask for what is called a Curriculum Vitae, often shorted to CV. Some employers use the term interchangeably. The CV includes all life accomplishments, in chronological order regardless of the relevance to the job duties. In the academic community, a CVs is the most common and can ran several pages long and is often requested for graduate and professional schools like PHD programs. (Simpson, n.d.) A well written resume contains contact information about the …show more content…
A functional resume is a better fit for someone who is entering the work force after a long period of absence relating health or personal reasons, may have had a long string of temp jobs that lasted only a few weeks or a couple months. This type can highlight jobs that are relevant to what the hiring managers are looking for while leaving the date off and focuses more on education, skills and past job duties. Taking the time to choose the best format is worth it. Choose the right font and size. Times New Roman 12 has been the long standing standard. Keep italics, underlining, bold, and the use of bullets to a minimum and stay consistent with the style you choose. First of all, before applying for any job, get a basic resume put together. I recommend a chronological resume to use a template. On some note book paper, write down a basic objective-what kind of position are you looking for? Are you trying to switch industries? Are you looking for a lateral move or trying to go for a job with more responsibilities? Those are important questions to ask yourself as you write an objective. From there, under the heading of employment list all the jobs you've had over the last 10-15 years. Job title, basic job duties and approximate dates. If you don't remember your hire date or the day you
For the structure of the resume, I kept it simple with a summary, skills, and work history section, then broke the skills and work history sections into 2 smaller sections. In

Everyone has a generic resume, one for all the jobs that they apply for. It’s not the right way to attract the attention of the person who will hire you. Your past experiences will not matter if you don’t back them up and state how what you learned in your previous role will make you ready for this new role you are pursuing. For an ECE job, spill outer strategies in a classroom and what age group you are an expert in. For a nannying job, explain how you have great skills within the home environment and nurturing children. For PSWs, make sure that you state how you can make a seniors life easier with the skills you possess. We all matter, we all have skills but if you don’t highlight them…no-one will notice. Make sure that when you are applying for new jobs you tailor your resume to be effective and highlight
When I started this assignment, I listed everything as I thought it should be. But trouble to arise was when I read the resume back to myself. One challenge I faced was to word things in an order, so they are short and concise, yet descriptive enough to understand. Every time I thought I was being descriptive, it tends out to be either too long or too confusing for anyone but myself to understand. there’s a continuous process of editing, re-editing, and editing some more. There
Three or more pages are often overlooked as employers often have many resumes to look through; however, an executive or professional with senior-level management experience may require three or more pages on his or her resume. Individuals with less than 5 years of work history or very limited work experience may not want to exceed one page as it may portray an attempt to look more accomplished.
Past work experience is the most tried, true and common approach. Unfortunately, this is to some extent directed by the company you work for and because of this may not offer the positive pointed credibility you would like to have.
A high school portfolio is a folder that is filled with you achievements throughout high school starting with freshman year. A high school portfolio should contain an autobiography, projects and their descriptions, a resume, and an essay about your future plans throughout high school and beyond. My thoughts, on creating a portfolio, are that it it very useful. The fact that creating a portfolio in freshman year, makes us think about the future and how we need to start thinking about it sooner rather than later. Creating a portfolio with everything that we've included, helps us narrow our thoughts on our future career and what we want to do instead of not caring freshman, sophomore, and junior year.
Thank you for your post and kind words. I greatly appreciate it. From my experiences, I truly believe that In a nutshell an individual’s resume is a short snapshot of who they are and why he or she is the best choice for the job. In today’s job market, no matter what the job or industry who are trying to enter, it is key that your resume catches a potential opportunity’s/employer’s eye and tells the story they want to hear. I not saying fabricate your abilities, but present the in a clear direct manner that makes the potential employer say, “Wow, I (we) need to meet this person.” However, be sure that you can back your resume. Do not make your snapshot one of fiction.
Every resume needs good content and a good design. Draw recruiters in with the design, then WOW them with your skills and experience. But you need both to make a good resume, not just one or the other.
1. I've never had a job before. What should I write in my work experience section?
Chronological resumes are the education and jobs of a person listed in chronological order. A functional resume is the job skills a person has and highlights them rather than chronologically (Cardon, 2013, pg. 477). Some drawbacks of chronological resumes are key job skills are harder to locate since everything is listed in chronological order. If the person has various jobs in the past, it can be a struggle to keep track as to why the person left each place of employment. Some drawbacks of functional resumes are it doesn't show a person's work experience and some employers are not familiar with the format of it as it is hard to locate previous employers (Sinacole, 2013).

If you find a job you are interested in, look over the job requirements in the ad. Review the requirements and see how your education and experience stack up with what they are looking for.
